INSTRUCTIONS
In the first chapter, we were introduced to various social psychological perspectives. For this discussion, choose one of the perspectives that you learned about (sociocultural, evolutionary, social learning, or social cognitive) and use that perspective to interpret why men typically pay the expenses on a date.

GUIDELINE
In these discussions, you will be required to respond to questions that will ask you to apply concepts in the text to real-world situations. You need to make substantive responses of 150-200 words. You need to support your answers with research and it must be cited. These discussions will be graded on three criteria: integration of material from text/powerpoints, completeness in answering the question and clarity (i.e. spelling, punctuation etc). These will account for 20% of your grade.

Essay Assignment Ch. 5 (CS)

Based on class text/readings, class lectures, and class materials (including videos) select ONE out of the following four essay topics. In a minimum of 300 words, create and articulate a strong and clear detailed response, providing information and examples to fully explain the question selected. Number your essay by the number #1-4 of each essay in the list below. Your essay should be clearly written, using appropriate grammar, correct spelling, and proper citations. Your essay should be well-organized and maintain focus on the question. “Proper citation” entails placing quotation marks around any direct quotes you pull from the book with a reference to the page(s) from which the quote was drawn. If you are paraphrasing material in your textbook, you should indicate the page(s) from which you are paraphrasing at the end of the paraphrased content.

Answer the following question.
1. In what ways are sports reflective of the cultural values of a society? Be specific and provide examples to elaborate your response.

Expand the range of surveys reviewed to include the household travel surveys conducted by regional and state agencies, as well as to include the National Household Travel Survey. Compile a set of transit passenger surveys, each of which include opinion questions, to compare the views of transit riders with the views of the general public.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

STUDY OBJECTIVE
This “seed grant” research project compiled a set of 56 US public opinion polls that asked
respondents their opinions about public transit. The goal of the work was two-fold. The first and primary goal was to assemble a large set of transit-related survey questions that can be used to inspire the design of future surveys on the topic of public transit. The assembled collection of questions will help future researchers and transit planners by:
1.
Identifying the key topics of interest in public opinion research on public transit;
2.
Identifying topics that have been poorly researched to date and may thus be worth while for future research; and
3.
Providing a bank of questions that can be used to generate ideas for future question wording.

A further objective of the project was to identify general patterns in public opinion about transit that may emerge across multiple surveys.

METHODOLOGY
This study identified and analyzed surveys of US residents that included questions about
attitudes regarding public transportation. Public transportation was defined as local or regional services. (Surveys asking only about long-distance rail were excluded.) The project excluded the transit passenger surveys that transit agencies routinely conduct, since the focus of the research was to ascertain the views of the American public at large rather than opinions from transit passengers only. The initial search for relevant surveys netted well over 80 that asked something related to public transportation.

The questionnaires obtained were further reviewed to identify those surveys that contained questions relevant to the study as defined by two criteria:
1.
Questions had to be opinion-based (as opposed to questions about travel behaviors such as the frequency of transit usage).
2.
Questions had to ask about public transit on its own (without combining public transit with another topic such as roads/highways or bike infrastructure).

The review process identified a final set of 56 surveys containing one or more questions each that match the criteria.
The survey questions were then reviewed to identify themes covered in many polls, and
all questions on each theme were compiled and analyzed.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
Reviewing the entire set of polling questions related to public transit revealed that the
surveys commonly address the following themes: the reasons people support public transit; opinions about transit service quality; the extent to which people support improving transit as a general concept; and support levels for raising additional revenues to support transit. The analysis of the poll questions found that strong majorities of people believed that transit brings a number of specific benefits to their community, especially congestion relief and accessibility to vulnerable residents. Strong majorities also support improvements to transit as a general concept. However, fewer people support the general concept of increased spending on transit, and considerably fewer than half support raising any specific tax to increase transit funding, except for sales taxes, which usually enjoy majority support.

The study findings suggest that fruitful avenues for building upon this review of poll findings would be to:
Expand the range of surveys reviewed to include the household travel surveys conducted by regional and state agencies, as well as to include the National Household Travel Survey.
Compile a set of transit passenger surveys, each of which include opinion questions, to compare the views of transit riders with the views of the general public.
For the subset of polls for which data files or crosstabs are available, review how opinions vary by key socio-demographic and travel behavior factors (age, gender, transit use, etc.).

The findings from the current review also suggest some types of questions that have not been commonly asked but might fill important gaps in knowledge, such as:
More directly ask respondents why they support public transit. The existing polls typically break this information into two questions, one asking about benefits perceived and another asking whether or not people support more or better transit.
More directly ask respondents who say they would not support additional funding for transit why they hold this opinion.

How does housing impact individuals’ lived experiences, life outcomes and opportunity? How do you feel your housing and living environment has impacted your life thus far? Are things better or worse today? What efforts are being done to address this and are they effective? Why or why not?

Housing segregation and discrimination in the United States

In a 5-7 page paper: Explore and document current patterns of housing segregation and discrimination in the United States today. You should reference specific cities in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and West Coast. Be sure to explore not only segregation and discrimination based on race, but also based on sexual orientation and even families with children. How does housing impact individuals’ lived experiences, life outcomes and opportunity? How do you feel your housing and living environment has impacted your life thus far? Are things better or worse today? What efforts are being done to address this and are they effective? Why or why not? You may discuss “redlining” and its effects on your specified cities.

Does the Wiesel’s choices, of rhetorical/literary devices and the connection to his message and today’s society, in his argument effect the reader/audience and explain how and why?

Essay Assignment Ch. 4 (CS)

For this assignment, you will write an analysis of the rhetorical writing strategies and techniques Elie Wiesel uses in his speech – The Perils of Indifference, to achieve his purpose in his essay. Basically, does the Wiesel’s choices, of rhetorical/literary devices (logos, ethos, and pathos) and the connection to his message and today’s society, in his argument effect the reader/audience and explain how and why? Don’t forget to include a few connections to how Wiesel’s message applies today. Basically, was his use of rhetorical devices in his speech effective or ineffective AND how his message applies with what is going on in today’s global society?

Your claim statement should answer this question. Apply your critical reading skills to break down the whole of the text into the sum of its parts. Do NOT summarize or analyze the message of the speech or bring in other sources.

Sociological research

Assignment Content

Sociological research can be used to provide information to inform communities about human behaviors in their neighborhood. Citizens can then use that information to understand and develop actions to take which could impact the quality of life for the groups who live there. This week’s assignment will give you the opportunity to consider human behavior related to crime and substance use issues in your community from a sociological perspective. Use your knowledge of sociological research to educate families about this kind of human behavior.

Scenario:

Your local community center has started to host orientation classes for groups of parents of middle- and high-school-aged children. These families have recently moved to the area or are looking to relocate and want to know more about your community. You are part of a group of citizens who wants to support these parents by sharing information about local crime and substance use issues so that they can make informed choices for their families. The community center has asked you to prepare an informational guide to share this information with them.

For this assignment:

Choose 1 sociological theory to interpret the connection between substance use issues and crime.
Choose 1 type of software to create a guide with visuals, such as Microsoft Word or Canva.

Develop a 2- to 3-page local guide in the form of a flyer, poster, pamphlet, or newsletter.

Use a software of your choice to create your guide and enrich it with visual images.

Include the following:

Define crime and what it means to conform in a sociological context.
Use a sociological theory to determine if there is a relationship between substance use issues and crime.
List social programs in your local area that can support parents and youth with information and family services related to substance use issues.
Support the information in your guide with data from current and factual resources.

Cite references in your guide.

Include a section with APA-formatted references. Do this to the best of your ability or use a citation generator if you need help.
