Specify some of your own cultural expectations that go along with two of the universal identity categories discussed in this module that you inhabit

Wk 3 Assignment 1
Text Book Used:
Pressfield, S. (2011). Warrior Ethos. Black Irish Entertainment LLC.
Identity And Cultural Expectations
Identity vs. Personality
This module explored the categories of identity, as contrasted with personality. These socially elaborated categories, such as the essentially universal notions of age, Cultural Expectations, race, ethnicity and nationality, are relevant in our daily interactions. While we often accept the expectations for behavior that go along with these categories as “natural”, the reality is that these naturalistic explanations obscure the social dimensions of these identities.
When dealing with people from different cultural backgrounds, you might find yourself confronting very different expectations relating to your own identity. It can be useful to understand your own taken-for-granted expectations about your identities, so that you can recognize when your expectations contrast with those of people around you.
Write three paragraphs addressing the following questions. Each response should be a complete paragraph.
1. Specify some of your own cultural expectations that go along with two of the universal identity categories discussed in this module that you inhabit (e.g., your gender and age).
2. Explain an instance in your life in which your behavior or someone else’s did not conform to social expectations regarding one of the identity categories you selected above. How did others respond to this “abnormal” behavior?
3. Discuss a situation from your own life involving role conflict related to one or more of the significant identity categories introduced in this module.
o • Which identity category seemed more important to you in resolving the role conflict?
o • Did this have something to do with the other people involved in the situation, or was it driven more
by your own interpretation of what was most important at that time?
o • Did the resolution seem wholly satisfactory to you

What are important communication style concepts for multicultural counselors to be aware of?

You must use the textbook as a source (cite and reference) in your thread (at least 400 words). Choose one of the 3 options for your thread; do not respond to each question. Give your thread a title indicating what it is about. When you write your replies, you are encouraged to choose threads to reply to that are different than the one you chose to write on. The discussion board forums correspond with the current textbook reading. Include biblical integration; explain how the topic applies to your faith. Do not simply restate the text; give your own thoughts and analysis. One way to discuss the forum topic, is by giving a counseling example or situation to illustrate the point you are making. Do not use more than one direct quote in a post; quotes must be less than 40 words.

Critique how the social worker handled the discussion of confidentiality.

For parts 2) and 4), please incorporate other relevant, outside readings to the responses.

  1. Provide a critique on the Common Assignment Video (located in the 2FOR Tool Box for online students and located on the blackboard course page for face to face students) on the demonstration of skills (or lack of skills) of practicing from a non-judgmental approach. (3-4 pages) [NOTE – for online students, you must complete Module 5 before you are able to access this video]
  2. a) Critique the beginning of the session on how the social worker began the session.
    b) Critique how the social worker handled the discussion of confidentiality.
    c) Find five places in the video where the social worker is not practicing from a nonjudgmental approach.
  3. After completing your critique, you are required to work in pairs for a role-play and to do the following: Conduct a role-play in which you demonstrate the corrective actions or improvements that you would make as a social worker conducting the session shown in the video. Social Work Skills Lab 11 Each student is responsible to upload his or her own video of themselves as the social worker role-playing with another student playing the client. This can be done on Zoom or in-person with a third party videotaping. The video should be no longer than 5 minutes, and should not exceed 128MB (recording in Zoom will help keep the file size down).
  4. Write a reflection critiquing your effectiveness at applying a non-judgmental stance during your role-play. (3-4 pages) Please incorporate a minimum of 5 outside references in your critique. Examine the cultural practice of Bride Kidnapping and formulate a thesis or claim for why the practice is acceptable or unacceptable morally.

Read the Discussion Rubric carefully.
2. Then, after reading the Chapter on relativism and watching the video on Bride Kidnapping, examine the cultural practice of Bride Kidnapping and formulate a thesis or claim for why the practice is acceptable or unacceptable morally. Spend some time working on this thesis or claim. Please note that cultural relativism has problems, the biggest being the inability for equal rights. Make sure you are not just stating that you think is it fine because it is their culture. Try to think how you might view this if you were the one in their position. Many students say they would not like this and we do not practice this here thank goodness. That is a good start but go further to explain exactly what is wrong with doing this to any human being regardless of culture. If you think it is fine, make sure to tell us why it is okay to treat some people in this way and not others.
3. This article on Developing your Thesis opens in a new window, gives great advice and I would begin using it for this discussion board.
4. After you feel you have a good thesis or claim, provide solid reasons convincing us that we should be persuaded of your position. Simply telling us that is unethical without explaining what you mean and or not providing any reasons to persuade us, is not making a solid case. If your thesis is a good one, it will excite responses from your classmates. If we all agree with you, there is no point in making the claim. Choose something that at least half of us would disagree with. The next few sentences in your second paragraph should be reasons or evidence to support your claim.

How are we socializing the next generation of children?

Discussion #3: Are we socializing our kids to be violent? Why or Why not? Due Sept 17th – zoom discussion
No unread replies.No replies.
How are we socializing the next generation of children? Look around your environment and discuss whether we are over socializing our children to be violent people? How are we taught to solve our problems? How do our heroes solve their problems?

We have a culture of violence. Our games/play are/is violent, our stories are violent, our media is violent. OUR HISTORY IS VIOLENT. Here are some theories of why people become violence. ‘A 2009 DOJ study showed that more than 60 percent of the children surveyed were exposed to violence within the past year either directly or indirectly. Children’s exposure to violence, whether as victims or witnesses, is often associated with long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Children exposed to violence are also at a higher risk of engaging in criminal behavior later in life and becoming part of a cycle of violence.” Dept. of Justice.

Albert Bandura (1970’s 80’s) We get our repertoire of aggressive behavior from three sources, Biological factors, Observation/modeling, Direct experience

Social Learning theory- Differential AssociationEdwin Sutherland argued that all behavior is the result of socialization through interaction. That is, how we act depends how those around us act.” (Stark, pg. 188).

Frustration Aggression – Dollard et al 1939 – Interference with goal seeking behavior generates latent frustration and latent aggression.

Violence as American as Apple Pie. –Normative theory- social norms

The blood flows freely in America’s cities. But Hispanics and African Americans’ blowing away themselves and their neighbors, mass murderers, children killing each other with Dad’s gun, and other casual gun use will not affect the Republic – no matter how horrific. Much as the killings in the saloons of mining towns of the Wild West had no long-term effect other than giving us pulp westerns and B-movies.
But a different kind of gun use shaped the American West during the late 19th century. Violence against Indians. Violence against blacks. Against workers (early unions). Against small ranchers. This was terrorism by armed men for political purposes, directed at Americans, in an early America riven – to an extent easy for us to imagine today – by fissures of race, ethnicity, class, and geography. They proved that guns allow an organized minority to dominate the public. https://fabiusmaximus.com/2019/08/08/political-violence-in-america/ (Links to an external site.) What symbols represent American culture to you?

American Culture Scavenger Hunt

100 points Due Sept 12th

What symbols represent American culture to you? Often it is easier to recognize the symbols of cultures outside of your own. We often don’t take the time to examine the symbols of our own culture. This assignment is asking you to take a moment and consider what symbols represents America or American culture?

DO NOT USE the flag, Statue of Liberty or since 911 the World Trade Towers. What other things call up ideas of America? Is it baseball, the Simpsons, apple pie?

Select something that symbolizes “American” culture to you.
Write up a one paragraph explaining why you selected this object.
NOTE: You cannot use the flag, Statue of Liberty, the world trade center or a map of the US… these are too easy.
Be creative and think outside of the box.

Instructions: Type up a 1 paragraph to 1 page explanation of why you choose your symbol. Include the image with your write up. The scavenger hunt papers must be typed.

Grading: Papers submitted without the images will only receive ½ points and visa versa. Handwritten scavenger hunt papers will only receive ½ points.

Due: September 13th Be prepared to show and talk about your symbol.

Squires Symbol: I selecgted this symbol because it seems as if guns mean freedom to many people in the USA. We obsess about our guns and argue that it is our god given right to carry weapons and shoot each other. Guns seem to define us and it has been shown that people are willing to endanger their kids before they think about giving up their guns. With every major gun tragedy gun sales actually go up! The prevalence of guns shows that we live in a fear based society. This seems to make perfect sense to people.
