Reflect on which arguments about the topic you chose from Canadian Points of View you accept, those outlined in the Point, Counterpoint, or a completely different argument. For you, what is the single most compelling argument regarding corona virus 2019 (COVID-19), and why?

Within the Canadian Points of View Reference Centre (which you can access via the Douglas College Library—you will need to consent to having a personal account with EBSCO information Services), explore topics from the list that interest you and about which you would like to develop a more informed perspective. Select one of the topics from the list, and prepare to write a persuasive essay in which you will argue your own point of view, supported by your own experience and/or observation, as well as research.

Your essay, which you will plan, research, and write this week and next, must include at least one of each of the following six types of research sources:

Points of View essay
Magazine
Newspaper
Reference book (may be a second Points of View essay)
Radio or TV news transcript
Academic journal.
You can easily access relevant sources of all of these types under Related Information on the left of the Overview of your topic. You can also use the search bar at the top of the home page (click on New Search) of the Canadian Points of View Reference Centre to find sources. Click on the question mark for pointers on conducting basic as well as advanced searches.

Follow the guidelines below (which you can also find in the Guide to Critical Analysis on the sidebar of each Points of View essay).

Based on the readings and review of the Related Items offered, consider the Point and Counterpoint commentary in light of your own set of personal values and understanding of the topic.

Write an 800- to 1,000-word essay response to the question above; include a thesis statement and 2–3 supporting arguments. See “Write a Thesis Statement” and “Write a Persuasive Essay” research guides for tips on how to write your essay.

Use facts from other resources found in Points of View Reference Centre™, other than the Overview, Point, and Counterpoint information. See “Judge Fact vs. Opinion” in the Research Guide section to help determine the value of the information you find.
Investigate some of the sources cited in the Bibliography at the end of each Point of View essay to review the kinds of sources those authors consulted.
For website information, first review the research guide article titled “Evaluate a Website.” Use the information you find there to guide your decisions on which sites provide the most credible information and would add value to your essay.

Write an academic book review for the following book: Mayeri, Serena. Reasoning from Race: Feminism, Law, and the Civil Rights Revolution. Harvard, 2011.

The general purpose of book reviews is to give your readers a good idea of what the book is about, what the main arguments and contributions are, and how the author goes about supporting her or his argument.

Reviews should be a minimum of 600 words in length, and follow these guidelines:

The “title” of your review should be the book’s publication info, including the author, title, place of publisher, name of publisher, date of publication, and edition you read (revised, ebook, etc.)
Your first paragraph is the most important. In it, you should concisely explain the book’s scope/time period, the author’s main purpose and arguments thesis. (This paragraph should be about 200 words and 14-16 lines)
The body of your review should offer some limited summary and should focus on the highlights of the book—chapters or sections where the author excels at originality or in supporting their argument, or ones that you found the most insightful or enjoyable to read. (Accomplish this in two or three paragraphs, at least 300 words)
Your final paragraph is not a throw-away “this is a good and interesting book” sort of thing. It should be helpful and substantive. If you feel comfortable doing so you should make some comparisons to other books you have read on a similar topic. You can reiterate particularly well done parts, and also acknowledge shortcomings. You can also discuss the sources the author used, particularly if they are especially relevant to the book’s argument or are from archives in other countries, etc. Assessment of the book. (About 100 words)
Limited quoting is acceptable. If you are quoting from the book, list include a parenthetical citation with the page number (5). Your name and institution affiliation (Tarleton State University) should appear at the bottom of your review.
Please note, book reviews are not book summaries. You are addressing the author’s argument, sources, and methodology, and you do not need to provide a chapter-by-chapter summary.

Suppose people’s willingness to pay follows normal distribution with mean μ and variance σ2 , derive likelihood function to estimate mean μ and variance σ2 based on the responses(yes or no) of n respondents.

Suppose a researcher wanted to estimate people’s willingness to pay for public construction project. He asked to i-th respondent that “Are you willing to pay Ai amount of tax for public construction project?”, and the respondent would only say yes or no. Suppose people’s willingness to pay follows normal distribution with mean μ and variance σ2 , derive likelihood function to estimate mean μ and variance σ2 based on the responses(yes or no) of n respondents. (Hint: A respondent will accept an offer if his/her willingness to pay is larger than the given amount of tax A)

View a feature film made between 1970–2000 you have not seen before (or will see later in this class) by a great director or featuring a great actor or actress. Pay particular attention to the screen play, camerawork (cinematography) the editing (montage) and the sound (this can include the music)

You will be responsible for watching a film and writing a 3-5 page essay in which you respond to prompts which will be provided for each paper. (This means at least 3 pages include the “My Criteria for Quality in Film” page and no longer than 5 pages. These assignments are reaction papers, not plot summaries or research papers. The key element here is that you will be telling the instructor what you have to say about the film, not what others have said.

View a feature film made between 1970–2000 you have not seen before (or will see later in this class) by a great director or featuring a great actor or actress. Just as you did in the first paper, comment on the specific film you saw. Pay particular attention to the screen play, camerawork (cinematography) the editing (montage) and the sound (this can include the music). You may also address special effects. Again, as you did in the first paper, talk about what you like, and what you dislike, about what you saw? Why do you like the things you like, and why do you dislike the things you dislike? Is the film a good film, or is it not?

Now that you have commented on the specific film you viewed, see if you can draw some general conclusions about the work of the director and of the main actors or actresses.

Be sure to comment on the overall impression you had of the film, including how you see it as an example of its genre and time period. Remember, this is not a research paper. I am interested in what you have to say, not in what you can learn by reading up on the film or the filmmaker.

Go back to the “My Criteria for Quality in Film” page. Based on your viewing this week’s film, add five new general conclusions. These statements should be numbered (6) through (10). Be sure to include entire page, including all of your previous criteria statements.

What about human diversity issues (e.g., was the sampling plan fair and inclusive, was the sample representative of the population or did it lead to biases in the findings?). Were ethical issues (e.g., human subjects’ protections) adequately addressed?

You are encouraged to identify a research problem that is related to your field placement and/or your areas of interest within social work, or just a problem that interests you. Stick to this outline. It will make the paper easier to write and more understandable for me to read.
For the research problem statement, consider and respond to the following questions. Use each question as a header for your paper.
1) What social problem will your research address?
a. Extent of the problem?
b. Who is directly (and indirectly) affected?
c. Are there additional reasons that we should concern ourselves with this problem?
2) What do we currently “understand” about the problem (e.g., from theory and/or research about related factors)?
3) For this section, you will identify five (5) research articles to read, review, and briefly describe that pertain to your research problem/area of interest. For each article answer the following:
a. What is the research topic, problem and/or research question addressed in the article?
b. What is the research design (e.g., exploratory, explanatory, or descriptive) and methodology (e.g., experimental, survey, single-subject, etc.)?
c. What are main variables or concepts of interest? How are these variables/concepts defined and measured?
d. What are the sampling procedures (e.g., probability, nonprobability, etc.)? What is the sampling frame and sample size?
e. What about human diversity issues (e.g., was the sampling plan fair and inclusive, was the sample representative of the population or did it lead to biases in the findings?). Were ethical issues (e.g., human subjects’ protections) adequately addressed?
f. What methods were used to collect the data?
g. What are the main findings of the research study?
h. What are the main strengths and limitations of the research study? Was the study rigorous in your opinion?

Discuss this body of research (thinking about all of the articles) in relation to your social problem.
a. How does this body of research contribute to what we currently understand about this social problem?
a. What is one gap in our current understanding and how is this gap preventing us from making progress on this social problem?
c. What kind of research study would you propose to conduct that would help to fill this gap in our understanding of this social problem?
d. What might be your (preliminary) research question or hypothesis?
These papers should be double-spaced, approximately 5-7 pages in length (not including

Identify a specific problem or need to serve as the basis for a strategic plan. The actual need that you identify could be related to process improvement, patient safety, quality service, effective workflow, or ongoing education to address a knowledge deficit.

Identify a specific problem or need to serve as the basis for a strategic plan. The actual need that you identify could be related to process improvement, patient safety, quality service, effective workflow, or ongoing education to address a knowledge deficit. The project must be patient-centered and must have a measurable outcome. The scope of the strategic plan should be such that it can be accomplished within an 8-week period of time and serve as a future capstone project in your final course. It is recommended that you interview formal and informal leaders in your chosen healthcare environment to assess for needs or problems that would benefit from a change initiative that might fall within your scope of practice and the assigned capstone time frame.

Identify at least 2 works or authors you will write about in your paper. You can write about more but that depends on your topic. If you are addressing topic of female oppression, you may want to identify several charters in the readings assigned to choose from – but limit yourself to 3-4 characters you will write about to discuss your topic.Your paper MUST have examples from readings as evidence proving or strongly supporting your thesis. Again, you will lose points for not providing this.

Section 1about 2 paragraphs (2 points for all required aspects) – about 300- 400 words: Introduce your topic and discuss the importance. Identify the works and the authors and the characters you will write about in this paper. What year was this written? Provide few details about the authors. End of this first paragraph state your thesis. Watch the YouTube. Again, you will lose points for not providing this.

Is Jill’s behavior ethical? Why? Use the relevant section of the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics to justify your response.

Consider the following scenario: Jill is conducting an experiment on the effects of story themes—traditional versus nontraditional—on memory for story details. She is paying participants $5 to complete a research protocol that takes about 40 minutes. Prior to beginning the protocol, participants sign a consent form. Jill is present during this time to answer questions and clarify areas of concern. One participant, Sarah, reads the consent form, agrees to participate, and begins the protocol. After about 12 minutes, she gets up and tells Jill that she has to go. She says she is sorry but she cannot complete the protocol. Jill offers her an additional $10 to stay in the study and complete the required tasks.
