ArcGIS Online Mapping and Creative Problem Solving1

This exercise is a followup to Module 12: Basics of Mapping and Spatial Analysis in ArcGIS
Online. In this problem set, we are going to create an interesting map and generate insights from the government’s open data. Please read the following rules carefully before starting:

The assignment should be completed in a WORD document and submitted as individual work through the tab titled “Problem Set 4” on Blackboard.

You may discuss the assignment with others in the class, but the work that you turn in must be your own work.

Sharing and copying any files related to the assignment will be considered plagiarism.

The assignment should be submitted electronically by the given due date.

1. Go to the NYC open data site and find and download the following files:

  • 1.1. Download the data named “COVID19 Free Meals Locations.” To download the data, click “Export” which is located next to the data title, and choose “CSV for Excel.” Open
the data and look at the data, focusing on the field (i.e., column) names and the types of data entries in each field, in order to get familiar with the data before mapping.

  • 1.2. Download the data named COVID19 Free Meal Locations DD.xlsx. This data is found under Attachments in the “About this Data” section. The file contains metadata. Open the file and look at the metadata to learn how the data in 1.1 were collected and what each data entry means.

2. Go to the Excel file you created in Problem Set 2 and find the table about juvenile investigations in New York City from 2006 and 2011. Copy the table to another Excel file and remove the rows and columns that contain the TOTAL and RANGE values from the table and save the file as a CSV file.

3. Sign in to your ArcGIS Online account and navigate the website. Click “Map” on the menu bar at the top of the screen, and then click “Open in Map Viewer Classic.

4. Add a polygon layer for the five boroughs of New York City from “Search for Layers. To do so, set your search boundary as ArcGIS Online by clicking in the order of Add Search for Layers My Content ArcGIS Online. Search for a map that visualizes NYC borough boundaries. Multiple maps will be available to add. Then, choose a map that you like; I recommend the one created by NYC DCP Mapping Portal.

5. Add a layer from the CSV file that contains the data about COVID19 free meal locations to show the locations that participated in the city’s grabandgo free meal program until September 10th, 2020. To do so, click in the order of Add Add Layer from File Choose File (then, choose the file you want to use to create a layer on the map) IMPORT LAYER.

Note: A warning sign that the file contains invalid characters or is missing more location data will show up. This is because ArcGIS Online uses latitude and longitude to specify locations but some of the records are missing in the government data. If you see the sign, click “OK.”

6. Color the symbols that represent the free meal locations by “Accessibility. Choose the colors that you like.

7. Import the CSV file that contains the data about juvenile investigations in New York City from 2006 and 2011. You can import the table in the same way that you add a layer to the map. But don’t forget to locate features by choosing “None, add as table.”

8. Join the imported table into the map. Click in the order of Analysis Summarize Data Join Features.

  • 8.1. Choose target layer: Choose the layer that sets the borough boundaries of New York City
  • 8.2. Choose layer to join to target layer: Choose the layer (i.e., table) that contains the juvenile investigation records.
  • 8.3. Select the type of join: Click “Choose the fields to match” and then choose the fields that contain borough names for both the target and join layers.
  • 8.4 Choose join operation: Choose “Join one to one” and then “First record (default)”
  • 8.5 Result layer name: Give a unique name to the added layer. For example, Juvenile Cases in NYC.
  • 8.6 Click “Run Analysis”

9. In the map you created in Question 8 by adding a new layer, change the color of polygons based on the average, maximum, or minimum number (choose one that you like) of juvenile investigations by borough.

10. Print the map with legend and save the map as a picture. The legend box, which is next to the map, may not be saved as a picture. Then, in your answer to Question 11, you must explain briefly how the polygons (i.e., boroughs) were colored.

11. Open a word document and insert the map you saved in Question 10. Answer the following questions. Don’t forget to write your full name at the top of the word document.

  • 11.1. Using your creativity, discuss any problems you see with the distribution of the COVID19 free meals locations.
  • 11.2. How do you think the city’s grabandgo free meal program can help reduce juvenile crimes during and after the pandemic?
12. Save the word document and submit it in Blackboard.

Create a theory-driven argument for how the leader you have designed would effectively run the organization. You can utilize any combination of theories and concepts you believe will help support your arguments.

Design an effective leader for a chosen organization

QUESTION
Pick an organization in an industry that you are personally interested in. Given the particularities of the organization/industry you have chosen, your job is to consider what an optimal leader would be in that context. ‘Design’ an effective leader in your chosen context, considering both the trait, skills and/or behavioral approach to leadership. Students must justify why they believe this combination is appropriate for the context. Students must use relevant theories and concepts to explain how this leader might run the organization effectively. Appropriate source material should be used to support points throughout – remember to score highly there must be strong evidence of wider reading (academic journal papers). The assignment should be structured as follows:

Part 1 (20 Marks)
Introduce your chosen organization and industry. Students should list the relevant attributes and characteristics of this context.

Part 2 (30 marks)
‘Design’ an effective leader – you must justify why these combinations of traits, skills, behaviors etc are appropriate to the context. You should draw upon relevant theories and concepts that you
have learnt from the module to support your analysis. For example, if you are discussing the personality traits that your leader would ideally have, then you could draw on the five-factor personality model to support your discussions.

Part 3 (50 marks)
Create a theory-driven argument for how the leader you have designed would effectively run the organization. You can utilize any combination of theories and concepts you believe will help support your arguments. (e.g. Theory X, Theory Y etc).

*Note you may give your assignment a project management focus if you wish to. So your effective leader design may be in relation to a specific project. Part 3 may focus on how your leader may approach running certain projects specifically.

Why did the Americans win their war of independence from Britain?

American Studies Question

Answer this question based on your own personal research. Be sure to use academically strong sources.

Question: Why did the Americans win their war of independence from Britain?

GUIDELINES:

  • Include at least three reasons – other than military victories or defeats
  • Be sure to follow course guidelines for format, footnotes, and sources.
  • Your paper should have at least 3 paragraphs – one for each of your three reasons.
  • Minimum word count: 300.
  • Chicago style footnote

Describe a scenario in which you were persuaded to do something that you did not really want to do.

Obedience and Conformity

“Conformity is going along with the crowd” (Chapter 9, pg. 310). “Like obedience, conformity has had a bad reputation among social psychologists, and this stems in part from influential early studies that depicted people doing foolish, irrational, or bad things in order to conform” (pg. 310).

Why do we conform and obey? Of course we know and our text points out that obedience can also be a good thing, a “prosocial behavior” (pg. 293-294) and that it is a necessary part of our cooperative daily living.

Your discussion post:

Describe a scenario in which you were persuaded to do something that you did not really want to do. (Of course you do not have to use any example that is too personal or makes you uncomfortable.)

For example:

  • Have you ever worn a fashion that you didn’t even like just to fit in with your peer group?
  • Have you ever pretended to agree with your friends because you feared being different?
  • After describing your scenario think about what the text says concerning the reasons we conform and obey.
  • What made you conform? Be sure to cite resources in your post.

Warning Label Design: Part 1

Your goal is to demonstrate understanding of the 4 elements associated with designing an effective warning label. These 4 elements are described on pages 542 – 544 of the class textbook (Lee, Wickens, Liu, & Boyle, 2017) as follows:

  • Signal word conveying the seriousness (e.g., Danger, Warning, or Caution)
  • Description of the hazard (e.g., Risk of fall or collision)
  • Consequences associated with the hazard (e.g., Risk of death)
  • Behavior needed to avoid the hazard (e.g., Watch for obstacles)

In this assignment a problem statement is presented. You are expected to design two versions of a warning statement to help prevent the problem from reoccurring. Use the template below, replace the red text with your own.

Extra Notes for Part 1:

  • Description of behavior to be improves: create your own version “annotated version”
    • Names not clear, looks to real, maybe don’t have access to instruction
  • Warning label design 1: Don’t create a warning for something else
    • Be specific
      • Nonsterile solution, practice use only …
    • Warning label design 2:
      • Be specific
  • It was a practice bag but were still administered to patients
  • What is the problem?
    • Not sterile
    • Does not say do not use practice purposes only
    • Title PRACTI is not specific
    • Looks legit (has NBC number and a scanner)
  • No warning label
    • Create a warning label
      • Behavior needed to avoid hazard
    • In the real world people maybe don’t have time to read a warning label
  • What behavior are you trying to improve???

Problem Statement: Company X produces practice IV solution bags for clinicians in training. These practice IV bags are never to be used on real patients as they contain fake or non-sterile solution. In 2014, several of these bags were inadvertently given to patients through a drip line leading to serious harm and one potential death. A description of this real-world problem can be found in the following link: www.protectpatientsblog.com/training_ivs_used_by_mistake_p

Consider the labeling on the sample product pictured below:

  • Is there anything about the product name that is misleading?
  • Is there any information that informs users that the product is only for training and never to be administered on people or animals?
  • What are some design interventions that may prevent use of this product on patients?

Summarize the Behavior to be improved: review the problem statement, the sample image, and summarize the behavior to be improved. Provide enough context for the reader to understand the root-cause of the problem so that your design intervention can be evaluated.

Design Activity: create 2 original versions (short version and long version) of the same warning label. Use any design tool you feel comfortable with (e.g., MS Word, MS Power Point, hand draw it and scan it).

  • Short Version: Create a short version that is constrained by a) exactly 10 words or less, b) no color/graphics, and c) includes all 4 elements of a well-designed label per pgs. 542 – 544 of the class text book (Lee, Wickens, Liu, & Boyle, 2017).
  • Long Version: Create a long version of the same label above with no constraints, consider using color, symbol(s), images, and get creative as long as all 4 elements of a well-designed label are included!

Warning Label Design

Description of Behavior to be Improved: < Replace your response with black text specifically from the problem statement indicated on pg. 2: sample statement – Some students may try to take short cuts by copying work from online reseaources. These short cuts tend to occur in situations of procrastination or low motivation leading to insufficient time to fully review instructions. This warning label is intended to alert students that they should use original designs to get full credit.>

  • Warning Label Design 1 – Short Version: Create a short version that is constrained by a) 10 words or less, b) no color/graphics, and c) includes all 4 elements of a well-designed label.
  • Warning Label Design 2 – Long Version: Create a long version of the same label above with no constraints, get creative as long as all 4 elements of a well-designed label are included!

 Part 2:

Instructions:  An example submission is provided below.

  1. Locate/paste an image of a well-designed warning label that exemplifies proper use of the 4 Human Factors best practices for a warning label (your job is to find an existing one).
  2. Clearly identify which components correspond with each of the 4 warning best practices (find a clear way to call out each element)
  3. Indicate the source of the label (e.g., a reference link)

When a new hire is terminated or quits, the employer’s investment in acquiring that employee is lost. These costs include recruiting, screening, and training the new employee. How can an employer avoid hiring the wrong person? What factors should be considered in making a hiring decision?

1 Discussion questions 2 responses and 15 multiple-choice

1. Discussion questions

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Poor hiring decisions can be very costly to employers. When a new hire is terminated or quits, the employer’s investment in acquiring that employee is lost. These costs include recruiting, screening, and training the new employee. How can an employer avoid hiring the wrong person? What factors should be considered in making a hiring decision? How would the employee selection process differ for a high-level, key position versus an entry-level, low-skill position?

2. Response to:

Ashley Holmes

There are several ways an employer can avoid hiring the wrong person. Keep in mind hiring the wrong person could be a dangerous situation if you’re not careful when making a good decision when hiring the candidate. Some ways would be to do a thorough back ground check on the potential employees prior to bringing them on with the team.

Another way would be to create a job score card which defines everything you’re looking for within the candidate. You’re basically creating a blueprint of what you’re looking for which will allow you to find a person who will succeed in the role you’re hiring for.

Also, job proposition is very important which can be time consuming because you are proposing something to perspective job candidates which is written in a way to attract candidates that you’re looking for and will possibly push away all if the people that are not fit for the position. Inviting the wrong people into your interview process will cause mis hires. Some factors to consider in making a hiring decision would be to think about the department’s needs and the candidates’ skills and experience. Think about what’s needed for the company, what are the positions needs right away 6 months from now and long term.

3. Response to

Brittnee Calkins

I don’t believe that there is a definitive method of ensuring that a new hire employee is not the “wrong person”. Sometimes an applicant may get overlooked for applicants with more experience; only for the more experienced employee to resign or be terminated within the first year. For example, I tried for 2-3 years to get a job with a specific employer and was turned down repeatedly until I was eventually hired. I ended up staying with the company for 3 years until I was pregnant and had to resign for medical reasons.

While a thorough background check can cause a liability to the employer if they hire someone with a criminal background, I still believe that it is important to check all applicants’ backgrounds during the selection process. I believe circumstances, age at the time of the crime, and charges should be taken into account when hiring someone with a criminal background. While I wouldn’t hire someone who was convicted of credit fraud to work in a bank, they could be hired as a grocery stocker. In the same respect, I wouldn’t flat out deny an applicant just because they were convicted of assault while still a teenager; I would consider the information found in the public record along with allowing them a chance to explain their criminal background check results should they be selected for an interview.
