Are humans, societies, cultures, or humans within various societies and cultures fundamentally different today than in the 1960s and 1970s?

For this writing project we will explore two famous sociological experiments: Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison and Milgram’s study on obedience. In your response, you should

(1) include a brief summary of each study and their significance/major findings. Then respond to the following:

(2) Were you surprised by the results of each study? Why or why not (be specific)?

(3) If replicated today (ignore ethical constraints for this part – let’s assume that IRBs would approve these studies now), how might the results compare and/or contrast to their initial instances? In other words, are humans, societies, cultures, or humans within various societies and cultures fundamentally different today than in the 1960s and 1970s?

(4) Are there real-world examples (or inspirations) that seem to legitimize the results of these studies (hint: consider instances like World War II and Abu Ghraib prison)? If so, what does that mean regarding the legacies of these studies? Defend each answer.

Your response should be 5 pages in length (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point, 1-inch margins).

Properly use and cite at least five sources.

Your response will be graded based on the following criteria (200 points total):

Syntax, form (i.e., flow of the paper and proper use of paragraphs), grammar, spelling, typographical errors, length, proper use of citations: 40 pts
Well defended answers to questions in the prompt: 160 pts

1 What is the sociological perspective? How does your cultural background influence your experiences with the social world?

2) Do you think society constrains our thoughts and behaviors as the text argues? Why or why not?

3) What is the difference between vertical and horizontal social structures?

5) Explain the difference between macrosociology and microsociology. How can we use macro and microsociology to understand social issues?

6) Why is research important in Sociology?

7) Why must researchers consider ethics before conducting research?

8) Imagine that you are the mayor of a city of about 100,000 residents. Similar to many other cities, yours has a mixture of rich and poor neighborhoods. Because you and one of your key advisers were sociology majors in college, you both remember that the type of neighborhoods in which children grow up can influence many aspects of their development. Your adviser suggests that you seek a large federal grant to conduct a small field experiment to test the effects of neighborhoods in your city. In this experiment, 60 families from poor neighborhoods would be recruited to volunteer. Half of these families would be randomly selected to move to middle-class neighborhoods with their housing partially subsidized(the experimental group), and the other 30 families would remain where they are (the control group). A variety of data would then be gathered about the children in both groups of families over the next decade to determine whether living in middle-class neighborhoods improved the children’s cognitive and social development. You recognize the potential value of this experiment, but you also wonder whether it is entirely ethical, as it would
be virtually impossible to maintain the anonymity of the families in the experimental group and perhaps even in the control group. You also worry about the political problems that might result if the people already in the middle-class neighborhoods object to the new families moving into their midst. Do you decide to apply for the federal grant? Why or why not?

What method would allow you to collect data to study this issue and how would you conduct this data collection.

Find a social issue in our society today that interests you.
1. Describe the issue and your interest
2. What theory would be most appropriate to look at this issue and why
3. What method would allow you to collect data to study this issue and how would you conduct this data collection.

HInt: If you are using a macro theory you should use a macro method… Same with a micro theory = micro method. For example, functionalism and conflict theory are macro and should use a quantitative method (survey or experiment). If you are using a micro theory like symbolic interactionism you should use a qualitative method (semi-structured interview or ethnography)

Identify the one most significantly related Human Need from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

For this assignment, you will write a 2-3 page paper that builds on the discussion board for the week on Human Rights. NOTE: You may not select Article 16 used for the discussion board. In your paper, you should:

Identify an article from the University Declaration of Human Rights; (1 point)
Identify the one most significantly related Human Need from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs; (1 point)
Identify a potential social work client group or practice area where this issue is likely to surface; (3 points)
Research the prevalence of your issue globally. You should provide a brief review of the literature that indicates how frequently your issue occurs, if there are certain parts of the world that experience more difficulties than others, if there are certain populations more affected by your issue than others, etc. (NOTE: the questions on prevalence should be used as a guide for the type of information to provide, not as specific questions that must be answered). (5 points)

As an example, let’s say you identify Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person from the UDHR. The related Human Need from Maslow would be safety and security. You might decide that a social work practice area is child abuse, and you would then go do some research about the prevalence and forms of violence against children around the world.

You should consider using websites such as the United Nations (United Nations Human Rights (Links to an external site.)) both to get some current information on your topic as well as identify some potential areas of interest. Other websites include the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC (Links to an external site.)) or the World Health Organization (WHO (Links to an external site.)).

Blog should include a basic description of the content of the music chosen, to orient the reader and give any necessary context. Additionally, analysis and evaluation of the content should consist of a coherent thesis statement that is logically supported with evidence.

The questions below should help in thinking about the cultural elements in the song/album, and will serve as a guide for analysis and evaluation. An effective analysis should be structured around a thesis statement, but will address these questions. In other words, the job is not to simply answer these questions one by one. Instead, writer must engage in writing as a process and develop a coherent and logical argument that deals with these questions. This is where critical thinking and communication are crucial skills.
