LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Assignment Overview

The LDP assignment synthesizes phase one & two of the HTM 301 course into a personalized plan. This assignment will help students to initiate a personalized plan for enhancing HTM competencies within the context of coursework, meaningful experiences, and professional passions.

Section One: Vision and Goals – This section asks students to envision their dream job consistent with their thoughts on the ideal leader and personal values. Students will represent their visions and goals in a visual representation in the form of a professional passions mind map.

Section Two: Reflections – This section guides students through a series of reflection questions where students synthesize what they learned about themselves and consider their own strengths and weaknesses related to their vision and goals.

Section Three: Competency Assessment – In this section, students list four specific behaviors for each of the 12 competencies. Students then synthesize their feedback and reflections to assess themselves on each competency.

Section Four: Personalized Development Activity – The final section of the LDP commits the student to enhancing their leadership competencies through the ongoing process of customized learning. Students identify three competencies they want to improve and, based on this, they develop an activity to complete in a future semester.

REQUIRED:

1. Completed Development Plan (all four sections, for HTM students specifically) represented on the students individual e-portfolio. Your mind map should be represented under the “professional passions” tab, while the rest of your LDP should be represented under “coursework highlights”. Do not simply upload links to documents, your work must be embedded onto your website.

Professional Passions Mind Map

Mind maps help you to organize and process complex and interwoven ideas and information. Using the information you’ve brainstormed on above, create a visual representation of your own mind map answering the following questions that correspond with the blue section of the mind map. Your map may be hand drawn or created using software of your choice. You will also need to write a short paragraph to accompany your map, providing a short description of what your map represents. Use the questions below to help guide you in creating your map and crafting your write up.

  • Your Big WHY? You need to know WHY you want to do the work. Write down exactly WHY you want to do your dream job, or reach certain goals. Clarity in this are will help you make intentional decisions moving forward.
  • Your Network: Who do you know? Think of people in your professional network that have been helpful in the past and those that could be helpful in the future. Describe ways in which you can work on building relationships with these people to help you get closer to your dream job.
  • Experience: What job do you have right now? Define your current role. What jobs, internships, externships or volunteer experiences have you had in the past? Write down the skills sets you’ve gained.
  • Execution Strategies: This is your roadmap. These are strategies that you will implement to step closer to your career goals.
  • Ideal Company: Who is your ideal company? If you don’t know, what does your ideal company look like? Do some research to see who aligns with your core values the best.
  • Ideal Professional Self: Describe your ideal professional self in 25 words or less. How do you want people to see you? What words or phrases do you want them to use when they describe you?

Section Two: Reflections

Simulation

Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses during the simulations. Identify the changes you would make if you were to take part in a second simulation. What areas do you think you could most improve upon?

My Perception and the Perceptions of Others

Use the following questions to guide you in your narrative. You do not have to answer each question one by one.

What did the industry observer say I did well/competency strengths?

How do my peers talk about my role on a team?

How did feedback from others surprise me?

What were the key lessons from my mentor network?

What disappointed me?

What exhilarated me?

What can I change/not change?

What would I do differently if I could?

What is my role in the outcomes of the semester?

Consider the questions above and synthesize what you learned about yourself this semester.

Section Three: Competency Assessment

For each competency, list four behaviors that convey the essence of the competency in action aligned with your vision of the ideal leader in hospitality and tourism. You may find it helpful to review the competency definitions article and industry interviews. Then, for each competency, assess yourself currently using the rating scale below. These ratings will serve as your baseline assessment, and you will reassess your own development in future semesters. Your ratings are for the purpose of learning and growth only—ratings will not influence course grades. Enter a number of 1 through 7 for yourself for each of the competencies.

Using what you have learned through your research and prior coursework, and what you know about trends in your chosen specializations, develop a creative project that demonstrates your knowledge of what’s up and coming in your specialization industry that focuses on your selected inspiration above (Entertainment, Fashion, or Music).

Understanding

Throughout this module you learned the significance of Information Literacy to the design field and how to leverage this skill as a designer. In this week’s discussion post you also need to research and understand the importance of visual design trends like color, typography and layout for communicating with a specific audience. Now it is time to put what you learned to the test. For this week’s challenge you will research and choose a current visual design trend popular in one of the industries listed below:

  • Entertainment
  • Fashion
  • Music

Using what you have learned through your research and prior coursework, and what you know about trends in your chosen specializations, develop a creative project that demonstrates your knowledge of what’s up and coming in your specialization industry that focuses on your selected inspiration above (Entertainment, Fashion, or Music).

For example: If your specialization is web design, you could design the home page for a band that’s popular with today’s trending music style. If your specialization is animation, you could create a dimensional fashion illustration or clothing model that focuses on current color trends in fashion. The choice of what you create is entirely up to you as long as it leverages your specialization software skills and focuses on one of the three supplied categories for today’s trends.

Determine the number of FTEs (full-time equivalents) ROI staff that is needed for the listed ROI processes if the volumes were merged and managed by the HIM department.

Performance Standard

Evaluate staffing needs to facilitate a functional health information management unit.

The HIM department includes the Release of Information function for LiveWell Healthcare which includes the hospital, the Emergency Department, the Surgery Center and the LiveWell Medical Office Building that houses 25 providers. It is connected to the hospital facility by an elevated walkway which is convenient for patients and their families. Recently, LiveWell on boarded a smaller medical office building in a neighboring town, Pontiac. Pontiac Medical Professionals (PMP) has 12 medical providers, and the onboarding process has included the evaluation of services that can be absorbed at LiveWell by existing LiveWell staff. The existing staff of PMP and LiveWell HIM is currently being reviewed because completion of Release of Information duties is under scrutiny and ROI has been problematic at PMP because basically anyone who gets a request handles it – there are no procedural norms. Staffing for both is listed below as well as the existing count of ROI processes:

LiveWell HIM Department

PMP (Now LiveWell Pontiac)

Staffing

One Director (1 FTE)

RPU Supervisor (Record Processing Unit) (1 FTE)

Coding Supervisor (1 FTE)

14 Coders (12.5 FTE)

8 Medical Transcriptionists (7 FTE)

6 Chart Analysts (6 FTE)

3 Document Imaging Technicians (3 FTE)

2 Physician Incomplete Coordinators (1.5 FTE)

2 Coding Facilitators (2 FTE)

1 Data Analyst(1 FTE)

1  Documentation Integrity Specialist (1 FTE)

1 Cancer Registrar (1 FTE)

1 Release of Information Coordinator (1 FTE)

1 ROI Support Staff (0.5 FTE))

12 Providers

8 RNS (6 Full time, 2 Part time)

10 LPNS (6 Full time, 4 Part time)

8 Medical Assistants

4 Receptionists

4 Coders

Volume of ROI Processes

(assume 52 weeks per year, 5 days per week, 260 workdays per year)

5 per day– attorney requests

5 per week – subpoenas

9 per day – insurance requests

20 per day -walk-in requests

1 per day miscellaneous request

20 pieces of mail each day

1 per week- attorney requests

1 per month – subpoenas

3 per day – insurance requests

3 per day -walk-in requests

  1. Determine the number of FTEs (full-time equivalents) ROI staff that is needed for the listed ROI processes if the volumes were merged and managed by the HIM department. A full-time equivalent works 2080 hours annually (12 months). One FTE = 2080 hours. Use standard rounding for your calculations.

Record your answer in full-time equivalents here:

Number of FTEs Needed for all ROI Processes =

Processing time for each request type is as follows:

35 minutes to complete- attorney requests

2.5 hours to complete – subpoenas

45 minutes to complete – insurance requests

10 minutes to complete -walk-in requests

30 minutes to complete – miscellaneous requests

30 minutes to open/log – mail each day

  1. Next compare the existing number of HIM FTEs in ROI to the number of Needed FTEs (#1 above) and assess the need for additional ROI staffing. Be sure to use data to support your assessment. Record your assessment and recommendation for staffing here:

Existing HIM FTEs in ROI= Needed FTEs in ROI=

With your upcoming speech in mind, how important is it that we use accurate language versus clear language in our upcoming presentations?

Speech

Tribute speeches often evoke more colorful, and detailed language to help our audience understand the emotions we are feeling, or the significance of the person being discussed. With your upcoming speech in mind, how important is it that we use accurate language versus clear language in our upcoming presentations?

For example, your mother may be “the greatest,” but my mother could be as well for completely different reasons! What is the role we have as an ethical, but dynamic speaker in this case?
