Think of a writing theme. Draw a Mind Map with the theme in the middle. Expand your map by coming up with the language/diction you want to use to get your tone across.

Style & Tone

This week we took a look at style and tone and its variations. We are looking at what makes the audience feel the writing. We are also looking at how the author uses diction to control the tone. This is done differently based on genre. This week we will do some exercises to play with style and tone.

Part I:

1) Think of a writing theme. Draw a Mind Map with the theme in the middle.

2) Expand your map by coming up with the language/diction you want to use to get your tone across.

(VIEW MAP BELOW IN ADDITIONAL MATERIAL)

3 Further expand your map with images you may want to incorporate into your writing.

4) Consider writing a few lines down in bubbles around the map.

5) Stop and sit for a moment and try to feel the tone you want to use to write with. Sit with it for a second listening to the rhythm of the feeling in yourself.

6) Using the mind map, start to write using the map as a guide.

7) Read the work over aloud and make sure the music of the writing works for you.

Part II:

-Do not write an essay. The writing should be at least two paragraphs.

-Use your mind map in a video of yourself explaining the drawing and the diction sequence you brainstormed. Afterwards read your work to the class in a video.

The BRIC countries collectively are not going to be a threat to other nations. Why? Diverging economic models and. Other nations with more potential i.e. Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia

The rise and fall of the BRICs

In 2001, Jim O’Neil looked at the GDP standings of the world economies and using GDP projections observed that Brazil, Russia, Indian and China (the BRICs) share of world GDP was set to rise dramatically. Paper available here for reference: (November 30, 2001).

Analyse why Jim O’Neill was not correct about his thesis on the BRIC countries arguing and that the BRICS era is over.

Structure the essay along the following arguments:

1. The rise of the BRICS can be more accurately described as the rise of China and India

2. Political and economic issues have held back economic progress in Russia and Brazil particularly during the last decade ie 2010-20 (because of weak institutions, too much reliance on commodities, poor fiscal policies etc)

3. The BRIC countries collectively are not going to be a threat to other nations. Why? Diverging economic models and. Other nations with more potential i.e. Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia

4. Conclude with the point that the BRIC countries will become increasingly irrelevant and will not be able to rival the G7 and the Western nations. Why? You need more than growth to rival the current superpowers i.e. soft power, culture

Why is this topic worthwhile to write about? What is the purpose of the article? Who is it directed toward? Who was likely to be reading it where it was originally published? WHY would this topic interest readers?

Field Assignment: Article Analysis #3

Write in your own ‘voice’. If you do quote something from the article, be sure to cite it properly using APA-style in-text citation. But remember, I want you to think and analyze the article, not regurgitate what the article author wrote.
Use the following section headings and write at least one paragraph to describe each:
Introduction
Summarize the article in 4-6 sentences. One of these sentences must contain the main idea of the article.
Author
Who was the author of this article? Are they an expert in the field, someone who is reporting what experts have reported, or are they sharing their opinion?
What is the author trying to accomplish by writing this article? Is there an ‘agenda’ that you think the author has for writing the article and leading the reader through his/her thinking, or a conclusion you think the author is trying to lead you to? If so, what might that be?
Purpose
Why is this topic worthwhile to write about? What is the purpose of the article? Who is it directed toward? Who was likely to be reading it where it was originally published? WHY would this topic interest readers?
Critical Thinking
In a strong paragraph, summarize the ‘message’ from this article. What would the author want you to remember from it?
Personal Application
What was your impression of the article? Did what you learned from reading this change your thinking in any way? How can/will you use the information from this article in your work with children? Are there conclusions drawn by the author that you strongly agree or disagree with? This is your educated, reasoned opinion but you need to back up your opinion with information from the article.

The League of Nations Divide

ESSAY QUESTION:

  1. The decision about whether to join the League of Nations divided the United States. Explain the arguments offered by American proponents and opponents of the League and identify how the debate over American membership ultimately concluded.

Your quiz must use one-inch margins and Times or Times New Roman font and double spaced.

Think in terms of concepts, patterns of behavior, divergent worldviews and perspectives, and the ways that particular historical experiences can help you demonstrate that you understand “what happened.”  Be sure to cite relevant facts from the readings and/or lectures to support your argument.  In other words, demonstrate the validity of your argument; do not merely assert it.

All sources used – whether consulted, quoted, paraphrased, summarized, et cetera – must be acknowledged through a Chicago-style endnote (not footnote).  The failure to cite a source may open you up to a charge of plagiarism.  In other words, cite your sources!

Elaborate on the known Risks/Threats/Hazards/Vulnerabilities from the Hypothetical Threat Explain how damage from the Hypothetical Threat could impact the Dependencies/Interdependencies between critical infrastructure sectors

River

Scenario: You are working at a government agency and your section recently received a new intern, River, to learn about critical infrastructures. River will be with your section for at least six months, perhaps permanently. The section chief tasked you to write a short paper on three of the critical infrastructures for River this week and discuss them in terms of physical attacks, cyber events, and natural disasters.

You already talked to River about three of them through some casual discussions and you need to cover three of the remaining ones. Determine the ones from your first three discussions that you did not discuss yet. Determine which one of them you will use to discuss a physical attack, which one for a cyber event, and the remaining one for a natural disaster.

You decide that you need to write something that will catch River’s attention and provide the information in an interesting way. You determined to use the following outline for each of the three sections (plus the overarching requirements):

Description of a Hypothetical Threat (physical, cyber, or natural disaster)
Brief background on the Critical Infrastructure as it relates to National Security
Elaborate on the known Risks/Threats/Hazards/Vulnerabilities from the Hypothetical Threat
Explain how damage from the Hypothetical Threat could impact the Dependencies/Interdependencies between critical infrastructure sectors
Existing Resiliency related to Continuity of Operations
Consider how to Minimize Disruption that improves First Responder Safety.
