Calvinism and Arminianism are two major competing theologies as it relates to understanding the doctrine of salvation. Calvinistic theology describes the theological views of John Calvin and is often synonymous with Calvinism and the reformed faith. Arminian theology describes the theological views of Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609). Due to the sincere and deeply held beliefs of the adherents to these theologies along with their prevalence, it is important that students understand what they are, what makes them unique, and the doctrinal positions each group affirms.

First Position Paper (150 pts): Choose to write about an issue found in the first half of the course, dealing with issues such as revelation, authority, scripture, God, Trinity, creation, humanity, sin, and Jesus Christ. In arguing for your position, you need to contrast your position with at least one alternative position on the issue you discuss. Although this is a theology paper, you should talk about the relevance of scripture for the subject matter. You don’t need to do additional research for the paper (beyond the textbook), though you may do so if you want. Write an essay of 400 to 500 words in response. Your essay must engage and interact with course Learn materials (textbooks and presentations) and document such with appropriate source citations.

[NB: for quizzes, use parenthetical citations rather than footnotes – author’s last name and page number for textbooks and author’s last name and brief title for presentations, along with a “Works Cited” list at the end of your essay.] Identify in your essay which question you are answering. The question and the “Works Cited” list do not figure into the required word count.

Evaluative Criteria:

Hence, two things are important:

1. Be sure that you have done all the reading and watched all the course videos for the first four modules.
2. Pay attention to the BIG themes discussed in your reading and presented in the videos. A few big themes keep coming through in the reading and watching; that is what the quiz covers.

Just be sure you’ve done the reading, watched the videos, and have a good grasp of the major themes, and you’ll be fine.
