What foods provided most of the sodium for the day? How could sodium have been decreased if your daily intake was above the recommendation of <2400 mg? Was saturated fat <10% of total calories? If not, why?

Lab 5 Fast Food

Spring 2023

In this lab, you will utilize the free online program MYPLATE.  Your estimated calorie needs will be calculated using this program, which you will then use to complete Lab 5.

This lab utilizes a free online government program designed to help all follow a healthier diet and way of life.  This information is then used in the lab to help you plan a day of eating out at fast food/fast casual restaurants and stay within your recommended percentages of total calories for fat, carbohydrates, protein as well as sodium.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Visit gov and click on Start Quiz.
  2. Begin the quiz and answer all questions.
  3. Once the quiz is completed, you will receive results where you can see your intake of each food group and how you rate.
  4. Next visit gov/myplate-plan – click on START under Get Your MyPlate Plan.
  5. After the input of basic health data, you will receive your recommended calorie level. Click on your estimated calorie level to get a full plan.  Click on DOWNLOAD your MyPlate plan.
  6. The first page with your estimated calorie needs and food plan is all that is needed for the lab and will be loaded with the lab in Canvas. Save both as a PDF then load.
  7. You will use all of the information (recommended calorie level and food group info) to complete Lab 5.

REMINDER of items to load:

  • lab worksheet
  • first page of your results as noted in #6 above.

Use the recommended calories and other info from MyPlate to complete the following:

Synopsis:

You have a busy day ahead and will be away from home for all three meals.  You will have to rely on fast food/fast casual restaurants for all meals but would like to eat as healthy as possible.  What would be the best choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner???

Instructions:

Use nutrition facts/nutrient data for selected fast food/fast casual restaurants to plan all three meals.  Examples might be Chick Fil A, Panera, Whataburger, Chilis, Panda Express or any other fast food/fast casual type of restaurant. You will need to choose wisely to stay within or as close to the recommended amounts for fat, saturated fat, sodium, carbohydrates, and protein. You will calculate estimated needs below.   All work must be shown for full credit!

ALSO – regardless if you normally do not eat three meals a day, this lab requires you to include three meals.

Calculate estimated needs of nutrients according to the following recommendations using the recommended calories for YOU from MyPlate. Answers to be shown in table below under ESTIMATED NEEDS.

Instructions

  1. Build the model for profit model for gaming mouse in R.
  2. Answer questions 1-16 to the Rmd model.

Model

A manufacturer of wireless gaming mouse is preparing to set the price on a new model. Demand (D) is thought to depend on the price (P) and is represented by the model:

D = 2500 – 3P

The accounting department estimates that the total costs (C) can be represented by

C = 6000 + 4D

Develop a model for the total profits (Revenues minus Costs) and represent it on an Excel spreadsheet. Consider demands as units sold. Create columns for price, demand, revenue, costs, and profits. Use a table and a graph with $ on the y-axis and Demand on the x-axis to find the price at which profit is maximized.

Questions to Answer

  1. When the price for the gaming mouse is set to $100, what is the corresponding prediction for demand?
  2. When the price for the gaming mouse is set to $100, what is the corresponding projected revenue?
  3. When the price for the gaming mouse is set to $100, what are the corresponding costs?
  4. When the price for the gaming mouse is set to $100, what are the corresponding projected profits?
  5. Build a column in Excel for Price and consider price in $10 increments from $50 to $600. (This means your column should have $50, $60, $70, $80, etc. all the way to $600.) At what price for the gaming mouse is projected demand minimized?
  6. At what price for the gaming mouse is projected demand maximized?
  7. At what price for the gaming mouse is projected profit maximized?
  8. At what price for the gaming mouse is projected revenue maximized?
  9. True/False: Costs are projected to increase as the price for gaming mouse goes up.
  10. True/False: The lower the price for the gaming mouse, the higher the projected demands.

Additional Questions to Include in Rmd file

What is your stand and how does the data support you? Write a new argument related to your chosen issue question and use data to help support you.

Paper 4: What is your stand and how does the data support you?

Prompt: Write a new argument related to your chosen issue question and use data to help support you.

Objectives

  • Construct a 5-6 page researched argument to the issue question you have chosen.
  • You can use the working claim from Paper 3, but you cannot do the same argument as any previous paper.
  • Use 5 college appropriate source (does include the data set) to support your argument.
  • The paper will mainly be supported by 4 sources. 3 sources must support your argument, and the fourth will be related to your rebuttal. You should start with the sources from the Paper 3 Annotated Bibliography; however, you can change them out or add additional sources.
  • Find data from a college appropriate source that will be used as evidence to support a reason or your rebuttal. Present the data as a graph and discuss the data in the paper. This counts as your fifth required source.
  • Effectively support a focused claimed with audience appropriate reasons and detailed evidence.
  • Use ethos and pathos to support your argument.
  • Include a one paragraph rebuttal that fairly refutes some opposition to your argument. This includes evidence to support your refutation.

Directions

  • Using your research, including your data, decide on a viable claim.
  • Make sure to have a group of related reasons and develop them using evidence from your sources. Make sure at least four sources are used, as well as a separate source for your data set.
  • Choose evidence to support every reason. At least one of these must be an analysis of your data set.
  • Create a graph that illustrates the point you wish to make with the evidence. Format and document the graph using APA style.
  • Make sure to have a group of related reasons and develop them using evidence from your sources. Make sure at least four sources are used, as well as a separate source for your data set.
  • Find an opposing view to some part of your argument. Construct a focused rebuttal that fairly argues against the opposition’s view using evidence from college appropriate sources.

How would you define “art”? What makes something a work of art? What are the characteristics of a work of art according to you, not according to the textbook, a dictionary, or a website?

HUMN 1101 Research Paper Assignment

3-5 pages/750-1250 words (not including Works Cited page) Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins 2 documented sources and a Works Cited page Citation and documentation style: MLA format

How would you define “art”? What makes something a work of art? What are the characteristics of a work of art according to you, not according to the textbook, a dictionary, or a website?

In this essay, discuss your own personal definition of the word “art” and the characteristics of what you consider to be great art. Be sure to include specific artists/artistic periods that you feel exemplify your definition, as well as specific examples of the artist’s work or work from that historical period. You may choose artists/artistic periods from the ones we’ve covered in class and ones from elsewhere in the textbook. You may even use current artists and musicians as examples as well.

After reflecting on your research and your own observations, in a 1-2 page paper, discuss your thoughts. Which theory do you find more credible? Explain your opinion using examples and findings from your research.

Language Development

In chapter 6 of your textbook we learn about language development during the first two years.

• According to the nativist perspective, infants are born with special language systems which enable them to easily acquire language, through a language acquisition device (LAD). Studies of the Wild Boy of Aveyron support the idea that we must learn language during a critical period of our development. Learning theorists, however, believe that children learn language from the stimuli they are exposed to in their environment.

• Conduct your own research on these 2 perspectives. After reflecting on your research and your own observations, in a 1-2 page paper, discuss your thoughts. Which theory do you find more credible? Explain your opinion using examples and findings from your research.

Read the poem. Read it quickly at first; then read it slowly several times. Try to hear the poem aloud in your head or find a place to read it aloud. Write down the first two things you think about after reading the poem.

Poetry Explication Notes

Directions: Use the following handout from The Language of Literature for a guide on “How to Read a Poem (And Then Write About It).” Follow each step as you complete your explication.

Step 1: Forget what the poem may mean, is supposed to mean, or what it may be about.

Step 2: Look at the title. Jot down three things it suggests to you. Give literal (concrete) meanings as well as figurative (abstract) things coming to mind.

Step 3: Read the poem. Read it quickly at first; then read it slowly several times. Try to hear the poem aloud in your head or find a place to read it aloud. Write down the first two things you think about after reading the poem.

Step 4: Now look at the poem. How is it put together? Take notes on each of the following that apply:

  1. alliteration
  2. rhymes
  3. rhythms
  4. repetitions
  5. figures of speech: similes, metaphors, personification, symbolism, etc.

Step 5: List any features you notice about the language in the poem and take notes on the following:

  1. stops and pauses
  2. punctuation, or lack of it
  3. capital letters, or no capitals
  4. line breaks
  5. adverbs and adjectives
  6. sentences or fragments
  7. verb tense
  8. organization of stanzas

Step 6: What patterns do you see emerging from your lists? Look at the list below and write short notes about your observations:

  1. sensory details
  2. emotions
  3. images
  4. puzzling words

Step 7: Read the poem again. Form some guesses at what the poem means.

Step 8: Answer the following questions about voice and tone:

  1. Who is speaking in the poem?
  2. To whom is the poem spoken?
  3. What is the tone of the poem?

Step 9: By now, you should have some solid information about what your poem is all about. Read the poem again. Consider why the poet made the choices you identified in steps 4-7. How do you think these things contribute to the meaning? Write your response in your notes.

Step 10: If you have not already noticed, with your notes from steps 1-9, you have a great start on a written poetry explanation (or explication). It should be a multi-paragraph essay. You may want to include other observations, such as:

  1. Record a line of the poem you thought was powerful.
  2. Did you like or dislike the poem? (It is okay to be honest, as long as you justify it.)
  3. Does the poem remind you of another poem/story/event? If so, explain it.
