Which type of policy might a doctor who has been in practice for 20 years at three different organizations prefer? Why?

In this assignment, you will consider liability in the context of liability insurance. To get started, go online and follow these steps to navigate to an article on malpractice insurance:

Go to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (Links to an external site.)
In the dropdown menu to the left of the Search window, select PMC.
Enter the following article number into the Search window:
PMC2793838
Click the Search button. In the results, look for a link titled “Malpractice Insurance: What You Need to Know.”
Read through the article, and then write a response to each of the following questions:

After reviewing the article regarding physician’s liability insurance, describe how claims-made and occurrence-based policies differ. Which type of policy might a doctor who has been in practice for 20 years at three different organizations prefer? Why?
Why might a “consent to settle” clause be a good thing for a doctor (or other profession) to agree to in an insurance liability contract? What might be bad about this clause?
What is your opinion about caps on medical malpractice liability awards? (The article mentions that some states cap these awards, making the insurance for doctors practicing in those states cheaper than for doctors in other states.) Would you prefer going to a doctor where caps exist, or where they do not exist? Why?
Your response should be one to two paragraphs in length.

What role has ethnic nationalism played in sparking or intensifying major conflicts of the past 150 years? Compare and contrast at least two nationalist movements from across this period.

Description: Goal: To demonstrate an awareness of the significance of religion, culture and/or politics in shaping nationalist movements; and communicating this effectively by conducting research, interpretation and analysis of primary and secondary sources..
Format: Choose one of the topics listed below.
In responding to the chosen topic, the essay should combine knowledge of course concepts/themes with in-depth research of 2-3 nationalist movements (or key periods within these movements).
The essay must make extensive use of primary and secondary (academic) sources. The essay may include visual materials (e.g. images, maps) but this is not compulsory.
The essay must be written using appropriate academic language and formatting, and must include references and a bibliography. The referencing style used should be Harvard or Chicago 16A (Footnotes). Footnotes and bibliography will not be included in the word count.

Criteria:

• Demonstration of an ability to conduct research, interpretation and analysis of primary and secondary sources (12 marks).

• Demonstration of an ability to communicate effectively about the history of nationalism (12 marks). • Originality (8 marks).

• Appropriate referencing and presentation (8 marks).

Topics (choose one only):
1. What role has ethnic nationalism played in sparking or intensifying major conflicts of the past 150 years? Compare and contrast at least two nationalist movements from across this period.

2. What relationships exist between colonialism/decolonization, and nationalist movements? Discuss, using one imperial power (e.g. Britain, France, Spain, Germany, etc.) and at least two of its formerly colonized nations.

3. Anthony D. Smith argues that nationalism is a dangerous (and often violent) concept, but Michael Billig suggests instead that nationalism is ‘banal’ and part of everyday life. Discuss, using one focal ‘case study’ nation (e.g. Australia, United States, Germany, Japan, etc.) to support your argument.

4. Using Australia or New Zealand as a focal ‘case study’ nation, consider the history of the indigenous rights movement of that country. To what extent could we argue that this movement is another kind of nationalist movement?

5. Popular culture is a common outlet (or forum) for expressions of national identity and nationalist ideology. Using one key aspect (e.g. sport, literature, art, film, music), compare and contrast the ways 2-3 nations have displayed a sense of national identity through popular culture since the 1950s.

Tips: In researching and writing this essay, you should:
• Pay close attention to the parameters of the essay topic. Each asks you to form an argument or thesis, and prompts you to demonstrate or support this using specific examples. It may be necessary for you to further narrow the scope of the topic, so think carefully about: o Time frames (if the topic does not prompt you to take a specific chronological scope, what time period are you going to focus on? Are you going to look at one key era, or compare examples from the early, mid and late 20th century?) o Geography (If the topic does not prompt you to take a specific geographical focus, are you going to hone in on a specific region, e.g. South East Asia, the Balkans, the Middle East? Or will it be more effective to compare examples from different regions?) o Key events or outlets of nationalism (if the topic does not prompt you to look at a specific outlet of nationalist energy e.g. war, how are you going to discuss the nationalist movement(s)? Will you compare political parties, periods of violence/protest, independence campaigns, particularly rich eras of cultural nationalism, etc.?)

• Demonstrate your understanding of course concepts and themes by making use of the materials in the set readings, the recommended additional readings/resources available on Black Board, and the additional recommended resources listed below.
• Demonstrate your ability to conduct extensive and original research by seeking out additional primary and secondary sources. A detailed guide (including suggestions of resource databases) is provided on Black Board (under Learning Materials > Assessment Tips).
• Your essay should be written in a formal academic manner. It is an essay, not a report. It should have: a clear introduction paragraph, an appropriate number of body paragraphs (each with a clear theme or idea that contributes to your overall topic/argument), a concise conclusion paragraph, and a bibliography/list of sources. A detailed guide to researching,
writing and editing a history essay is provided on Black Board (under Learning Materials > Assessment Tips).

Recommended additional readings:
Please note: Each week a list of additional recommended readings is also uploaded to Blackboard; these readings are more specific to the week’s topic/theme, and may be helpful in writing your essay. The suggestions below are more general and may apply across multiple weeks/themes.

How one phenomenon associated with globalization has most strongly affected your company, with respect to the services they offer, and the way they do business.

During this Session-long project, you will analyze a logistics firm such as UPS, FedEx, Maersk Line (ocean shipping), DHL Aviation, Landstar System (trucking), CSC (railroad), or Kinder Morgan (pipelines). Almost every company uses logistics in some way, but in a logistics course, companies that specialize in it are more useful as case studies.

Please select a publicly traded, for-profit corporation. Such organizations are required to publish annual reports, and make other information available to the general public. They are also more likely to have a strong presence on the Web.

Please do not select a company whose main activity is transporting passengers, such as United Airlines or Greyhound Corp. Owing to the high value and unique requirements of their “cargo,” transportation companies are different in many ways from other logistics firms. Further, do not select a company whose primary activity is the movement of information, rather than goods. Telecoms and online services are also in a world of their own.

For this course in global logistics, two additional restrictions are imposed. The company you choose must be active in international logistics, and not merely logistics within one country. (It need not be an American company; in the short list above, for example, Maersk Line is Danish, and DHL is German.) Further, the company must have been around for at least 50 years. That’s because some of the analyses involve the company’s responses to globalization, a relatively recent phenomenon.

If possible, choose a company with which you have some experience, either as a customer, employee, or the friend or relative of an employee. Further – and this is important — you should read all four SLP assignments in advance, and choose a company for which you can find the required information.

SLP1 Assignment:

This assignment has two parts. Please respond to both of them.

Part 1: Please give a brief, yet comprehensive description of the company you’ve selected. Your essay should include the following information (not necessarily in this order):

The industry segment to which it belongs.
The overall condition (size, strength, trends) of the segment.
The company’s position within the segment; dominant, competitive, or bit player?
The services provided by the company.
The company’s core technologies
Its position and reputation in the wider community
Its financial position; profitable, unprofitable, indebted, self-financing, etc.
Its trajectory; expanding, contracting, struggling, looking for a buyer, etc.
Its relevant history. Is it new, well-established, recently spun off, a recent IPO?

A valuable sources of information about any publicly-traded company is its annual report, available online from The Public Register (Bay Tact, 2014). Another service, which offers overviews and analyses of industries and industry segments, is the International Business Information Service, or IBIS (2015). Anyone studying any company should begin by consulting these two sources.

Part 2: Using the Background Info on globalization, plus information gleaned from your company-specific sources, please discuss one of the following:

(1) How one phenomenon associated with globalization has most strongly affected your company, with respect to the services they offer, and the way they do business.

(2) The biggest effect your company, and those like it, have had on the process of globalization.

Explain strategies for educating parents on their child’s disorder and reducing any concerns/fears .

Case Study 2

Jacob is a 1.5 week old brought in by his distressed mother. While changing his diaper last night, she noted that his penis was edematous and erythematous. He has been crying and fussy. Per mom, no other complaints. He’s been breastfeeding every 1-2 hours without any issues.

PE: Stable VS and growth patterns. Essentially a normal examination with the exception of a slightly erythematous and edematous glans penis with retracted prepuce.

Post an analysis of your assigned case by responding to the following:
•What additional questions will you ask?
•Has the case addressed the LOCATES mnemonic? If not, what else do you need to ask? What additional history will you need? (Think FMH, allergies, meds and so forth, that might be pertinent in arriving to your differential diagnoses).
•What additional examinations or diagnostic tests, if any will you conduct?
•What are your differential diagnoses? What historical and physical exam features support your rationales? Provide at least 3 differentials.
•What is your most likely diagnosis and why?
•How will you treat this child?
•Provide medication treatment and symptomatic care.
•Provide correct medication dosage. Use the knowledge you learned from this week’s and previous weeks’ readings as well as what you have learned from pharmacology to help you with this area.
•Patient Education, Health Promotion & Anticipatory guidance:
•Explain strategies for educating parents on their child’s disorder and reducing any concerns/fears presented in the case study.
•Include any socio-cultural barriers that might impact the treatment and management plans.
•Health Promotion:
•What immunizations should this child have had?
•Based on the child’s age, when is the next well visit?
•At the next well visit, what are the next set of immunizations?
•What additional anticipatory guidance should be provided today?

Primary Diagnosis Paraphimosis then please explain why you think this should be it with reference and then come up with 3 differential diagnosis and supporting documentation of why should not be each of those 3. Please make sure that all questions from instructions are answered.

Compare mediation to the negotiation process and arbitration to the litigation process to show how they are viable methods to resolve conflicts in the workplace.

This is the Outline portion of the term paper only. The topic you will prepare the outline for is: Comparing mediation to arbitration as viable methods to resolve conflicts in the workplace.

Written Assignment: Term Paper Outline
The product of this assignment is an expanded proposal, including information on the references you are using. The proposal will help to:
• finalize the topic of my term paper.
• organize the presentation of the material.
• provide the basis for discussion.
The outline you submit now should follow the same organization as the final paper for this project. You will find a description of the information to include in your outline in the section below
You should include the following in the outline:
Title:
A concise statement describing your subject. The subject is: Comparing mediation to arbitration as viable methods to resolve conflicts in the workplace.
Introduction:
Provide the introductory section of your paper. In this section, state the purpose of the paper in succinct declarative sentences.
Procedures:
Outline the remaining sections of your paper. What concepts from the course are applicable in each section? You must provide a sufficient description of each section so that I understand why the concepts cited are relevant.
Include a preliminary list of the references you will be using. For books, indicate which sections/chapters of the texts you will cite. Also be sure to include references which you have located through a library and/or Internet search
The outline should be no more than 2 pages in length.
Term Paper Project Description for the purpose of developing the outline.

Topic: Comparing mediation to arbitration as viable methods to resolve conflicts in the workplace.
Below is a brief description of some ideas as to what you may want to include. Please feel free to include anything that you feel would be pertinent and that could add substance to the outline and eventually my paper. The end paper will need to be 8-10 pages in length and the outline should reflect that. You should list references/resources that discuss the following:
• There should be an introduction section.
• The history of mediation and arbitration as forms of alternative dispute resolution and how it came to be what it is today.
• How has mediation and arbitration expanded throughout the years?
• Compare mediation to the negotiation process and arbitration to the litigation process to show how they are viable methods to resolve conflicts in the workplace.
• Talk about how there are also many questions that can be asked when it comes to mediation and arbitration. For example, are we able to reach a solid, lasting conclusion? If there is no legally binding result are these conclusions really being followed? I would discuss examples of each of these and any other relevant information.
• Include references that include one or two relevant cases to support the topic.

In what situations can exchange theory, as summarized above, be applied? Describe 2 situations in “rational individuals…calculate the consequences of their actions before taking them.”

Exchange Theory/Rational Choice

The textbook notes that the forerunner of exchange theory, George Homans, “maintains that (in everyday interaction) individuals will act to secure rewards and avoid punishment. Social relationships are seen as exchange relationships in the sense that rewards, such a approval or recognition, are attendant on certain behaviors. When these behaviors are rewarded, an individual is likely to repeat them in similar situations. If these behaviors elicit negative reactions, then they are not likely to be repeated. This leads to a view of human behavior in terms of costs and benefits of rational individuals who can calculate the consequences of their actions before taking them. (Farganis, 2014, p. 231)

ANSWER:

  • In what situations can exchange theory, as summarized above, be applied? Describe 2 situations in “rational individuals…calculate the consequences of their actions before taking them.”
  • What types of situations or interactions are too complicated for exchange theory principles to be useful/applied?
  • Can you remember an exchange you had that did not involve weighing out “rationally”–the costs/benefits of your behaviors or responses? Please elaborate.
  • Remember to use in-text citations and indicate page# and references at the end of your postings in ASA style.
