Analyzing and Researching Social Welfare Policies
Identify a policy or rule in your school, job, or personal situation. Where did it originate, and on what or whose authority?
What steps does it follow as it is applied? Are there unintended consequences of the policy? Who is directly affected?
Who is indirectly affected? Does the actual impact reflect the original goal?
Briefly respond to the following questions:
1) What is the difference between traditional criminology research and studies that approach crime from a life course perspective?
2) What are turning points and why are they important for desistance ?
PowerPoint slides – you must respond to the following points:
• Identify the topic.
• What is the central issue of the topic being discussed?
• Who was each of the authors’ intended audience? And how do you know?
• What is the summary or abstract of each argument?
o What are each of the two sides saying to dispute or support the argument?
o What are the apparent underlying assumptions for each of the arguments?
• What allowed you to take an unbiased approach to the arguments? Did the assumptions you had about the issue before reading the articles change or remain the same?
• What questions did the arguments raise in your mind?
• What are the writers’ credentials, purpose, and motivation for writing?
• Where do the writers disagree about the facts or the interpretation of the facts?
• Where do the writers disagree about underlying beliefs, values, or assumptions?
• What forms of persuasion are being used? How are the authors’ each using pathos, logos, and ethos in their arguments?
• What was left out of the arguments, either because the author might not have wanted you to know, or because the author was not thorough? How did this affect your response to the argument?
• How does this issue relate to credentials, and the “Family and Human Ecosystems” model? [yeah I do not about this one, so skip it unless you want to go out of your way to look it up]
• How is this issue relevant to now?
• Evaluate whether or not you feel the author’s argument was valid, successful and/or persuasive.
Describe the original source for its active ingredient, the original world region from where it came, and how it was originally used in this cultural context.
Outline the key innovations that have made the drug more potent, more available, and less expensive over time. Finally, describe how and for what purposes it is used today.
Give citations to course readings or to other scholarly work to support your statements (websites are not acceptable). The Court wright book and the textbook are excellent sources of material for the assignment.

Write-up and submission. Please write-up responses to the following questions (see below), add the free-list responses and then submit on blackboard under. For this assignment it is not necessary to write an entire page of prose. However, you do need to include the entire list of drugs, and positive effects, modes of using, and negative effects for one of the drugs.
How many drugs did the interviewee generate without probing? How many more drugs did the interviewee name using the three probing techniques? (ADD the list of drugs you generated on an additional page in the word file).
Describe the negative and positive effects and the modes of using given by the interviewee for the one drug you chose. Please report on any probing that you did to get clarification on terms and phrases. (ADD the list of positive and negative effects and modes of using along with the name of the drug on an additional page in the word file submission.
Choose a drug, and justify how it is a drug based on the definition given in the lesson 1a lecture. Briefly describe the different physiological, behavioral or mental effects the drug has. Finally, describe both positive and negative consequences that the drug can have for health and well-being.

“Sociology is a verb”
What does it mean to say that, “sociology is a verb”? Compare and contrast “personal” with “public” sociology as tools for bringing about social change..
The final exam consists of two questions. Answer both questions in essay format.
1. Sociology focuses on how society shapes and molds individuals, but sometimes those individuals might not be aware of just how much they have been influenced by their society. Using materials from weeks 1-3 of this course, and material from your Westboro Baptist Church paper, discuss how sociology helps you better understand the person that you are as a member of your society.
2. Throughout this course, you have repeatedly encountered Structural-functionalism and Social-conflict theory. How does each perspective inform your understanding of how society works? Use materials from weeks 4-6 of the course and insights gained from your Westboro Baptist Church paper to answer this question.
Identify two specific changes in social norms which occurred because of COVID-19 that will likely continue after the in the “reopening of the US.” Use at least one theoretical perspective to explain how those changes impact particular social institutions.
In your answer, consider polices and processes at the national (and international) level and how that has impacted specific changes in norms and behaviors that have changed for you. While you may consider values and beliefs, the focus of this discussion is on behavior. Be sure to include concepts and theory/theoretical perspectives from the modules and also focus on the chapters that address social institutions.
Choose one of the four groups from the list below.
Discuss gender socialization with regards to the group of your choice. Name at least two examples of how gender impacts the socialization process in your group and how this socialization reinforces gender role and identity.
You will need to elaborate and explain your example properly, using no less than 550 words. You can draw from your own experiences and/or your observation of others around you.
Example for each group (you may not use these examples in your post):
Family: boys are expected to help mow the lawn whereas girls are expected to help cook.
Peer Groups: boys get peer pressure from other boys to not show their emotions whereas girls are expected to share their emotions with other girls.
Education: boys are encouraged to major in STEM whereas girls are expected to major in “Pink Collar” occupations.
Media: men are portrayed as superheroes whereas women are portrayed as “damsels in distress.”
