Marketing Plan: Choose a “new” product or service in an existing product/service category for your business.

Individual Project: 30% – Designing a Marketing Plan
Designing a Marketing Plan
The objective of this project is to provide you with experience in applying the concepts and methods of
marketing to a real-world marketing opportunity in a small / medium business. The project is done
individually. A comprehensive marketing plan for a new product or service of the individual choice will be
selected. It will involve the following:
Choose a “new” product or service in an existing product/service category for your business.
You are required to do the following to complete the project:
o Create a marketing plan following the outline provided at the beginning of the class. Description of the
existing situation including target market (highlighting key customer learnings), company objectives and
existing competitors in the marketplace.
o Identify the customers for the specific product or service and describe these consumers in relevant
ways (demographics, lifestyles, knowledge of product, etc.). Explain why the new product/service would
be appropriate for your target market. This step will involve market research (one-on-one interviewing of
potential users of the product or service as well as a follow-up survey of a larger sample of potential
users). Evidence of market research is critical for this project. There will be a 20 percent deduction of
your final grade.
o Outline a marketing strategy for the new product/service. This discussion should include a description
of the product/service and its benefits, pricing and positioning strategy, advertising and promotional plans,
as well as a consideration of distribution channel(s).
o Final written report (your marketing plan), which consists of your recommendations on the marketing
analysis and 4Ps (marketing mix)
Your document should be a maximum of 20 typed pages of content with 12-point font(Times New
Roman), and should be accompanied by a Works cited page.

What is the impact of the two different cultures on the dimension and how does it compare across the countries as a result?

What is a comparative paper?

Two distinct things:

Retirement planning in the U.S. and another country

Health care service in the U.S. and another country

Long-term care service in the U.S. and another country

Analyze similarities and differences

Discuss implications of these

Use research to support ideas

You are an expert informing non-experts

  • Sociological Aspects of Aging — focus on older adults
  • Make clear transition from one idea to next
  • Useful comparison transition words can be found on this website: https://www.sbcc.edu/clrc/files/wl/downloads/WritingaCompareContrastEssay.pdf
  • Headings can help direct your reader’s focus from one part of the paper to the next.
  • Adhere to the page limits (minimum 4 – maximum 6 pages + references)

Your own ideas should be informed and supported by cited research

Include relevant current political and social contexts (e.g. If writing about health care, include Affordable Care Act in the U.S.)

Use credible sources found in library databases, or government/non-profit websites (e.g. www.medicare.gov; www.dor.kaiser.org;  www.commonwealthfund.org; www.rrf.org)

Avoid use of Wikipedia, and sites with .net or .com

Creating an outline

  • Two methods of organization:
    • Point by point – organized by dimension
    • Block – organized by country
  • Include ample detail so that your professor/TA can provide feedback
  • Include references

The introduction

  • Begin with a sentence that creates interest (e.g. interesting fact, compelling quotation, question for the reader to ponder)
  • State what you will be comparing and why it is important
  • Provide general background information on each country (e.g. whether the country is developed, description of its 65+ population) and dimension (e.g. a definition of the dimension)
  • State the focus of your paper (e.g. similarities, differences, both) in a clear thesis statement

Body of the paper

  • Chose a few aspects of the dimension that stand out for your focus
  • Describe them in a way that will help non-experts understand them
  • Compare the two countries on these aspects of the dimension, considering the questions in the paper guidelines:
    • How are the systems alike and/or different?
    • What is the impact of the two different cultures on the dimension and how does it compare across the countries as a result?
    • What are the strengths and weaknesses of each system?

The conclusion

  • Briefly summarize the ideas you presented in the paper
  • Synthesize the ideas by considering the questions from the paper guidelines:
    • If one country’s system were adopted in the other country, how would older adults be impacted?
    • Who would be most impacted and why?
    • How does the dimension benefit from interdisciplinary perspectives?
  • Leave the reader with a compelling thought to think about for future research or action

Violating norms report:Describe briefly how this norm helps you determine how to act in a social setting.

Concept Ideas: Culture, Norm Violation, Sanctions, Folkways, Mores, Deviance

Instructions:

This assignment asks you to violate a norm and write a report about the experience. The objective of the research is to determine the extent to which norms influence behavior and how norm violation is perceived in our society. Thus, you will pay particular attention to the reactions of both YOURSELF and OTHERS who are part of the situation.

This assignment involves core concepts that you find in Chapter 3, 4, 5, and 7.  Make sure that you have reviewed these chapters before writing your final report.

Before you begin the assignment, be certain you study the following guidelines:

  1. Select a norm common in our society. Be sure it is a folkway and not a more.
  2. BEFORE you enter the field to do your research, be certain you filled out parts 1 and 2 of the write-up (see the format outlined below). This will help to ensure that you have a firm grasp of your hypothesis in advance.
  3. BREAK the norm in a social setting, OBSERVE the reactions of others and yourself, and RECORD as quickly as possible those reactions.
  4. Vary the conditions. Do your experiments at least twice under different conditions (e.g. place, time, audience).
  5. Violate the norm in a social setting. It does not count if you wear your clothes backwards in your closet.
  6. Reactions. Pay attention to both verbal and nonverbal reactions.

  1. DO NOT:
  2. Break any law or cause anyone else to break the law.
  3. Cause harm to yourself or anyone (including animals) else.
  4. Do anything that is illegal or morally questionable, or that could bring negative sanctions to you, the sociology department, the university, or your instructor.

The following format is to be followed as you write up this exercise.  Please note that this is a skeletal outline and is intended to help you decide what information to include in your report.  Be sure to cover all these points, but do not feel that you are limited to them. Elaborate and be creative where you can.  Incorporate as much as you can from what you have learned about sociology in everyday settings.

This report should be 4-6 pages in length, typewritten and double space.  Please take note of my policies regarding written assignments (see syllabus).

Format to use:

  1. Statement of the Problem (5 points)

  1. Define the norm that you will violate.
  2. Describe briefly how this norm helps you determine how to act in a social setting. That is, what is the function of the norm for society in general?
  3. Describe what you will do to violate the norm.

  1. Hypothesis (5 points)

  1. Describe the range of possible reactions others will have toward the violation of this norm.
  2. What do you predict the most common reaction to be, and why?

  1. Describe the setting (5 points)

  1. Physical –      where did the norm violation take place?
  2. Social –           how many and what types of people were observing?

  1. Describe the incident: tell what happened (10 points)

  1. Summary and Interpretation (25 points). Bulk of points (15 points) is based on your answers to part E and F of this section.

  1. How did you feel as you were violating the norm?
  2. Why did you feel the way you did?
  3. Did people react the way you expected?  Explain.
  4. Did you encounter any difficulties carrying out your assignment?
  5. Which deviance theory do you think can best explain the public’s reactions to your norm violation? Explain why.
  6. What, if anything, did you learn about how norms exercise social control? How is deviance perceived in society? Relate your findings to what we have discussed and what you have read in Chapters 3,4, 5, and 7. APPLY AT LEAST TWO sociological concepts.

Types of Fraud:How each type of fraud could impact the general public.

Watch the assignment short video clips on different types of fraud and write a summary of how each type of fraud could impact the general public.

The paper must be one page and formatted according to APA guidelines.

Assignment 1 – Report (70%)

Your role is to act as a Business Intelligence consultant for a business organisation* of your own choice (e.g. university, banking, health, retail or airline as a business). You could invent a case study of an organisation; however, we suggest you find a case study of an existing organisation. Your chosen organisation could already have a BI solution that is out of date or may not have a BI solution as yet, but has a substantial number of data stores. You should research and critically evaluate methodologies, theories, processes, strategies and technologies in order to produce a feasible design of a Business Intelligence solution for your case study organisation. In your report you should present evidence of BI aspects you have considered for the organisation.

The assignment is an Individual report. The word count should not exceed 3000 words.

As a suggestion, your assignment should address the following:

An introduction and background to the case study organisation. (200 words)

A Literature Review (1000 words) in order to evidence and evaluate the most suitable strategy and technology for the organisation.

  • Critically appraise and outline the current issues, trends and practices in Business Intelligence (BI) applicable for your organisation, using literature to support your discussion.
  • Discuss and evaluate the role of data and data sources for your organisation
  • Outline the major changes you would anticipate in your organisation when implementing your BI solution.
  • What aspects of the organisational structure would your BI solution impact upon, and how?
  • Identify the internal and external drivers and challenges for your chosen BI implementation.

Methodology (1000 words)

  • Evaluate the BI project lifecycle and suitable methodology and approaches for your BI strategy
  • Identify the model(s) used and evaluate their effectiveness in order to produce an appropriate BI design solution for your case study organisation.

Data Analysis and Visualization (300 words)

  • Research into appropriate Data Analysis approach and present Visualisation model (s) on a sample dataset (e.g. you can use open source data) to support your arguments which you have presented in the literature review.

Conclusion (500)

  • Alongside the report conclusion, provide THREE key recommendations for the chosen organisation. Suggest solutions for your recommendations that would be part of a BI implementation solution.

Why can’t you just make judgments about future cash flows based purely on the size of the cash flows?

FINC 5000

Homework Assignment for Week 2:

Chapter 4:

For Week 2, please turn in the answers to the following questions:

Why is it necessary to know about time value of money concepts? Why can’t you just make judgments about future cash flows based purely on the size of the cash flows?

Cochrane Associate’s net sales last year were $525 million. If sales grow at 7.5% per year, how large (in millions) will they be 8 years later?

Your bank offers a savings account that pays 3.5% interest, compounded annually. How much will $500 invested today be worth at the end of 25 years?

Suppose a Google.com bond will pay $4,500 ten years from now. If the going interest rate on safe 10-year bonds is 4.25%, how much is the bond worth today?

What’s the future value of $1,500 after 5 years if the appropriate interest rate is 6%, compounded semiannually?

Your friend offers to pay you an annuity of $2,500 at the end of each year for 3 years in return for cash today. You could earn 5.5% on your money in other investments with equal risk. What is the most you should pay for the annuity?

Because your mother is about to retire, she wants to buy an annuity that will provide her with $75,000 of income a year for 20 years, with the first payment coming immediately. The going rate on such annuities is 5.25%. How much would it cost her to buy the annuity today?

Suppose you borrowed $12,000 at a rate of 9.0% and must repay it in 4 equal installments at the end of each of the next 4 years. How large would your payments be?

You are considering investing in a bank account that pays a nominal annual rate of 7%, compounded monthly. If you invest $3,000 at the end of each month, how many months will it take for your account to grow to $150,000?

An uncle of yours who is about to retire wants to sell some of his stock and buy an annuity that will provide him with income of $50,000 per year for 30 years, beginning a year from today. The going rate on such annuities is 7.25%. How much would it cost him to buy such an annuity today?

You want to open a sushi bar 3 years from now, and you plan to save $7,000 per year, beginning immediately. You will make 3 deposits in an account that pays 5.2% interest. Under these assumptions, how much will you have 3 years from today?

Freedman Flowers’ stock has a 50% chance of producing a 25% return, a 30% chance of producing a 10% return, and a 20% chance of producing a −28% return. What is the firm’s expected rate of return?

Chapter 6:

Define the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM).

Define “beta” as it applies to common stocks.

Ivan Knobel holds a well-diversified portfolio that has an expected return of 11.0% and a beta of 1.20. He is in the process of buying 1,000 shares of Syngine Corp at $10 a share and adding it to his portfolio. Syngine has an expected return of 13.0% and a beta of 1.50. The total value of Ivan’s current portfolio is $90,000. What will the expected return and beta on the portfolio be after the purchase of the Syngine stock?

Instructions: The Research Essay is quite a different assessment to the Exercise. You are expected to go into the topic in some depth and write a well-considered, well-structured essay.  I will assess you on the quality of your writing in English and your essay structure, as well as the content.

Style:  You will be used to using the APA style guide, but it does not lend itself to writing on legal topics, which is what you must do in this research essay.  For this research essay, you need to comply with the New Zealand Law Style Guide.  A link to that guide is provided on this page.  It is quite intuitive and has a rule for pretty much every citation.  If you get stuck, get in touch with me for help.
