As you read, either take notes, write short summaries (see Textbook, pp. 240-241), or create/use a chart (see Textbook pp. 238-239 or the Synthesis Matrix section of the optional video) to help you organize your thoughts as you search for connections between these readings.
  3. Using what you learned about synthesis from the instruction and assigned readings, write a short paragraph that identifies and discusses the key connections between these selected readings and how they come together to reinforce, build on, complicate, and/or raise new ideas and questions about the role of social media.
  4. Are there any assumptions, gaps, or new research questions that arise when reading these essays together and comparing them them in this way? Explain your thinking about what possibilities you see through this synthesis word.

Do you agree with Gamson’s characterization or not? Why or why not?

Discussion

Joshua Gamson argues that celebrity culture today is quite different than celebrity culture in the past. Whereas in previous times, celebrities were “a class of people perceived as extraordinary and treated to extraordinary lives,” today, Gamson argues, celebrity revolves around a fascination with the ordinary. Detail three ways in which “celebrity culture” celebrates “the ordinary” today (you may use examples from Gamson or contemporary examples that are not in the reading). Finally, do you agree with Gamson’s characterization or not? Why or why not?

Express the problem or issue, using the guidelines explained in this Chapter 7. Investigate, as necessary, and produce five (5) ideas to solve or resolve. State which of your ideas you believe is best, and briefly explain why.

INT 322 Critical thinking and problem solving activity

First, express the problem or issue, using the guidelines explained in this Chapter 7.

Then investigate, as necessary, and produce five (5) ideas to solve or resolve.

Finally, state which of your ideas you believe is best, and briefly explain why.

In recent years the idea of monetary profit has become controversial. Some people maintain that achieving financial success implies that one has taken advantage of others. (This notion was reinforced by President Obama’s July 13, 2012, remark: “If you’ve got a business–you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen” meaning the roads, sidewalks, and other supportive infrastructure that supports the business). This thinking leads many to conclude that financial profit should be heavily taxed. But others claim that such thinking is wrong. In their view, financially successful people should be appreciated because they create jobs and wealth for others. For that very reason, they argue, successful people should be taxed no more highly than others. Research this issue and decide which position is most reasonable.
