Assignment Task 1: Briefing

In this task, you will examine WHO coaches coach by considering a variety of ways to profile (that is, categorise aspects of an athlete’s performance to inform the planning of coaching sessions) either a group of players or an individual athlete (depending on the sporting context chosen).

Three profiles are to be created: one profile can be a technical or physical one, the other two profiles MUST be from different perspectives (that is, not technical or physical ones).

Section 1: Gather evidence on a group of players or an individual athlete (depending on team or individual sport context) in a coaching session or interview a coach and create profiles from three distinct perspectives.

Choose ONE of the following three options:

1. Interview with a coach where you focus your questioning on the information the coach would want from the athlete in order to develop their performance and how they would measure this(i.e., profile) NO. OR

2. Profiling performers from a session that you are coaching. NO. OR

3. (ONLY choose option 3 if you cannot access a coaching session). Identifying and summarising relevant five research articles on the topic of profiling athletes (NB you must consider at least three different perspectives across the five articles – only ONE of these can be physical or technical). These summaries should be supported by a description of your article selection criteria.

What is the background research area? What is the research question? What is the methodology – quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods? Who are the participants and why were they chosen? What exact methods are being used and why?

Assignment 1: Experiencing Research Report and Reflection Actions

You have been asked to organize for yourself a practical research experience. There are 3 clear ways you could do this:
Immerse yourself in a research experience by participating in a research project being run at the University of Stirling as a research participant e.g. participation in staff or PhD or MSc student research project.
Engage with a researcher – interview them about one specific research project they are engaged in. Ideally this will be a post-doctoral research fellow, a research assistant or a PhD or MSc student rather than a staff member.
Engage with a stakeholder about research – identify a stakeholder, this may be the coach of a club you are a member of, or your workplace manager (sports/health-related), or employee of a charity (sports/health-related), or member of NHS or social care staff and interview them about what would be an important research question to answer in their workplace (related to Sports Studies/Health) and how this might be conducted as a project – you are looking for their ideas.
Given Covid-19 making it difficult to participate in face to face research, if you have participated in a research project in the past year and can remember enough about it to be able to write in the level of detail in the notes below, then writing about this past experience will also be acceptable.
You will need to take notes after the research participation or during the interview to help with your write up. These should be descriptive and also your own reflections.

Assessment: The report should be no more than 1000 words and include two sections:

Part 1: Descriptive Report describing the research experience. A concise descriptive report of the research undertaken/discussed (about 2/3 of the report).

Part 2: A brief reflective report about your experience/what you have learned about research from this (about 1/3 of your report).

Notes to help you:

Adopt a structure that is logical and uses appropriate headings;

The style of writing and presentation should be clear and logical;

Write a descriptive section that clearly describes the research project engaged in or interviewed about. You should consider these questions:

What is the background research area?
What is the research question?
What is the methodology – quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods?
Who are the participants and why were they chosen?
What exact methods are being used and why?
What is the procedure of the research i.e. what did they do/talk about doing
How would they go about analysing the data?
Write a reflective section on your experience of the process and what you have learned about research through this experience relative to the research process. You should consider these questions:

Did you enjoy the experience?
What specific topic did you learn more about?
What specific research methods did you learn more about?
Which part of the research process do you think you learnt the most about?
How is this experience going to influence your development as a researcher and your future research project?

Are inflatable paddle boards less stable? Can inflatable paddle boards pop? How safe are inflatable paddle boards?

Benefits of inflatable paddleboards

We’d like an article discussing the advantages of inflatable paddle boards. Common questions;

are inflatable paddle boards less stable?

can inflatable paddle boards pop?

how safe are inflatable paddle boards?

Inflatable paddleboards are just as safe as hard boards when used as advised. They are constructed with internal cross stitching that results in an incredibly rigid board when pumped to pressure. Because of this cross stitching, a board will not likely pop. A huge advantage of inflatable paddleboards is they fold up in a compact package that can be put in a trunk or checked on an airplane.

What information is fact? What information is opinion? What opinions are supported? How well are they supported? Is there a gap in information? In logic? Can you find instances of bias? Is the author successfully persuasive?

Article Review 2

Focus: NCAA Bylaw concerns / or / PED’s Performance Enhancing Drugs

Find an article that analyzes the use of PED’s in sport, and follow the prompts to complete your assignment.

A review of a journal article examines a scholarly article’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of what the article is attempting to accomplish. Your review should include description, paraphrases, and your own analysis. Any analysis included should help readers to assess the article’s value without having to necessarily read the articles themselves.

To write a review properly, you first need to read the article twice, at the very least. The assignment begins even before you begin to write.

Things to Consider Before Reading:

 Initial assumptions based on the title

 Assumptions based on the sub-titles

 Read the abstract. Initial thoughts?

Look over the References. Have you read any of the sources? Should you? What do they indicate?

 Search the Web for the author of the article. Is the author established in his/her field?

Does the author speak with authority?

Things to consider: on your First Read

 The article’s audience

 The author’s purpose in writing

 The author’s thesis or main argument

Second Reading Exercise. Things to consider:

 What information is fact? What information is opinion?

 What opinions are supported? How well are they supported?

 Is there a gap in information? In logic?

 Can you find instances of bias?

 Is the author successfully persuasive?

The Writing Process

Outline. Write out your main argument in full. Your thesis should be the argument you are making about the article, typically an answer as to whether or not the article is successful at what it sets out to accomplish and whether the article is valuable. The thesis should be a succinct summation of your opinion on the article.

The review begins with a complete citation of the article at the top of the page in whatever style is stipulated by an instructor.

The first paragraph should contain:

 A thesis statement. An opinion about the article is backed up with evidence and well-reasoned analysis.

 The author of the article’s purpose in writing

 Background information on the author

 A brief overview of other, relevant scholarship

The body of the review should contain:

 Points of argument to support your thesis

 A logical development of ideas

 quotes and paraphrases from the article as pieces of evidence

The final paragraph should contain:

 A restatement of your thesis

 A summary of your review

Discuss how city and county residents are taxed for sport venues and whether public funding should be used for sport and entertainment venues.

Business of Sport Discussion

Discuss how city and county residents are taxed for sport venues and whether public funding should be used for sport and entertainment venues (10 points).

Research and give one example of how public funding has been used to build a stadium (5 points).

Known as one of the world’s most spectacular venues, the Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta, Georgia is the first LEED Platinum certified professional sports stadium in North America. The stadium is home to the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United FC, and the Chick-fil-A-Kickoff Game. The construction for the stadium broke ground in 2014 and opened to the public in August 2017.

Building Mercedes Benz Stadium was a controversial decision during the beginning of the proposal process in 2010. In fact, Atlanta already had a stadium downtown—the Georgia Dome—that debuted in 1992 at a cost of $214 million ($398.8 million today) and was the second largest covered stadium in the world (by capacity) at the time (Associated Press 2017). The Georgia Dome held historic events, such as the 1996 Summer Olympics, NCAA men’s final four, and hundreds of professional and amateur sporting events throughout the years. The Georgia Dome had not even reached its 20th birthday by the time discussions started on knocking down the facility and building a new one.

The Georgia Dome was demolished in 2017, and 95 percent of the stadium was recycled and reused. The lot where the Georgia Dome once stood is now used as a green space known as the Home Depot backyard, an 11-acre greenspace next to the Mercedes Benz stadium used for parking and tailgating as well as events and programming on nongame days. The new stadium was able to get platinum LEED certified recognition because

it saves 29 percent in energy usage in comparison to other stadiums,

rainwater is used for landscape irrigation,

it has 4,000 solar panels,

LED lighting throughout the facility reduces energy usage by as much as 60 percent, and

it has edible landscaping (Mercedes Benz Stadium 2020).

Arthur Blank has vowed to rehabilitate the west side of Atlanta by using Mercedes Benz Stadium as the fulcrum that will help to spread success throughout Atlanta and the surrounding communities. In fact, he created a plan called Westside Works, which is a long-term neighborhood program that is focused on creating employment opportunities and job training for residents of the west side community where Mercedes Benz Stadium is located. One of the programs within Westside Works is a six-week culinary academy that trains chefs and is a pipeline to employment inside Levy Restaurant venues in metro Atlanta, including Mercedes Benz Stadium (Solomon 2019). Since construction of the stadium was completed, Mercedes Benz Stadium has hosted many events including a Super Bowl in 2019 and the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament in 2020, and has made the list of possible venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both Mercedes Benz Stadium and the Georgia Dome used public funding through taxpayer dollars to secure the construction of the stadium, with both promoters saying that stadium construction in that area would help the community.

Discuss how city and county residents are taxed for sport venues and whether public funding should be used for sport and entertainment venues (10 points).

Research and give one example of how public funding has been used to build a stadium (5 points).
