Identify at least two structural changes in the organization necessary to adapt to the needs of professionals as differentiated from employee work groups. Is it possible to be both employed and professional in the contemporary healthcare workplace?

Critical Thinking Set 2

The following questions will allow the learner an opportunity to synthesize course readings and literature and critically reflect upon course concepts. Substantive responses should be provided for each question in a paragraph format. Each set of questions must be at least 250 words. Do not answer each individual questions. This is a synthesis of the questions not individual answers. Responses that include references to course materials or literature must follow APA formatting guidelines. A title page for question set submissions is not required. References may be listed immediately following the response to the question.

Question 1: Differentiating professions from employee work groups is an important consideration for leaders as they work to more clearly establish the relationship between the organization and the professional. Professionals are driven by accountability which incorporates in its framework the elements of autonomy, authority and competence. As you refine your understanding of the role of the professional consider and discuss the following key questions (remember this is will a single document not an answer to each individual question)

1. What do professionals need from each different employee work groups?
2. Name at least two leadership behaviors essential in leading professionals from different employee work groups.
3. Identify at least two structural changes in the organization necessary to adapt to the needs of professionals as differentiated from employee work groups.
4. Is it possible to be both employed and professional in the contemporary healthcare workplace?
5. What might have to change in order to make the organization more supportive of the life and action of a professional?

Question 2: If motivation primarily comes from within and is generated by individuals, different strategies for engaging staff must be utilized. The leader's personal charisma and personality characteristics are not sufficient to create the context for consistent and constant staff engagement. Aligning staff's personal motivation with organizational goals is critical to generating investment and ownership on the part of the staff. It is important for the leader to take time to delineate the sources of staff motivation in order to help staff align their personal
goals with the goals of the organization (remember this is will a single document not an answer to each individual question)

Discuss how some of that can occur as you respond to the following questions:
1. What techniques might the leader use to get a sense of individual staff member’s personal work motivation?
2. How might the leader determine what themes or consistency exists between individual motivator and the capacity to motivate the staff as a group?
3. What information must the leader delineate or make available to staff about the organization and organizational decisions as a first step in engaging with them in both responding to the organization and advancing both personal and organizational agendas?

Case Study 2: Diabetes Type I

Meet the Patient: Lara Fielding
Lara Fielding, a 20-year-old college student, comes to the student health center with a 4-day history of flu-like symptoms. She reports feeling increasing fatigue, thirst, and nausea over the last 24 hours. Further assessment and lab work indicates that Lara is experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). She is transferred to an acute care facility for treatment.

Assessment
The nurse notes that Lara’s breath has a fruity odor, and she is exhibiting Kussmaul respirations.

Question 1: What is the mechanism that results in Kussmaul respirations?

Lab work reveals that Lara’s blood glucose level is 370 mg/dl, plasma bicarbonate is 8 mEq/L, potassium is 5.2 mEq/L, and she has elevated ketones in her urine. The goals of treatment in DKA include correcting fluid imbalance and restoring normal pH, electrolytes, and glucose.

Question 2: To achieve the goal of restoring Lara’s fluid volume, the nurse would expect to implement which intervention?

Question 3: To restore Lara’s blood glucose to a normal level, what should the nurse prepare to administer?

Question 4: In addition to monitoring Lara’s blood glucose level, what additional lab values should the nurse monitor carefully? (Select all that apply)
1. Uric acid
2. Hemoglobin
3. Calcium
4. Potassium
5. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)

Manifestations
Once the acute ketoacidosis is controlled, Lara is told that she has Type 1 diabetes mellitus. The nurse obtains Lara’s history. Lara states that prior to the flu, she had been healthy. However, she had noticed that she had been eating more than normal, but had not been gaining any weight. Lara also states that she had been drinking a lot of diet colas and that she got up at night frequently to go to the bathroom.

Question 5: List the classic symptoms of diabetes.

Write a short paper on your opinion of what the occupancy of The Station should have been.

CASE STUDY

Write a short paper on your opinion of what the occupancy of The Station should have been given the following:

In the NFPA Life Safety Code power point:

  • Slides 82 and 83 list the minimum square footage per person given what the building is utilized for.
  • Slide 119 shows the floorplan of the Station and gives the usable square footage as 2300 square feet. ( space able to be occupied by the public)

The occupancy set by the Fire Marshal was 404 people ( a little more than 5 square feet per person )

  • Slide 124 shows that for Concentrated Use ( 7 sq ft per person) , the occupancy would be 329
  • it also shows that for Less Concentrated Use ( 15 sq ft per person), the occupancy would be 153

You are the Fire Marshal for West Warwick, Rhode Island prior to the fire. Submit a short paper on what number you would set as the occupancy of the building and give a reasoning why.

Identify one example of an organization that created value for itself through outsourcing part of its supply chain. Provide a link to one resource.

Benefits and Risks of Outsourcing the Global Supply Chain

Globalization has created many opportunities for organizations. There are many advantages and ways to create value through outsourcing portions of one’s global supply chain. For each opportunity, there are also many ways for the project to run into problems.

In your initial post, address the following:

  • Identify one example of an organization that created value for itself through outsourcing part of its supply chain. Provide a link to one resource.
    • Identify the benefit that occurred.
    • How did this benefit help the organization create value? Who was the value created for—the organization, or the customer?

In your replies to at least two peers, discuss potential risks of outsourcing for the examples they provided—for example, risks to supplier quality or stability, intellectual property, or reputation. The following questions may help develop your responses:

  • Can you provide an example of an organization that started outsourcing the supply chain and then stopped? What risks did the organization face that caused them to stop the project?
  • Can you provide an example of an organization that outsourced similarly and faced reputational damage due to the project?

Create a resource guide that highlights how relationships are influenced by trauma and narrative tools for working with trauma.

Bridging with a Narrative Lens

You will create a resource guide that highlights how relationships are influenced by trauma and narrative tools for working with trauma. Please note that this assignment can be more of a listing rather than a formal paper. Think of this resource guide as something you would pass along to fellow MFTs that allows them to see how narrative and group processes can be applied to relationship therapy.

Part 1- Description
The first part of the resource guide is a description of experiences that can be part of relationships as a result of past trauma in one or both partners.

Part 2 – The Narrative Approach
The second part of the resource guide is specific to interventions that are part of the narrative model. The readings for this week build on the narrative model and describe populations that might be influenced by trauma and how this influences relationships. Narrative tools and techniques (and adapted narrative tools and techniques) are discussed throughout the readings and can be applied to this resource guide.
