Create assessment questions that you think would be helpful for understanding the youth’s presenting issues and the family history and family dynamics that are impacting the current struggles.

Create assessment questions that you think would be helpful for understanding the youth’s presenting issues and the family history and family dynamics that are impacting the current struggles. You will need to create and post 5 questions in the discussion board for one of the 4 case studies that you signed up for. For each question, you need to specify who you are asking the question to, and whether they are asked individually or when the entire family is present. You also need to explain why you would ask each question and explain what you are hoping to get out of asking the question. Each case study has a general discussion board where you are encouraged to collaborate with the other students who share that case. Note that the general discussion will not be marked.
Review the questions posted in the discussion board before you post your own, and do not reiterate a question that has been asked by another student. Do not reiterate questions that have been already asked, as we may need to do assessments with other practitioners in the room, and sometimes the question we want to ask has been already been asked, so what do we do then? We need to be flexible with our questions and our line of thinking. You can also review the questions that may have already been posted and you can come up with follow up questions. These case studies are each incredibly complex with a lot of information attached, but there is also a lot of information missing about these families.
Keep in mind that each of these case studies present unique differences with the individual and the family, whether this centers around race, culture, immigration, sexual or gender identity, disability, etc. You need to keep these differences in mind for this assignment and future assignments in this course. Be thoughtful about how these differences impact the individual and family presenting concerns, how they can create barriers and how they can also be strengths.

Look around the county you live in and think about something that would help your community. Explain why and how your community would benefit from this project.

Community Paper: (20%) During this semester you will be given the opportunity to reflect on ideas from the readings and relate these ideas to sociological theories, social problems, community programs, social actions, and social politics. You will be developing a project/paper about something that is needed in YOUR community. Look around the county you live in and think about something that would help your community. Your project will need to include information about your area such as population, education, medium income, and so forth. Explain why and how your community would benefit from this project. Your paper will be graded based on your knowledge and incorporation of course material and your ability to write a coherent, well organized, and grammatically correct product. There is a three-page minimum and five-page maximum as well as five creditable references (academic peer reviewed articles), and ASA formatting.

Pick any topic that deals with any social issue related to the course materials or lectures. Write a sociological paper that is analytical and critical. It is imperative to note that the writing of a sociological paper requires the primary use of scholarly sociological sources, such as sociological scholarly journals, sociological books, and sociological edited collections. The paper must include a minimum of FIVE sociological scholarly sources (books, scholarly journal articles) not including the course text books and relevant course materials.

The essay should be 6-8 pages in length, with one inch margins, size 12 font and double-spaced, not including the bibliography or title page. Students are required to include a full bibliography of all materials used in the paper.

Students should also note that government websites and statistical data are not scholarly sources and will not count as one of the five scholarly sources required for this paper. Government websites and statistical data provide information that is not scholarly and not analytical. Statistics denote a social trend but can be interpreted in numerous and contradictory ways. Statistics themselves are devoid of analysis. Simply stating a statistic does not explain or explore any critical sociological analysis. Similarly, government websites state government policy that is devoid of analysis, and usually reproduces mainstream stereotypes, assumptions and misconceptions. Critical sociological analysis provides a critique of mainstream stereotypes and assumptions. The use of government data requires critical sociological analysis. Please note that these government websites and statistics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Statistics Canada
  • Ministry of Immigration and Citizenship
  • Government of Canada website
  • Government of Ontario website

What do you think are some key differences in views of police and its role in society between the abolition and reform camps? Try to connect these different perspectives on police and community to concepts of individual and institutional discrimination.

One of the key demands of the recent Black Lives Matter-led protests in Canada, U.S., and other countries, has been to defund police, often under the umbrella term of “abolishing police”. Since the protests begun, a number of municipalities in North America have agreed to significantly reduce their police budgets, while others (ex. Toronto) have promised various policing reforms (from mandatory body cameras to de-escalation training and so on).

What do you think are some key differences in views of police and its role in society between the abolition and reform camps? Try to connect these different perspectives on police and community to concepts of individual and institutional discrimination.

Examine the scientific approach to the study of society and the humanistic approach to the study of society with a view to identifying the key issues which each approach addresses. Examine the nature of positivism with a view to determining whether sociology should be studied as a science.

How has cross-dressing served to subvert gender roles? How has cross-dressing been policed through history? Why is cross-dressing inherently destabilizing or considered a threat to a society, such as this one, that privileges heterosexuality and the gender binary?

The terms “cross-dressing” and “transgender” are not synonymous.
Gender is a social construct and a performance, something we do. Our gender performance might align with dominant notions of masculinity or femininity, or it might challenge or disrupt traditional gender expectations.
Cross-dressing, masquerade, and other forms of gender variance remind us that gender is neither natural nor fixed.
How has cross-dressing served to subvert gender roles?
How has cross-dressing been policed through history?
Why is cross-dressing inherently destabilizing or considered a threat to a society, such as this one, that privileges heterosexuality and the gender binary?

Terminology–
— Cross-dressing : wearing clothing assumed to be typical of the opposite gender (Note: transvestism )
— Drag : performance that aestheticizes gender for entertainment purposes. These performances are often hypermasculine or hyperfeminine .
— “ Transsexual may be used to refer to individuals who use hormonal and/or surgical technologies to alter their body in ways that may be construed as at odds with the sex assignment of birth or which may not be readily intelligible in terms of traditional conceptions of sexed bodies” ( Bettcher 46)
— “ Transgender may be used to refer to people who do not appear to conform to traditional gender norms by presenting and living genders that were not assigned to them at birth or by presenting and living genders in ways that may not be readily intelligible in terms of more traditional conceptions. The term may or may not be used to include transsexual ” ( Bettcher 46)

Through the specific lens of latino adolescents/ late adolescents (early adulthood) how does acculturation (thus acculturative stressors) impact ones socio-emotional, well being, thus identity?

Approaching research question: through the specific lens of latinx adolescents/ late adolescents (early adulthood) how does acculturation (thus acculturative stressors) impact ones socio-emotional, well being, thus identity?

Buckingham, S. L., & Suarez-Pedraza, M. C. (2019). “It has cost me a lot to adapt to here”: The divergence of real acculturation from ideal acculturation impacts Latinx immigrants’ psychosocial wellbeing. American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 89(4), 406–419.

Through the process of acculturation, how immigrants change and maintain their culture are drastically realigned. This study sought to understand the relation between acculturation and wellbeing through a person-environment fit lens; essentially, if immigrants acculturate (with less stress) in ways that ways they prefer, is there any drastic self-reporting difference in ones well being? Through path analyses and constructivist grounded theory methods. (still unclear of what this is, Vygotsky? Piaget?) Results indicated if Latinx immigrants can acculturate in the ways they prefer, the better their wellbeing is reported. This research suggests that practitioners and policymakers should consider ways to support immigrants to acculturate in the ways they desire as opposed to solely focusing their efforts on particular acculturation strategies.

Cammarota, J.J., Moll, L.C., Gonzalez, M., & Cannella, C.M. (2012). Sociocultural Perspectives on Interpersonal Relationships in Schools.

The purpose of this piece is to identify Latinx adolescence alienation in an acculturated  education system. A proposal to solve this is to find others in similar situations and unite together; These groups exemplifies how peer groups can overcome structural challenges to learning. Through creating “new capital” Regardless of formal academic success, all of the A.N.A. (Accommodate not assimilate) students are supported in their efforts at school achievement through a social network that was based in spite of their cultural identities

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between involvement in community life and commitment to educational advancement. In the study, they investigated more than 500 latinx recipients, and their relationship between family, and student academic achievement (measured through a students attendance, homework completion rates, and overall grades). The study concluded that the relationship between the two is far more reciprocally complex than typically acknowledged.

Identify the role of the social worker as a change agent in addressing this challenge and identify the organization’s readiness to change, which includes specifying existing (internal and external) barriers and supports.

Demonstrate developing analytical skills regarding community engagement and creating interventions to address unmet community needs. Students will write a focused 5 to 6-page, double-spaced paper discussing a population of interest and social issue (e.g. long-term care for frail elders; child care and single working parents; domestic violence and immigrant women) within an arena (a community in which the student lives, has field, works, or volunteers). The paper will:

    • identify the social problem using supporting literature from scholarly sources;
    • analyze how dynamics of power, privilege and oppression influence and maintain this
      social problem; and
    • develop a strategy to address this problem within the specific context of the chosen
      community or population; and
    • explain why this problem needs to be addressed using the social work values of social,
      economic, and/or environmental justice.

Briefly present an organization and summarize some problem/issue/challenge that the organization seeks to address using evidence to support their description.

Analyze how dynamics of power, privilege and oppression create, support or inhibit the resolution of the challenge. This will entail identifying factors internal and external to the organization (staff, service users, limited resources, municipal policies, etc.) that contribute to the issue.

Identify the role of the social worker as a change agent in addressing this challenge and identify the organization’s readiness to change, which includes specifying existing (internal and external) barriers and supports.

Identify three possible alternative change interventions and explain which of these they consider to be the optimal choice. They must justify this choice using social work values of social, economic, and environmental justice.

Provide an evaluation strategy to assess the effectiveness of the intervention.

Conduct interviews with 2 people who are of different social categories about their perceptions, beliefs, and experiences with social inequalities. These categories can include race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, disability status, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc

In week 6 you read about social inequalities in everyday life. For this assignment, you will give real world examples of how this manifests. You will conduct interviews with 2 people who are of different social categories about their perceptions, beliefs, and experiences with social inequalities. These categories can include race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, disability status, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc. Each person should fulfill two or more different categories in order to also analyze intersectionality. For example, if you interview a gay black man, his experiences would be based on the intersection of sexual orientation, race, and gender. You would then select a second person to interview who would intersect with different categories (Asian Straight Man, White Transgender Woman, Hispanic gay women, etc., wealthy black woman, etc ). You can interview any 2 people you want, as long as they are from at least 2 different social categories (they can be the same on others).

You should interview them on their experiences, beliefs, perceptions, etc., on social inequality, and the ways they deal with it in society. Make sure to provide examples of some of the experiences they have had, and why they feel they have experienced social inequality. You also should explore which part of their social categories they feel has led to the most social inequality (i.e. their race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.).

You should then compare and contrast their views and experiences. Within your comparison you should refer to the course concepts to help analyze and explain your interviewees views. You should reference the learning resources and other research sources to discuss how their cultural categories may have influenced their experiences and views. Make sure to also include a discussion on intersectionality. For example, if you are interviewing a white straight woman, and a black straight man, you may find that they have had very different experiences with social inequality based both race and gender. Why would that be the case?

You should conclude your essay with a discussion of what you learned from your interviews, and what you think should be done to address any major problems that your interviewees have experienced.

I don’t want to see an interview transcript. However, you should be using extensive quotes from your interviewees in your essay in order to validate your discussion.
