What was the core question/thesis of this article? If something is being tested, what was it? Does the research answer the authors question and if so, how, and if not, why not? How is this article related to sociology?

 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Annotated Bibliography assignment: (150points) The paper for this course will be a completion of an annotated bibliography assignment. You should use ASA (American Sociological Association) formatting for this assignment or APA or MLA, and use the structure/format in the example provided.

What you need to do:

1. Decide on a topic that relates to sociology for your paper. The topics “gender” or “race” are too broad. Something more like “gender discrimination in the workplace” or “racial health disparities and microaggressions” is fine.

2. Find 3 peerreviewed journal articles on your topic from the below journal list (instructions also attached). These articles are to be linked thematically (so, you should not use one article on gender equality in the workplace and then the other two on racial discrimination in the military these are not linked thematically).

3. Use the UIUC library website, go to SocINDEX database.

4. Find three peer reviewed scholarly articles on your topic.

5. You will address the following elements for each article (1.5 pages singlespaced for each article):
1) Provide a concise summary of the central theme and scope of the article.
2) What was the core question/thesis of this article? If something is being tested, what was it?
3) What data were used (if any)? Where did they come from? (if no data were used simply state that in your
annotation).
4) Does the research answer the authors question and if so, how, and if not, why not?
5) How is this article related to sociology? (note: bring in concepts/topics discussed throughout course; this section is
weighted more heavily (this is a sociology class!) J)
6) Provide a discussion of how this research improved your understanding of sociology/your main takeaways.
6. You will need to format your annotated bibliography exactly like the example attached at the end of this document.
7. Note: antiplagiarism software will be run on all assignments. In the event that two students in the course review the same
article and copy each other’s bibliographies, both students will receive the grade of 0 (zero) on the assignment.

Why might it be important for a researcher to predict the findings and show the variables’ expected relationship in this manner? What purpose does the hypothesis serve?

Literature Review II / Developing the Research Hypothesis

Discussion: The Research Hypothesis

The research hypothesis typically states the anticipated relationship between variables in a quantitative study. Oftentimes, these variables are labeled as dependent and independent, with the independent variable meaning the intervention, treatment, or other change that is introduced. The researcher then wishes to measure the impact of that change on the dependent variable.

Why might it be important for a researcher to predict the findings and show the variables’ expected relationship in this manner? What purpose does the hypothesis serve? In this Discussion, you answer these questions and generate a hypothesis for your own proposed study.

Identify and describe a social problem that relates to policy in the area you chose. Describe in one paragraph the problem itself. Next, describe in one paragraph the reasons that social workers might want to address policy related to this problem. Can you please do voting?

Midterm Exam Questions

Each of the four questions can be answered on their own, it does not have to be one long essay. Question and answer form but sophisticated

1.Identify and describe a social problem that relates to policy in the area you chose (either voting or social work licensure). Describe in one paragraph the problem itself. Next, describe in one paragraph the reasons that social workers might want to address policy related to this problem. Can you please do voting?

2.Using the Code of Ethics as a resource, think about the ways that policy advocacy to address the identified problem connects to social work values and ethics. Choose at least one of the six ethical principles to discuss, as well as at least two ethical standards. For each, describe the ways in which advocacy related to this problem can help to move us closer to practice within the ethical principle or standards chosen. Provide at least 2-3 sentences on each (a total of 6-9 sentences in this answer overall).

3.Identify and describe at least two existing policies that relate to this social problem. You may choose to use Social Work Speaks, your textbook, or other resources. For each policy, describe the name of the policy, the level of government, and the geographic location of the policy. Next, in a few sentences, describe how the policy connects to the social problem. You will write 1-2 paragraphs for each of the two policies.

4.Finally, choose one point in the policy process where you think a social worker might be able to intervene to address this problem. This may connect to one of the policies you described above, or it may be a different part of the policy process. Describe why you think this point in the policy process is one that lends itself to social work intervention for this issue and what you think the social worker might do. Your answer to this question should be 1-2 paragraphs.

Identify an area or areas of your life where you will use information learned from this course.

Prompt: Identify an area or areas of your life where you will use information learned from this course.

How might learning about different perspectives and biases influence your work, relationships, and other areas of your life?

Which of these alternatives are legal? Which are ethical?

NOTE ALL THREE QUESTIONS NEEDS A RESPONSE: Assume you have a job interview next Tuesday. You have been informed that the interview process will take almost all day. This creates a scheduling conflict. You work next Tuesday at your current job with Zoom meetings all day. How do you proceed with your current employer?

1. Should you tell the truth? If so, would your current job be in jeopardy? Would your employer think you are disloyal and, as a result, not consider you in the future for a raise or promotion?

2. Should you lie? For example, should you tell your current employer that you need the day off because you have to go to the doctor. You know that statement, if not true, brings a lineage of questions, mostly COVID related, if you happen to work in-office.

3. Should you just wait until Tuesday morning and “claim sick time”? Which of these alternatives are legal? Which are ethical? Are you influenced most by the formalist approach (basically mandates that a person should act in a manner that he or she believes that everyone should act) or the consequentialist approach (focuses on the consequences of the action rather than the action itself) to ethical decision-making?
