Why are populists appeals and populist language or discourse used by both Democrats and Republicans?

This week we read and discuss the rise of populism and populist nationalism as a global phenomenon. The key reading is Rogers Brubaker’s article “Why Populism?” In the article Brubaker notes that populism is not an ideology, but “a discursive and stylistic repertoire (p.360) …[an] evolving set of relatively standardized elements (p.360)…built around a core element: the claim to speak and to act in the name of “the people… and against “the elite.” (p.361). Brubaker also notes that, politically, populism has its right-wing and its left-wing variants – and that both sides use the language or discourse of populism as part of their political strategies. In the recent US election, and for the past several years, there has been a rise in the language and appeals to populism from both Democrats (such as Bernie Sanders and President-Elect Joe Biden) as well as Republicans (Donald Trump, Fox News, etc).

For your 250-500 word writing response, please identify as least 2 key types or elements of the populist “repertoire” discussed by Brubaker and as then share examples of each type or element of this populist appeal from the recent US elections – for example from a speech by President-elect Biden, or campaign material from candidate Bernie Sanders, or from campaign speeches or ads from the Republican party. Reflecting on the success of these appeals, why would you say the recent rise in populist rhetoric has taken hold? Why are populists appeals and populist language or discourfktse used by both Democrats and Republicans?

Would you say that today, residents in the United States have a “strong shared ethnic, linguistic, religious, and/or collective identity”?fkt why or why not?

n lecture 12, Prof. McKay, defines “nationalism” as “existence of symbols and beliefs which create patterns of strong shared ethnic, linguistic, religious, and/or collective identity.” Nations and nationalism were also discussed by Marks last week in Ch 5: The Gap (pp.148-150). For your response draw on lecture and/or Marks to discuss at least 2 elements of nationalism you see evident in the presidential election in the United States in 2020. These may be the way one or both major political parties try to create a sense of or appeal to American “nationalism” through symbols or beliefs in their appeals, advertisements or speeches. Would you say that today, residents in the United States have a “strong shared ethnic, linguistic, religious, and/or collective identity”?fkt why or why not?

Explain what level of measurement you will use to gather data about your dependent variable and why (advantages of using that level of measurement for your purposes).

A large, national youth development organization funds local community-based agencies to follow its program model. The adolescents selected for the program must be identified as “high risk,” meaning that they live in an impoverished community, have a single parent, have low grades, have a parent who is or has been incarcerated, and/or are medically fragile.

Big Organization reports the following:

Big Organization is an overwhelming success! Of the youth, 10-17 years old, who participate in our program:
 14% see an increase in their grades,
 43% have better relationships with their peers, and
 31% have better relationships with their parents. The way that Big Organization comes to this data follows. Big Organization gives the local community-based agencies a form to report on their participants. The social worker at the local agency completes the form. Every six months, for each participant, the social worker reports:

Participant’s grades have:
□ improved a lot □ improved somewhat □ stayed the same □ no data

Participants’ relationships with her/his peers have:
□ improved a lot □ improved somewhat □ stayed the same □ no data

Participants’ relationship(s) with her/his parent(s) have:
□ improved a lot □ improved somewhat □ stayed the same □ no dataPart 1 (4 points)
Identify and explain the problems with Big Organization’s conclusions.

Part 2 (9 points)
You decide that Big Organization’s study is too flawed for you to use, so you design your own study.
Your plan is to test the following research question:

Does participation in a Big Organization affiliated program affect the grades of participants?

Write a corresponding null hypothesis associated with this research question.Write a directional alternative hypothesis associated with this research question.Operationalize the independent variable.

Explain how you will gather data for your independent variable (data collection method) and why you will gather it that way (advantages of that data collection method for your purposes).

Explain what level of measurement you will use to gather data about your independent variable and why (advantages of using that level of measurement for your purposes).

Identify at least a couple of possible solutions to this problem and your reasons as to why these would be possible solutions.

Submit your Final PP Presentation.

This project will give you the opportunity to learn more about a current social problem and to teach your classmates more about this social issue as well as possible solutions.

You will choose a social problem from a chapter in your textbook.
Present your chosen social problem in a PowerPoint presentation.
You will need to present 2 slides that represent the social problem that you have chosen. These slides should show clearly why the topic you have chosen is a social problem.
You can add videos clips from television shows or news shows, add magazine pictures or photographs from social media to your PowerPoint presentation. Please feel free to be creative.
Your goal is to teach your classmates about the current social problem that you have chosen in more detail. Additionally, your presentation needs to identify at least a couple of possible solutions to this problem and your reasons as to why these would be possible solutions.
