Describe the two types of conflicting competitive pressures (localization/standardization) that a company will confront as it formulates its international/global strategy for entering a country of your choice.

Business Question

Using the case company you studied this term:

(a) Describe the two types of conflicting competitive pressures (localization/standardization) that a company will confront as it formulates its international/global strategy for entering a country of your choice.
(b) What recommendations (and strategy) would you offer to address these conflicting demands? Provide the rationale for your recommendations.

What exactly made you feel this way? What could the employee/firm have done to make you happier with this encounter? From 1 to 7, how likely would you revisit this service firm?

Service Encounter Journal 10

DIRECTIONS

We all have a number of such encounters each week, including (but not limited to) restaurants, banks, airlines, dry cleaners, doctors, dentists, libraries, photographers, tutors, travel agencies, theaters, pest control agencies, phone companies, automotive mechanics, insurance companies, attorneys, accountants, and copy centers. You are to keep a “journal” of service encounter experiences. The purpose is to make you more aware of your and other students’ sources of customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction with services.

REQUIREMENTS
You are to complete a post describing a recent service encounter (i.e., those occurring during this semester). The questions to be answered and included below. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY EMPLOYEE NAMES IN YOUR RESPONSES but be sure to otherwise completely and thoroughly answer the questions. It is recommended to write and save your responses on a separate document then paste them into your post below.

Throughout the semester you are expected to record an assortment of types of encounters from a wide variety of service industries (i.e., do not do all restaurants); about half of the journal entries should describe satisfying encounters and the other half very dissatisfying ones. The best way to complete your journal is to answer the questions immediately following a particular incident. If you try to do your entries from memory, the quality of the entries will suffer. Your inclusion of the important details of the service encounter will help you in writing your Service Encounter Paper at the end of the semester.

JOURNAL ENTRY QUESTIONS (Be sure to answer all 10 prompts)

  1. Date and Time of Encounter:
  2. Name of Firm:
  3. Type of Service (industry):
  4. What specific circumstances led to this encounter?
  5. What exactly did the firm/employee say or do?
  6. From 1 to 7, how would you rate your level of satisfaction with this encounter? (1: Extremely dissatisfied, 7: Extremely satisfied)
  7. What exactly made you feel this way?
  8. What could the employee/firm have done to make you happier with this encounter?
  9. From 1 to 7, how likely would you revisit this service firm? (1: Extremely unlikely, 7: Extremely likely)
  10. Why?

Select one of your peer’s trips. Consider the unique activities and experiences included in the trip agenda. If this trip were planned for tourists in general instead of for business leaders, identify and justify the segment of consumers you would focus your marketing efforts upon (besides people with sufficient income).

Discussion trip review

Post A

Your coworkers planned the recreational part of a trade mission to a country. They have proposed some unique options that should give the business leaders going on the trip an authentic experience with that country’s people/culture.

You have been randomly assigned to review two of these trips. The coworkers you are assigned to review are indicated under the “Peer Reviews” weblink associated with the M2 – Class Discussion (Trip to YOUR COUNTRY) HERE.

1. Review the proposed options for the first assigned trip. Communicate your six preferences (i.e., your most preferred option for (A) see, (B) experience, (C) eat, (D) make, (E) meet, and (F) transport) to that peer in the “Assignment Comments” box of their M2 – Class Discussion (Trip to YOUR COUNTRY). For clarity, use the letters. Your reviews should be submitted in a text format, not in a file.

2. Review the proposed options for the second assigned trip and communicate your six preferences to that peer.

3. Review the proposed options for the third assigned trip and communicate your six preferences to that peer.

4. Once you have completed all three reviews and communicated your preferences to each peer, submit Post A with the phrase, “Review completed.” That one phrase – that’s all. I will then know that I can go and look at your preferences under the Assignment Comments of each peer’s trip.

If you were not assigned any trips to review OR one of the trips you were assigned to review was not completed, please let me know by Monday so I can make adjustments. That will allow you to fully complete this post.

Post B

1. Give the name of YOUR COUNTRY. Provide a map that shows where it is located in the world.

2. Based on the preferences indicated by your coworkers, create a trip agenda for a seven-day trip to YOUR COUNTRY (i.e., arrival is Day Zero and departure is Day Eight). Plan your multi-city trip so it includes a national festival of some kind. Your trip should be filled with unique activities and experiences that make it a true representation of the people and culture of YOUR COUNTRY. Each of these unique activities and experiences should be accompanied by both an image and a description to introduce it to your peers. (Remember only a couple of coworkers have seen your earlier trip plan.) Presume Covid 19 is not a consideration.

Note: To earn credit for your images, the images for your trip should be visible in your post, NOT in a file. Your peers should be able to see the entire trip agenda and images without opening anything.

3. In addition to your coworker’s preferences, include a tour of a port or a trade venue as a part of the trip agenda.

4. In a second Post B, include a weblink to one video (Youtube or another source) for something interesting you have planned on your trip’s agenda.

5. Select one of your peer’s trips. Consider the unique activities and experiences included in the trip agenda. If this trip were planned for tourists in general instead of for business leaders, identify and justify the segment of consumers you would focus your marketing efforts upon (besides people with sufficient income). Discuss how you would want to position this trip in consumers’ minds (i.e., what two or three words would you use to describe this trip?) so that they would think it worth the time, money, and effort. Create a tagline/slogan that you think fits the positioning which you could use to promote the trip.

Describe online or other advertising or recommendations you have received that have surprised you or otherwise caused you some alarm or trepidation.

Primary Post Discussion Questions (Part 1-answer all discussion questions thoroughly):

Ethics of Algorithms- datasets, data points, and data privacy (500 words).

  1. Listen to Open Mike Eagle’s song “Dark Comedy Morning Show.” Do you agree or disagree that a “whole ‘nother labor force” will be required to spot, see, or recognize our habits to make use of them to predict and influence our behavior, choices, and spending habits? Why or why not? Cite Tom Jokinen and Charles Duhigg in your considered response to this question regarding the labor force required to make meaningful use of large datasets.
  2. What opaque boxes has Netflix, Target, YouTube, Amazon, Google, Facebook, Procter &
  3. Gamble, Starbucks, Spotify, the University of Arizona, etc. placed you into? Offer a description of how two of the above behemoths “sees” you and what two of these companies or organizations thinks you are like. How do you feel about corporations, organizations, or even hiring managers knowing most, if not all, of your demographic information, your internet search activities, and your daily habits to then “camouflage” how much they know about you so as to not “spook” you with overly precise recommendations, attention, coupons, suggestions, newsfeeds, or advertising (Duhigg)?
  4. Describe online or other advertising or recommendations you have received that have surprised you or otherwise caused you some alarm or trepidation. Consider the father who had to call to apologize to the Target store manager because the analytics and/or data science information gathered about his daughter’s reproductive health was more prescient, in terms of what was occurring under his roof, than he was. Has the knowledge of the neighborhood shopkeeper from 100 years ago, pre-WWI, been outstripped by business intelligence in the 21st century?

Important Notes:

  • Remember that high quality academic and reflective writing is required in all of your posts, which should be spell-checked, semi-formal, and well organized. Spell-checking is an enabled D2L feature (abc V), as is editing your posts.
  • There is an emphasis on quality posts over a large quantity of posts.
  • If it is apparent, from your primary post, that you have not engaged thoroughly with the required and assigned course reading for 2.9 you will not receive full credit for your primary post. You should cite and engage with Tom Jokinen, Adrienne LaFrance, Will Oremus, and Charles Duhigg, in your primary post this week.
  • Note: you must answer all five questions (1-5) fully and should plan to write 500 words in your primary post and 100 words in each secondary post to receive full credit for this assignment.

CAVEAT: If you are concerned about accidentally losing your post due to spell-check glitches within D2L, compose within Google Docs, MS Word, or a plain text editor. Please do not attach MS Word files or PDF files to the discussion this week.
