Explain how knowledge related to social psychology and personality will assist in better understanding and assessing individual, group, or societal behavior.

Writing Question

The purpose of this assignment is to apply information you have learned related to social psychology and personality when assessing individual, group, and societal behavior to gain a deeper understanding of human behavior and thinking. This will assist in being better equipped to interact with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and who have differing belief systems.

Using the attached template, write a 500-750-word paper addressing the following prompts:

  1. Explain how knowledge related to social psychology and personality will assist in better understanding and assessing individual, group, or societal behavior. Consider topics such as attributions, stereotypes, competition and cooperation, social facilitation, social loafing, conformity, obedience, social norms, and personality traits such as introversion, agreeableness, and temperament. Provide specific examples that illustrate these concepts.
  2. What Christian worldview principles could be used to improve interactions between individuals from diverse backgrounds? Use the “Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work” in the Topic 6 Resources to further develop your response.
  3. How will this knowledge better equip you when interacting with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds or belief systems? Apply terms from social psychology and personality in your response.

Cite your textbook, the “Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work,” as well as a minimum of two scholarly sources. Scholarly sources include in-class materials and articles located in the GCU Library. Review the GCU library websites located in the Class Resources for further assistance. Websites, such as the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, may be used. Cite information summarized from the sources within the paper (in-text citations) and include a full APA reference list for sources cited.

Week 3 Primary and Secondary Sources Assessment Directions and Rubric

This Assessment is part of the Assignments category, which is worth 15% of your overall grade.

Deadline

Due by the end of Week 3 at 11:59 pm, ET.

Completing this Assessment will help you to meet the following outcome:

Course Outcome

  • Analyze, interpret, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically integrate and cite primary and secondary sources into academic documents.

Goal: To successfully classify and discuss primary and secondary resources, comparing and contrasting their differences to analyze suitability for research projects.

Directions

For this assessment, you will be writing a mini-essay looking at two resources. The first resource is an interview with Leonard Nimoy, recorded live on CNN. The second resource is a news article talking about Nimoy’s interview after his passing. Both resources can be found in our Week 3 module.

To get started, review both resources carefully. You may want to take notes on things you noticed or what you took away from the source. Determine which source is the primary one and which source is considered secondary.

Once you have reviewed both sources, you are ready to start your essay. Your paper should consist of three paragraphs:

  1. Paragraph one should cover the primary resource. Identify which one is the primary resource and explain why.  Infer and describe the main idea and purpose of this resource.
  2. Paragraph two should cover the secondary resource. Identify which one is the secondary resource and explain why. Infer and describe the main idea and purpose of this resource.

In your third and final paragraph, consider some of the differences between the two sources. Compare the two sources and determine what may have been missing in one over the other. While looking at the differences, analyze which source type you think would be more useful for a research project such as your Portfolio Project. Recommend which source you would choose for a project. Justify your recommendation with examples.

What caused this event to happen? What were the effects of this event on the author, their environment, family, community, culture, nation, world, etc.? Does the author come to any conclusions or resolutions?

Article Writing Question

A causal analysis analyzes the causes and/or effects of an event, decision, or experience. What caused this event to happen? What were the effects of this event on the author, their environment, family, community, culture, nation, world, etc.? Does the author come to any conclusions or resolutions?

Discuss the visual source’s use of rhetorical appeals, devices, strategies, and the optional argument style. Don’t forget about formal elements like metaphor, personification, irony, symbolism, etc. that you think are relevant.

Writing Question

Sources: Two: one will be your visual source, the other will be the company/ brand/ organization website.

Purpose: Communication exists in mediums outside of the written word. Just like a written text, a visual text communicates meaning on a deeper level beyond merely the literal. For example, photographs, print advertisements, posters, paintings, and movies all convey messages.

Audience: Your audience for this assignment is your instructor and your classmates. Therefore, your tone should be academic and more formal than if you were speaking to a friend. However, when writing the analysis, you need to focus on the Target Audience for that particular visual prompt.

Visual Source Parameters: Click on the links on the “Visual Source Suggestions” document to get an idea about what kinds of advertisements make good material for this assignment. Please feel free to choose one of the commercials given on the list—all of these have plenty of brand research available about them.

If you want to select your own visual source, then here are some guidelines:

  • Choose either a television commercial or music video for which you can easily find the brand/ creator mission statement and purpose as given on their website.
  • Length should be at least 1 minute long (1-3 mins is a good length. 30 seconds is too short).
  • Source must be from within the last 5 years.
  • Make sure you choose wisely with your source. You need to choose something that has enough content to sustain a 3–4-page analysis.

In your paper, you need to accomplish the following:

  • Discuss the visual source’s use of rhetorical appeals, devices, strategies, and the optional argument style. Don’t forget about formal elements like metaphor, personification, irony, symbolism, etc. that you think are relevant.
  • Analyze how the visual source effectively or ineffectively represents what the brand claims to stand for.
  • Give specific visual examples that support your claim.
  • Important things to consider: For example, Who seems to be the targeted audience? If you have chosen an advertisement, then what product or service is being advertised?

What is the thesis of the critical review? Does the thesis appear in the introduction? Does your partner present an evaluative thesis, as he or she should? Does the thesis avoid personal feeling or belief? What reasons does your partner provide in the thesis?

Peer Review

Part 1: Use the following questions to guide your review of your partner’s essay. Write your name (reviewer’s name) and your peer’s name (writer’s name) in a Google Doc/Word Doc. Your comments will help your partner gain a new perspective that will inform the reflection and revision processes.

Part 2: You should complete a self-review with the same questions.

Part 3: Compare PARTS 1 and 2. What did you notice that your peers didn’t notice and vice versa? Look at each point (1-7) for this exercise. How will you resolve each difference you notice?

Turn in all parts on BB.

Parts 1 & 2: (Provide complete-sentence responses.)

  1. What is the thesis of the critical review? Does the thesis appear in the introduction? Does your partner present an evaluative thesis, as he or she should? Does the thesis avoid personal feeling or belief? What reasons does your partner provide in the thesis? (There should be some reasons.)

Below are two example thesis statements, one is effective and another is weak.

  1. an effective, strong thesis: Although “N” site has made steps in a positive direction, such as in the new tools to interact more with other users now and to keep some data private, “N” site has not kept up with important technological advances and innovative changes to social media, such as developing a user-friendly phone app and limiting the content that floods the newsfeed; therefore, “N” site falls below average, making it a site users should avoid.
  2. an ineffective, weak thesis: “L” site has great features because people can post whatever they want to their profile, but I don’t think people should use it because it is not fun and is the most boring.

  1. Are the criteria listed one at a time in their own paragraph? What are the criteria?

  1. Comment on the criteria. Has your partner presented objective criteria? To what extent do the criteria appear to be unbiased? To what extent does your partner reveal his/her bias? (Remember NOT to rely on personal taste or preference.)

  1. Do the paragraphs discussing the criteria and evaluation begin, as they should, with the identification and definition of the given criterion? (Refer to the sample paragraph with my revisions in the previous deadline’s folder if you need clarity on what exactly this looks like.)

  1. How does the writer show the points, rather than just tell them? What are the specific examples/pieces of evidence the writer uses to support the thesis? List multiple examples.

  1. Is the review convincing? Why or why not?

  1. Offer a suggestion for how your partner can improve his/her evaluation.

Which player is the best of the 4? What information from the distributions allows you to make that determination? Which player is the worst of the 4? What information from the distributions allows you to make that determination?

Writing Question

Wordle is a popular word game that can be played on the web. Players get 6 tries to guess a 5-letter word of the day. With each guess, players can see how many letters guessed are present in the word and how many of those letters are in the correct spot.

After each game, players are provided with their statistics, which are depicted in the graphs you see below. The graphs depict frequencies of correct guesses. For example, if a player gets the word correct in 3 tries, the total in the 3 column increases by 1; similarly, if a player takes all 6 tries to get the word, the 6 column increases by 1.

Over time, then, the Wordle application tracks the number of guesses it took for a player to correctly guess the word of the day, With that information in mind, look at the 4 player distributions and answer the following questions.
Which player is the best of the 4? What information from the distributions allows you to make that determination?
Which player is the worst of the 4? What information from the distributions allows you to make that determination?
Are any of the distributions normal? Are any of them positively skewed? Negatively skewed? Which ones and how do you know?
If you were to really dig in, what descriptive statistics would you be able to calculate and report by looking at these distributions?

You may earn up to 5 points for a complete, accurate, and thoughtful response to all 4questions. You should write approximately 2 sentences per item.
