Explain how the rules of exogamy and endogamy limit your choice of a mate in U.S. society. Is there really such a thing as ”free-choice” in mate selection?

The Balance of Power in Dating

Part 1: Mate and Marriage Selection Article

1. Use examples from the reading to show how the different routes to marriage often underscore a culture’s beliefs about women and gender roles.

2. Explain how the rules of exogamy and endogamy limit your choice of a mate in U.S. society. Is there really such a thing as ”free-choice” in mate selection?

Part 2: The Balance of Power In Dating Article

1. Dating etiquette (who drives, who pays, opening doors, etc.) used to follow a very obvious and traditional formula. Have dating norms changed? Do men still take the lead on first dates?

2. How do you define power? How would you design a study to measure power within a relationship? Do you think self-reports are an accurate way to measure power?

3. What are the factors that affect the balance of power in relationships? Think of a couple that you know well (or yourself and a partner). Do these factors explain who has more power in the relationship?

Part 3: Watch video and answer questions

1.What are two stated differences of traditional dating in the video clip?
2.How does technology relate with traditional dating values?

Part 4: Association is not Causation Article

Briefly describe your setting or social media platform. Summarize the gender-related behaviors you observed, comparing masculine and feminine behaviors.

Public gender performances

Sociology views gender as something we “do” or “perform,” not something we “are.” This topic involves observing and analyzing public gender performances. You may do this in an actual live setting or on social media. Either way you will need pen, paper, and about 30 minutes to observe before writing up your analysis

Option 2: Observe gender performances on social media. Pick a social media platform and study your feed systematically: Look at the first 20 posts from people of one sex, watching closely for online behaviors that indicate gender in subtle or obvious ways, such as types of pictures posted, characteristics of written comments, use of emoticons, etc. Take notes on these. Then observe the first 20 posts from the other sex, again taking notes, and then do the write-up.

Write-up: Briefly describe your setting or social media platform. Then summarize the gender-related behaviors you observed, comparing masculine and feminine behaviors. Then pick a specific behavior (of either gender) to discuss in detail: What was it? How does it comply with gender role norms? How did other people in the setting respond to it? If someone of the other sex behaved that way, how would people respond?

Overview
As American citizens, we can use our voices to communicate to our authority figures about how their decisions can impact society. One of the ways that we as citizens can participate in the creation of a future where all citizens are treated equitably is to voice our collective needs to those that we have placed in positions of authority. Before we do so, we should understand the relationship among power, privilege, and other socio-structural factors and the life circumstances of individuals from different groups. This paper will give you space to think through these ideas and to better prepare you to make your voice heard and have a positive impact on the world.

Requirements
Read the chapter Privilege, Power, Difference, and Us, pp. 69–78.
Answer the following in a 2–3 page paper:
Summarize the chapter:
Define the concepts of power and privilege and how they relate.
Discuss the chapter in light of your textbook readings (especially Chapter 2: Analyzing Economic Inequalities):
What is your perspective on the relationship between power and privilege and social problems? Use specific examples to support your ideas.
If you could have a conversation with a person in a position of authority about the relationship between power, privilege, and current social problems, what would you discuss? What advice or tools would you suggest to help them gain more social intelligence in this area?
Use two sources from this week’s readings to support your writing. Cite the sources listed at least one time within your assignment
The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:
Describe the relationship between power, privilege, and other socio-structural factors and the life circumstances of individuals from different groups.

Is that simply cultural dress, or a religious identifier? Does wearing a burkha also mean submitting to a role for women that is in many ways diametrically opposed to the values that are instilled in their own home churches?

Challenges for Missionary Women

Based on your readings and the lecture materials this week, share one important concept that stood out to you and explain what impact it has on you as a missionary.

Single Women

Over the years, God has called many single women into his service overseas as missionaries. Whether like Lottie Moon they turned down would-be husbands because they were not ready to go with them as missionaries, or whether they had other motives to remain single, these women have made an incalculable contribution to the cause of missions. While in some ways they may be more vulnerable because they lack the support of a full nuclear family around them like their married counterparts, these ladies have been particularly successful in going places others dared not go, and in achieving influence in areas where others had not yet gone.

Many times single women would bond with local families or groups in which they became like family to them. This meant that often they had a deeper understanding of cultural nuances and societal expectations than other missionaries. The fact that they were not distracted with the need to spend a significant amount of their time in home-making, caring for their children, and providing them with an education has meant that single women had considerably more disposable time to devote to their work—often with tremendous results. Where would the world be without a Mother Theresa, and countless other single women who have served alongside her as missionaries in all the world!

Single women on the field do face special challenges. These may include loneliness, pressures to marry, unclear social status in the host culture, lack of clout in decision-making, finding appropriate living arrangements, and having to cater to multiple sets of role expectations.

One area in which women may face special challenges is tied to the culturally assigned roles for men and women in their host culture. Obviously both men and women equally will have to make important cultural adjustments, and every society defines gender expectations distinctly, so that men will have to learn how men behave in their adopted society, and women will have to learn how women behave in their adopted society. In practice, however, the harder challenges seem to fall upon women. Sometimes dress can be a challenge.

In Muslim societies missionary women often debate whether to wear a burkha which covers them totally.

Is that simply cultural dress, or a religious identifier? Does wearing a burkha also mean submitting to a role for women that is in many ways diametrically opposed to the values that are instilled in their own home churches?

Does identification to the local culture imply subjecting oneself to those practices as well, or should the missionaries model a different way to live in these areas?

Does the study use an inductive or deductive methodology? Does the study use probability or non-probability sampling? Which specific type of sampling was used? What type of design was used – pre-experimental, quasi-experimental, experimental?

Part 2:

For each article, address the following points:

  • Name of Article:
  • Summary:

o Provide an overview of the Methods section for the article. Include information that would paint a picture of what was done – pretend I asked you to quickly describe what was done in a study and write that information here. Use your Part 1 responses as a guide.

  • Critique:

o What did the authors of the articles do especially well with the Methods section? Provide examples from the article.

o What do you wish they had discussed that they did not (i.e., what changes you would recommend)?

  • Conclusions:

o Overall, what is your assessment of the strength of the article as it pertains to the Methods section? How did you come to this conclusion?

o What do you see as the practical relevance of the information learned?

Comparison of the Articles

  • In comparing the two articles, which do you believe has the stronger Methods section? Why

Assignment #3 – Part 1: Identify the Components

Directions: Delete the section that does not apply to this article & copy the section that does apply. For instance, if both of your articles are quantitative, copy and paste the quantitative items, so you just have quantitative items for both articles. Delete the items for a qualitative article.

Name of Article:

Complete this section if your article is quantitative.

  1. What is the research question/hypothesis? If there are several hypotheses, pick the one that is of most interest to you.
  2. For the hypothesis you selected, identify the following:
  3. Independent Variable(s)– IV:
  4. Dependent Variable(s)– DV:
  5. Mediating or Moderating Variable(s) – if applicable – MV:
  6. Identify the measures, reliability, and level of measurement for each variable in the selected hypothesis – if reliability is not noted, indicate that it is not noted:

For example:

I V: depression – Beck Depression Inventory – internal consistency=.85 – interval/ratio

  1. Does the study use an inductive or deductive methodology?
  2. Does the study use probability or non-probability sampling? Which specific type of sampling was used?
  3. What type of design was used – pre-experimental, quasi-experimental, experimental?
  4. What information is presented on the ethical standards?
  5. In looking at the sample, is diversity apparent? Remember, this can include age, race, gender or anything you see as related to diversity.

Complete this section if your article is qualitative.

  1. What were the research question(s) for the study? If no research question is noted, what are they attempting to learn?
  2. What were the main concepts under study – similar to variables, not their results?
  3. How many questions were asked? Were the questions from a standardized measure (i.e., did they say they got the questions from an existing source) or were they created for the study or did they use an unstructured approach?
  4. Does the study use an inductive or deductive methodology?
  5. Does the study use probability or non-probability sampling? Which specific type of sampling was used?
  6. What type of design was used – pre-experimental, quasi-experimental, experimental?
  7. What information is presented on the ethical standards?
  8. In looking at the sample, is diversity apparent? Remember, this can include age, race, gender or anything you see as related to diversity.
