Discuss the results of the financial analysis including savings achievements, future budget modifications, and life impacts that could derail the budget in the coming year.

Touchstone 4: Analyzing Your Personal Finances

SCENARIO: Three months have passed since you created your first financial plan (i.e., the Unit 2 Touchstone). In that time, your budget has gone through some changes. The good news is that your income has increased because of your strong performance at work. However, health care and miscellaneous costs have gone up along with your earnings. You will need to reallocate your monthly budget based on these changes to see how you’re progressing toward your original savings goal.

While you appreciate numbers and figures, you also know that a strong financial analysis needs visual information. As part of your progress check, you’ve committed to creating a set of graphs that you can share with your financial advisor.

ASSIGNMENT: This assignment has two parts. In part 1, you will analyze personal finance data based on the scenario described above. You’ll use your problem solving and agility skills to balance three monthly budgets, and you’ll use your technology skill to graph the spending allocations in each of them. Finally, you’ll sharpen all three skills as you calculate and graph the progress you’re making toward your original savings goal.

In part 2, you will answer reflection questions about the decisions you made, identify how to create more savings opportunities, and make predictions about life and economic impacts that could affect the future of your plan.

For this assignment, you will:

  • Create three monthly budgets and perform a personal financial analysis using Microsoft Excel.
  • Summarize changes in expenditures between budgets.
  • Show the results of the analysis using appropriate graphs in Excel.
  • Explain how the graph types you have selected will help your financial advisor understand the data.
  • Discuss the results of the financial analysis including savings achievements, future budget modifications, and life impacts that could derail the budget in the coming year.
  • Reflect on what the analysis might reasonably look like in one year, accounting for economic factors such as inflation and the consumer price index.

Download the Excel template below, which further breaks down the steps involved in this assignment. You will return the completed template as your Touchstone submission.

SAMPLE CASE STUDY

  • Introduction:

Gold pizza is a Pizza restaurant established in 2000. The pizza restaurant uses food ingredients, including meat, vegetables, and seafood, which meet the set standards. It is a small restaurant owned by two people. One of them was responsible for buying goods and bringing them to the restaurant two times a day: every morning and late afternoon. The other owner manages the restaurant activities and organizes shifts for employees. Because the restaurant is open 24 hours, seven days a week, with three shifts, they employ well-experienced employees on each shift. The restaurant has three chefs for making the dough of pizza and sauce, three well-trained employees for preparing and putting the ingredients in the pizza, and three well-trained employees for cooking the pizza and controlling the oven heat. The owners work in this restaurant with other employees to help them.

  • Business process: (The order process )

The process starts by welcoming the customer and giving them the menu. The customer looks into the menu and then places their order. The cashier writes down the order on a separate paper for each customer, calculates the prices, and then asks the customer to pay (3 minutes).  After getting the payment, the cashier handed the paper of each order to the second employee. The second employee then starts pizza preparation based on the order (the restaurant has two bases of dough: the thin dough and the thick dough) (4 minutes). The next employee is responsible for filling the pizza with the ingredients based on each customer’s order (2 minutes). The next employee takes the pizza, puts it into the oven until it is ready, and then gets it back (3 minutes for thin dough base and 5 minutes for thick dough base). The last employee cuts the pizza and packages it, then hands it to the customer (2 minutes).

  • The current situation:

The restaurant starts to get a lot of orders that are over its capacity due to its reputation. It usually gets around 25 orders from persons coming to their restaurant in each hour. Each order – on average – includes 4 Pizza of different bases and ingredients. However, the restaurant lost a couple of its experienced employees responsible for preparing and cooking pizzas.

  • The Issues:

The Gold pizza restaurant was very successful and had many customers and significant revenue. However, the restaurant starts to lose many of its loyal customers and receives a considerable number of complaints. The managers started to investigate the complaints they received. They also contacted their loyal customers to understand the different issues more clearly. After this deep investigation, they categorized the issues into the following categories:

  • Some of the pizza’s bases and ingredients are unavailable in the early afternoon or late night.
  • The waiting time becomes unacceptable to customers.
  • The quantity of ingredients is not always the same which affecting the taste of the pizza.
  • The thick dough base of pizza is sometimes undercooked.
  • The customers sometimes get some of their pizza cold.
  • The customers sometimes get the wrong order.

Note: the above mentioned case study is just an example; students are supposed to find a separate case study for any area of manufacturing, business, market, etc.

What are the source(s) of water for the area? Is the use sustainable? Are there issues with water scarcity? Are the water sources used the best option in your opinion? Why or why not? What are other potential options besides the primary sources?

Geology Question

Writing Assignment Instructions

The objective of these assignments is for you to explore how geological factors impact society and how we in turn affect the environment around us.  You will be investigating the environmental geology of Los Angeles, and will be writing a complete report, split into three separate assignments.  In the first paper, you will describe the geological setting of Los Angeles. In the second paper, you will discuss natural hazards that have affected the area or that could potentially impact the area in the future.  In the last paper, you will assess the use (and/or abuse) of resources (water, mineral, energy).

Paper 1 Instructions

Minimum Length: 400 words (about ½ -3/4 page)

Briefly introduce the city and describe the geologic setting of the area.  You should write it in standard essay format, but the questions below should guide the content of the paper:

  1. Where in the world is Los Angeles? Any particularly interesting facts/features in a geological/geographical sense – not sports/nightlife/tourism/etc.
  2. What is the tectonic setting? What plate is it on? What are the two closest plate boundaries?
  3. What is the topography in the area? (Is it flat, mountainous, hilly, etc.)
  4. What waterbodies are in the area? (e.g. oceans, rivers, lakes)
  5. What is the geologic setting of the area? How did the area form (it’s actually very complicated –keep it simple and don’t get hung up on the details)? What kind of rocks are around (don’t need to be too specific, but at least narrow down to sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic and how they formed in a general sense)?

Paper 2 Instructions

Minimum Length: 800 words (~2.5pg)

The objective of this paper is to conduct a risk assessment of geologic hazards that may pose a risk to Los Angeles. Include the following 3 sections (use the bold section headings below):

  1. Geologic Hazards in Los Angeles. What types of geological hazards is the city most at risk of? For all of the hazards we have discussed (volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, floods, coastal erosion, and coastal storms), provide a brief discussion of whether they are a concern in LA and why/why not.
    1. Indicate which hazards pose the greatest threat.
    2. If any hazards are not a problem, indicate why not.
    3. Note: DO NOT INCLUDE Fires/wildfires, tornadoes, wind, or resource-related issues (the last of these will go in Part 3).

  1. Historic Disasters. Have there been significant geological disasters in the area in the past (historic or pre-historic)?
    1. Describe at least three major past geologic disasters. Include at a minimum:
      1. the geology associated with the disaster (e.g. what kind of volcano, what kind of eruption, what kind of fault, what kind of flooding, etc.)
      2. the impact on people/society (deaths, damage, etc.).

  1. What is being done to manage the hazards in Los Angeles? What else could be done (if anything)?

Paper 3 Instructions

Minimum Length: 700 words (~2pgs).

The third paper addresses the use, potential use, and/or abuse of resources in the area.  The sections for this paper:

  1. What are the source(s) of water for the area? Is the use sustainable? Are there issues with water scarcity?  Are the water sources used the best option in your opinion? Why or why not? What are other potential options besides the primary sources?

  1. Are there water quality issues (or were there in the past)? (This is for any of the water sources). If so, what are the contaminants, why are they present, and what are the human/environmental risks associated with them.

  1. Where does LA get its energy? Why? What are the pros/cons of these sources? Thinking long-term, can you recommend changes to the energy resources plan? (If you have trouble finding LA-specific information, you can discuss California as a whole).

  1. Are there major sources of mineral resources in the region? Describe what they are, how are they obtained, and what impacts does obtaining them have on human and environmental health.

  1. Are there energy resources in the SoCal region? If so, what are they, why are they there, how are they obtained, and what impacts does obtaining them have on human and environmental health?

A new computer system will cost a company $250,000 today. It will help reduce expenses by $50,000 per year for each of the next four years. The computer will be depreciated using the MACRS 3 year life class. The tax rate is 29 percent. If the interest rate is,2eloercent, what is the NPV of the proposed computer?

Finance question, for cash flow estimation

Chapter 7 Problems:

1. A firm is considering a new project. The project is expected to generate sales of 15,0CC units per year. Units will sell at $14 each. Variable costs are expected to be $8 each for the first year, $7 each thereafter. Fixed costs will be $5,000 per year. The machine used to make the products will cost $100,000 to install and will be depreciated over a MACRS 3 year life. The project is expected to exist for exactly four years. Working capital requirements will be $10,000. At the end of the project, the machine will be sold for $20,000. The tax rate is 38 percent What is the NPV of this project if the interest rate is 10 percent?

2. A new process is expected to generate sales of $100,000 in the first year, increasing by 15 percent each year for the following three years. Variable costs are expected to be 29 percent of sales. Fixed costs are expected to be $10,000 per year. Working capital is expected to be 20 percent of the next year’s sales. A fully-depreciated machine to produce our product is already in place in our plant and can be sold for $20,000 today. If the machine is used to make the products, it will be worthless in four years. The project will last four years. The interest rate is 12 percent. The tax rate is 42 percent. What is the NPV of this project?

4. A warehouse is currently sitting empty, but can be rented out to a third party for $100,000 a year. A project is proposed in the warehouse by your company which will require an investment of $200,000 and will be depreciated using MACRS over a five year life. At the end of the project in THREE YEARS, the machinery will be sold for $50,000. Products sold will be 20,000 units per year at $30 each. Variable costs will be 35 percent of sales. Fixed costs (not counting the warehouse) will be $20,000 per year. Working capital will be $50,000. The tax rate is 30 percent. If the interest rate is 10 percent, what is the NPV of this project?

For a list of 100 surnames, how many milliseconds did a Bubble Sort take? For a list of 100 surnames, how many milliseconds did a Java’s Sort take?

CSCI-2467 Lab 14 – Sorting Algorithms

Background

Download the starter project Lab14.zip. Unzip the file with 7zip using “Extract Here”. Open the Lab14 project with IntelliJ. The project contains two data files containing serialized String arrays containing surnames (from the census data set).

  • surnames.ser – contains 100 surnames
  • bigsurnames.ser – contains 25,000 surnames

Assignment

Implement a Bubble Sort for sorting arrays of Strings.

Modify the Main method to first call your Bubble Sort sort method and then call Java’s built-in sort. Make sure that your Bubble Sort is working properly. When you run the program, it will compare the run times of your Bubble Sort and the Java sort algorithm using the list of 100 surnames.

Once you are convinced the program is working, change the program to use the larger dataset. Run the program and compare the run times of the two algorithms.

Once you’ve completed the program, answer the following questions. Zip your project and submit your zipped project for grading and this Word document with your answers:

  1. For a list of 100 surnames, how many milliseconds did a Bubble Sort take?
  2. For a list of 100 surnames, how many milliseconds did a Java’s Sort take?
  3. For a list of 25,000 surnames, how many milliseconds did a Bubble Sort take?
  4. For a list of 25,000 surnames, how many milliseconds did a Java’s Sort take?
  5. Which algorithm is more efficient?
