Health Communication

Construct a personal narrative about an experience that you have had where social support made a difference. Because social support is such an important Health Communication concept, explore this idea a bit further. In addition to using your course readings, find 2 outside peer-reviewed journal articles from the following sources:

  • The Journal of Health Communication
  • Health Communication

You should be able to relate, either personally or vicariously through a friend or family member, to these articles. Using the readings as a foundation, construct a 3-page personal narrativet hat covers the following information:

  • the health issue that you faced
  • if you provided or received social support
  • what kind of support?
  • how did the support help or hurt the health situation?
  • how do the course readings and the additional articles help you make sense of both the story and Health Communication even more?
  • You should be prepared to cite your additional sources both within text and in a References section, using APA 7th edition.

The Civil Rights Movement

Using the Internet, locate and read Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech given in Washington D.C., August 1963. Copy and paste the following keywords into your Google search bar: “I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr.” Feel free also to locate and incorporate additional scholarly sources to respond to this case study, including information on the Civil Rights Movement.

Construct the case study by responding to the following prompts:

  • Explain if the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s effectively changed the nation.
  • What effect would the Civil Rights Acts have across the continent on minority groups?
  • Do you think that the tactics and strategies that civil rights activists used in the 1960s would apply to today’s racial and ethnic conflicts? Why or why not?
  • Do the ideas of the 1960s still have relevance today? If so how? If not, why not?
  • Analyze how the Civil Rights Movement would impact diversity in America today

Critical Reading Responses
For this assignment, you are to select ONE of the secondary sources from your Annotated Bibliography #1 list. You should review the source again, very carefully, to clearly determine (1) the main point of the source, (2) some of the major issues raised in it, and (3) how the source relates to your research plan.

Each response should be about 300 words (one paragraph, one page, typed, double spaced). These responses should be a critical exploration of the source.

The reading response should ask critical questions—and explore possible answers—about the issues involved in the source. Responses should display careful thinking, beyond just surface details like summary or description. For these Critical Responses, you should consider that your objective is to demonstrate how the researched source supports your main idea for your project. Responses that explore a single issue or a couple of issues in “depth” will receive better grades than those that raise several issues, but only superficially. I am asking for a close reading in these responses; I am asking you to suggest how the source fits into the framework of one or two of the various issues raised in your thesis. Overall, the objective of these responses is to provide you with an avenue to build and demonstrate your critical thinking on your research topic.

The objective of these responses is to:
1. Provide an examination of how the secondary source considered for this exercise fits into your overall plan for the research project. You should provide an ample discussion of the source and apply it to your thesis to show how it will allow you to accomplish your stated goal in the thesis. Note: Do not merely summarize the source. Instead, you should discuss how it connects to your thesis.

2. Help you be more selective about the sources you choose for use in your research project. With a clear understanding of your plan (thesis statement), you will better gage the impact the secondary source will have on you supporting/arguing the thesis.

3. Help you to critically reflect on the thesis of the project. The secondary source should allow you to further demonstrate effective critical thinking on the subject.

4. Employ MLA citation (you must cite the course using correct and current MLA format). Note: Please provide your bibliographic citation at the top of the page. You should present your Revised Topic, Revised Thesis, and Source Citation at the top of the page.

5. Demonstrate effective use of Paraphrase and Summary techniques. Although quotes are allowed, you should consider using paraphrase and summary more as these methods encourage the interpretation and comprehension of the readings.
