According to Pateman, what is the difference between Social Contract Theory and other theoretical strategies that justify subjugation and present it as freedom?

Pateman: Sexual Contract

Part I: Read: Carol Pateman: Chapter 3 “Contract, the Individual and Slavery” from The Sexual Contract(only pages 39-60) (you’ll also find the outlines of some of the thinkers Pateman discusses to attached for your convenience:-)

  • According to Pateman, what is the difference between Social Contract Theory and other theoretical strategies that justify subjugation and present it as freedom?
  • With the exception of Hobbes, what is the origin of political right? How is man’s right over women justified (again with the exception of Hobbes)
  • Pateman claims that in order to make their natural beings recognizable, social contract theorists smuggle social characteristics into the natural condition (or their readers supply what’s missing). What is being “smuggled” in? What is not included in Rawls’ “original position”?
  • Hobbes as opposed to the other contractarians, assumes that there is no natural mastery of male over female. Hobbes also argues that the original political right comes from the right of the mother over the child. Political rights is originally maternal and not paternal. Why isn’t this original right paternal? How is this over turned?
  • Pateman argues Hobbes’ patriarchalism is not paternal but conjugal. Please explain what she means by this. What does it have to do with Hobbes’ definition of family?
  • Why, according to Pateman, is accounting for the survival of the infants part of the general problem of contractarianism?
  • Please discuss how Locke may be seen (at first glance) to be a proto-feminist but closer examination does not bear this out. Please fully discuss the first glance view and close view of Locke’s theory.
  • What’s the basis of Rousseau’s argument that civil order depends on the right of the husband over their wives?
  • Please explain the “individual’ found in Hobbes’, Locke’s, and contemporary contractarians. What are the properties/qualities of the individual’s relation to property? To others?
  • What are the socialist and feminist arguments against the contract?

Planning process

After completing the reading assignments, provide a detailed response to the following questions: (250 words minimum per question per question APA format with correct citations/references)

Chapter 6

  1. Why is it important to include clients in the setting of goals during the planning process? What factors might prevent social workers from including their clients in the planning process?
  2. Consider the use of goal setting in treatment with clients. Describe three benefits of setting clear goals with clients. What is the connection between goals and treatment interventions?

Chapter 7

  1. Describe the difference between an immigrant and refugee. What are some of the challenges unique to this population? How can social workers demonstrate cultural humility/sensitivity as they have immigrant and refugee families in becoming acculturated to the United States. What skills are necessary?

Resources- The resources must be included in references and cited properly. Chapter 6, Planning in Generalist Practice, highlights the eight steps in the planning process. Students should have a better understanding of identifying client’s strengths, and using the concepts of performance, conditions, and standards to establish goals and objectives. This chapter stresses the importance of being culturally competent when establishing a contract with various client populations.

Chapter 7, Examples of Implementation in Generalist Practice, investigates several approaches that are commonly utilized by generalist practitioners to address issues in various practice areas. Chosen from inclusion, these practice areas reflect a broad range of practice issues and scenarios; including child maltreatment, crisis intervention, and drug abuse.

Chapter 8, Evaluation, Termination, and Follow-up in Generalist Practice, provides its readers with various techniques for measuring or evaluating effective treatment. This process is ongoing and depending on the success of the treatment process, can be altered to meet the needs of our clients. Knowledge and skills required for an effective termination process will also be discussed.

What is genre and why is it important? How does genre impact writing? What does audience matter? How do audience and genre connect? Show through examples from the readings and discuss how the genre is appropriate for the intended audience, and why you know that. Or describe how another genre might or might not have the same effect.

ANALYSIS OF WRITING CONCEPTS FINAL DRAFT

Submit a final draft of Project One to “P1 Analysis of Writing Concepts Final Draft” in USF Writes (Links to an external site.) by the deadline. This draft should represent thoughtful consideration of the feedback you’ve received and should demonstrate significant development beyond the rough draft.

Considerations for Analysis

In your analysis, go beyond summarizing to analyze andmake connections between the writing concepts and your knowledge as a writer. Use the sources or readings from our class to support your ideas with evidence – examples that illustrate your points about these key writing concepts and why it’s important for a writer to understand them.

First, you should define the concepts in your own way – what do they mean to you? Then explain the connections between concepts. How do they work together in a piece of writing, and what concepts are most often connected or which depend on the situation for writing? You might explore a concept in one of the sources/readings – like how genre connects to another concept in the commencement addresses we reviewed. Or discuss how a concept in one of the sources is different or similar to the way it is in another source. You might compare how audience is different across examples, or how the purpose of pieces of writing might be similar even if the contexts are different. You decide what connections to discuss. Make sure you thoroughly analyze the evidence you choose to support your points – make sure you use details or direct quotes from the texts to illustrate your points.

Some ideas for writing about the concepts:

  • What is genre and why is it important? How does genre impact writing? (Use evidence to support your claims about genre).
  • What does audience matter? Use examples from the readings to illustrate how a writer considers audience.
  • How do audience and genre connect? Show through examples from the readings and discuss how the genre is appropriate for the intended audience, and why you know that. Or describe how another genre might or might not have the same effect.
  • What is critical to know about the purpose for any writing? What other concepts are often connected to purpose, and can you illustrate with an example or two from the readings?
  • Why is it important to know the context in which the writing occurs?
  • What is the rhetorical situation? How is it similar and/or different than context? How does the rhetorical situation influence the writer? In what ways? Why does it matter that you consider the rhetorical situation in writing? Use examples from the readings to show how you understand each rhetorical situation and explain its importance.

You might structure your essay around ideas about the writing concepts you find most important. Discuss all the concepts but focus more on some than others, depending on what you think is more important for a writer to know.

Difference in earth scientists’ views and the American public’s view on evolution.
