Trudeau “takes a knee”

Trump with a bible.

The goal of this assignment is to have you think about the application of a sociological perspective to a contemporary phenomenon: the protests against policing in Canada and the United States. After completing the assigned readings listed above, you need to take a look at the links provided that show (or seem to show, depending on your view) two very different public responses by the democratically (more or less) elected representatives of the federal governments of Canada and the United States. The contrast at least seems to be as clear as possible: on the one hand, the Canadian Prime Minister joined in with demonstrators protesting racist police brutality and kneels for nearly nine minutes in a gesture of solidarity, and on the other hand, the U.S. President orders soldiers to tear gas protesters and stands in front of a church holding a bible.

  1. Why do you think Trudeau joined the demonstrators? What do you think it means to the rest of Canadian society? [Please note: it’s obvious that, in a way, everyone who thinks about this will think about it in slightly different ways. Everyone knows that; don’t include it in your answer.] Are there patterns of response to Trudeau’s actions at that demonstration? In answering this question you are expected to make connections between this current event and the assigned readings for this assignment.

If “race” is a social construct, should we not identify ourselves with specific ethnic and cultural groups? Are ethnicity and culture important for how we understand our sexuality and gender identities?

Answer each question using critical thinking and analyzing from a sociologist view point. Title each answer with the corresponding questions.

Fully acknowledging the extremely problematic language and attitudes at play in the Craigslist posts analyzed in Ward’s article about straight dudes who have sex with dudes, and understanding why Ward disavows this type of same-sex behavior from queerness, is there a way to understand what is happening here in a larger context and then to imagine it in a different context? How might we be able to understand the desires of these men in a context that was not characterized by misogyny, homophobia, racism, and toxic masculinity? If heteronormativity and compulsory heterosexuality could be removed from the social context of these posts and the desires these men feel, how do you think some of these men might identify? Would there be anything wrong for a self-identified straight man to post an add honestly looking for a particular form of male bonding that involved certain kinds of same-sex activity if such posts and desires were not so compromised by toxic masculinity?

If “race” is a social construct, should we not identify ourselves with specific ethnic and cultural groups? Are ethnicity and culture important for how we understand our sexuality and gender identities??

The very first clip I link you to in the Power Point is an animated educational video from the 2007 documentary For the Bible Tells Me So. It is a worthwhile and informative little video that addresses scientific research into the makeup of sexual orientation and the problematic role the Christian ex-gay movement plays in trying to change people’s sexual orientation. However, I would say, that while this video is not inaccurate, it is itself a bit problematic in terms of how it presents some of this information. Why do you think I say that? Given what we’ve learned in this course so far, what do you think might be a bit problematic in terms of how this video presents some of its information?

Given the argument made by Dines and Jenkins about mainstream heterosexual pornography, is all pornography by its nature exploitative or harmful? Can pornography operate differently?

Based on what you’ve learned from this week’s recorded lecture as well as our oral presentations, what do you think is the best route forward to address the problems currently associated with sex work? Should sex work be criminalized as it once was? Is the Nordic model a good substitute? What about red light districts? Or should we decriminalize or even fully legalize?

Imagine that you are running for a state office and you have to prepare a position paper for a debate on controversial issues in the news. Introduce your position using a thesis statement in the first paragraph, including a quote, question, or statistic from your reliable sources and an overview of the main points you will cover.

Imagine that you are running for a state office and you have to prepare a position paper for a debate on controversial issues in the news. [Select one (1) of the topics addressed in Weeks 5-9 of this class.]  Remember that you are addressing a significant segment of your state’s population and you want to be elected to public office, so your topic will have to have a broad appeal, such as public trust and the media, the loss of privacy, safeguarding the First Amendment, online harassment, and the dangers of privatizing public information, among other topics from those chapters.

You will want your position paper to demonstrate critical thinking, sound logic, valid claims, personal passion, and credible support that is cited correctly because the paper will be provided to the news media before the debate and will be scrutinized by the media and reported on regarding these criteria.

Write a two to three (2) page (500 min) paper in which you:

  1. Introduce your position using a thesis statement in the first paragraph, including a quote, question, or statistic from your reliable sources and an overview of the main points you will cover. (It’s important to grab the audience’s interest and inform the audience of what the main and support points are.)
  2. Provide two or three (2-3) major points to support your thesis statement. (Put each major point in a separate paragraph.)
  3. Provide one (1) paragraph in which you identify and answer an expected argument against your view.
  4. Organize arguments and support your claims effectively.

Demonstrate personal passion for your position and critical thinking with persuasive language, sound logic, valid claims, and credible support for the claims
