What is the contemporary civil rights issue? Why is it a civil rights issue? Why is it important? What will you need to research?

FINAL ESSAY AND PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Write a paragraph in which you explain the issue you will explore in your final essay. What is the contemporary civil rights issue? Why is it a civil rights issue? Why is it important? What will you need to research? Be specific about the topic—do not say, for example, “racism” or “sexism.” The topic has to be specific so you can develop a plan of collective action (method of protest, boycott, etc.) to respond to it much as the civil rights leaders we have studied responded. So a good topic might be the way racism impacts a particular issue within health care or education or the workplace. You could make similarly specific types of arguments about situations at work or school in which you can see sexist justifications for gender discrimination, or nativist justifications for anti-immigrant discrimination, or homophobic justifications for anti-transgender discrimination, or ableist justifications for discrimination against (or failure to provide access to) the differently abled, and so on.

Using the assigned readings as a guide, answer the following question: How do we conduct research validly and ethically?

Discussion Post Week 2

Using the assigned readings as a guide, answer the following question: How do we conduct research validly and ethically?

You will respond to the prompt in 2 parts: a thread of 400-600 words in response to the Discussion prompt, and a reply of at least 200-300 words to 2 classmates’ threads. Each thread, reply, and cited reference must follow current APA format.

You must show respect and sensitivity toward varying opinions and ideas presented. Furthermore, you are expected to respond to all questions posted by your instructor and/or classmates in your thread, even if you have already posted your reply to another student’s thread.

Title the subject line of replies as “Reply to John Smith,” or “Reply to Jane Doe,” so that it will be clear to whom you are responding. Note that replies such as “I like what you said,” “That’s a good point,” and “I disagree with your comment,” do not count as complete replies. Instead, add substantial supporting thoughts or ideas to elucidate why you agreed with the thread or provide alternative ideas and thoughts to demonstrate why you disagreed.

As one of the goals of Discussions is to encourage student community learning, not every thread will have a response from the instructor. Rather, the instructor will respond to a few threads in a way that adds to the conversation, asks pertinent questions, or summarizes some of the key points made by students.

See the Discussion Grading Rubric for direction on how your participation will be evaluated.
