List and explain at least two reasons Maureen may fairly expect excellent job candidates by hiring former varsity athletes, and list and explain at least two reasons Maureen may not end up with optimal candidates by advantaging former varsity athletes when selecting employees. Explain the sociological factors that inform your answer.

Emphasis should be put on sociology in sport

Prompt 1:
You are the athletics director at a private mixed-gender high school in Montreal. Your school, which was founded in 1907, has a very rich athletic history that has traditionally centered around the men’s football team. Many prominent, wealthy alumni are supporters of the team. Recently, after hearing stories in the media about the risk of concussion associated with football, some parents have begun to question whether it remains appropriate for the school to offer a football team. Although the risk of concussion was the factor that first raised questions, it seems there are many mixed-ideas amongst the parents, staff, and supporters regarding the risk and benefits of maintaining the football program. List and discuss three reasons to support maintaining the football program and three reasons to support cancelling the football program.

Prompt 2:
Affirmative action is defined as the practice or policy of favouring individuals belonging to groups known to have been discriminated against. For example, companies may be more likely to hire a sports broadcaster who is a visible minority (e.g., gender, racial, ethnic) to demonstrate their value of promoting cultural diversity. Discuss the potential positive and negative implications of affirmative action within sporting contexts.

Prompt 3:
Research has shown that many parasport coaches consider themselves to be “accidental experts”. The term “accidental expert” refers to the fact that parasport coaches are often able-bodied, had no intention of coaching parasport athletes at the outset of their coaching careers (i.e., had no specific training related to adapted sport), were introduced to parasport coaching when an athlete with a disability entered their program, and subsequently have had to learn (often on their own) everything they need to know about coaching parasport. Using course content, discuss the sociological factors that explain how our sport systems have been set up in such a way that parasport coaches are so often “accidental experts”.

Prompt 4:
Maureen is the CEO of a medical devices company and she is currently recruiting candidates for the Director of Sales position in her company. When Maureen reviews application packages, she finds she is always attracted to candidates who were former athletes, particularly those who competed at the varsity level in University. In her career Maureen has had several former varsity athletes as employees and she has consistently been impressed by their performance. List and explain at least two reasons Maureen may fairly expect excellent job candidates by hiring former varsity athletes, and list and explain at least two reasons Maureen may not end up with optimal candidates by advantaging former varsity athletes when selecting employees. Be sure to explain the sociological factors that inform your answer.

Analyze the internal and external market factors of the nation your sport organization is looking to join. Consider what factors impact the target nation’s market from within, but also outside elements. Determine specific political factors that could impact the success of your organization’s expansion into an international market and explain possible approaches to addressing these factors.

Target Market Factors

In Module Six, you will submit a draft of the target market factors section of NFL. You will use the information you have established regarding your target nation to analyze the target market within that nation. Markets within different countries will have their own unique rules and regulations that must be considered when looking to expand. For this milestone, you will analyze international and external market factors, political factors, and cultural factors and use this information to predict communication challenges that your organization could face when moving into the target market. You will also describe ways in which these challenges can be managed. Finally, you will describe your competitor’s media preferences and what your organization can offer to the chosen market. Also, establish how your sport organization differs from others, being sure to include an analysis of pricing.
In your submission, be sure to include the following critical elements:

A. Analyze the internal and external market factors of the nation your sport organization is looking to join. Consider what factors impact the target nation’s market from within, but also outside elements.

B. Determine specific political factors that could impact the success of your organization’s expansion into an international market and explain possible approaches to addressing these factors.

C. Determine specific cultural factors that must be considered for your organization to be successful in the target market and explain possible approaches to addressing these factors.

D. Predict communication challenges that your organization could face when moving to the target market and describe ways that these challenges can be managed.

E. Describe what your organization can offer to the chosen market that it is currently missing or lacking.

F. Determine direct and indirect competitors to your organization within your target market, explaining the relationship and why they are competitors.

G. Determine the demographics within your target nation that your organization will pursue and justify your response.

H. Identify ways that competitors use media to promote their organizations and explain why these ways are effective with the chosen demographic.

I. Establish how your sport organization differs from competitors already existing in this market. Support your response with examples.

J. Analyze the pricing associated with attending sporting events within this market. Support your analysis with specific examples.

Conduct an essentially research project to write a research paper on a sport law related topic of your interest.

Sport Law Research

This instruction is intended to provide you direction in writing your research papers. They are not exhaustive, but merely provide guidance in your writing. There will be some specifics on here, but by and large, I cannot tell you how to write your paper; that is your job. You as a group are expected to write a research paper that does not merely summarize a topic but instead critically analyzes a topic and offers a discussion based upon previous research findings as well as your own opinion injected into the paper. You will be expected to offer critical analysis and thinking on your topic, not just talk and talk for pages and pages.

Introduction:
In a group of 3 or 4 students, you will essentially conduct a research project to write a research paper on a sport law related topic of your interest. Questions and corresponding responses for class discussion must be included as well.

If you were considering building a sportsplex somewhere in the northeastern United States, where would you build it? Choose your ideal location based on demographics or other criteria that you can justify. How much will it cost to purchase the land? Draw a rough diagram of the land and how your facility will fit on the land. Make sure you focus on the topography of the land and the orientation of the facility on the land.

Sport Management

Case Study: Gil’s Sportsplex Chapter 6

If you were considering building a sportsplex somewhere in the northeastern United States, where would you build it? Choose your ideal location based on demographics or other criteria that you can justify. Then use the Internet to find an open plot of land that is large enough to sustain your facility. As an example, typical urban golf courses need around 110 to 120 acres, whereas resort courses are larger, averaging around 170 to 190 acres. A softball facility can range from 20 to 60 acres but could be much larger if additional land is acquired for future expansion. Thus, you need to make sure the plot of land is large enough. How much will it cost to purchase the land? Draw a rough diagram of the land and how your facility will fit on the land. Make sure you focus on the topography of the land and the orientation of the facility on the land.

What resources are needed to successfully implement your event?

How do you plan to evaluate the event’s success?

Do you think the IOC should create stricter rules for changing citizenship to compete? For instance, should athletes know the language, have visited the country, have lived in the country for a certain amount of time? Discuss your reasoning. What are the positives and negatives of switching allegiances? Research and give one positive and one negative

IOC Rules

Changing passports and competing for another country is not new in the realm of international sport. But in recent years, we are seeing an uptick as many athletes investigate trading in their original passport for an opportunity to compete on the international level for a different country. They may have a better chance of competing at the international level if they switch allegiances.

In the past, the Olympics brought together countries around the world to compete as united teams against other nations. However, since 1992, there has been an increase in athletes changing their passports to compete for countries other than the one where they were born or lived. In many cases, they made the change because the depth of the talent pool in the selected country wasn’t as deep as it was in their country of origin, so switching allegiances allowed for a better opportunity to qualify for the Olympics.

During the 2016 Olympics in Rio, the majority of runners on the track and field team for Bahrain Olympic were not from Bahrain; the team was made up of athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, Jamaica, Morocco, and Nigeria. To date, every medal won in track and field by Bahrain has been by individuals born in Africa and not Bahrain. The athletes competing for Qatar are another example of switching nationality. Out of the 39 athletes that Qatar sent to the Olympics in 2016, at least 17 were from another country. In fact, the majority of the players on Qatar’s handball team were from another country (Janse, Oonk, and Engbersen 2018).

Essentially, countries can grant citizenship to whomever they want to, even if that person does not know the language or has never even been to their country. It is up to the country to decide how citizenship is granted. Individual countries have their own laws and governance concerning citizenship. Citizenship is granted for various reasons including birth in the territory or to a citizen, marriage to a citizen, individual talent, or satisfaction of the basic residency requirements for naturalization. The majority of Olympic nationality switches occur because an athlete met the residency requirements of a certain country and then changed citizenship.

Rule 41 of the Olympic Charter allows athletes to represent one nation in international competition as long as three years have passed since the competitor represented her former country (Wiggins 2018). Therefore, an athlete can compete for her new country once three years have lapsed since competing for her previous country.

1 – Do you think the IOC should create stricter rules for changing citizenship to compete? For instance, should athletes know the language, have visited the country, have lived in the country for a certain amount of time? Discuss your reasoning (5 points).

2 – What are the positives and negatives of switching allegiances? Research and give one positive and one negative (10 points).
