Web Development Project 4

Project Grade (80pts total):

Each person has to upload the project to the Internet and D2L.  Required components of the Project include:

  • Find appropriate topics or cases for your final project (e.g, School Web Site, Bookstore Web Site, Commercial Web Site, personal/family website, etc.)
  • Documentation about your project in a Word Document
  • A recorded presentation about your project posted to a video hosting site
  • A complete website consisting of at least 6 pages (1 homepage and 5+ content pages) based on your topic, documentation, and presentation
  • Documentation and Source Code should be submitted to the D2L dropbox. The presentation should be posted in the appropriate Discussion topic.

Documentation Requirements

The documentation should be in a report or an essay format, rather than answering questions directly. Consider it documentation you and other developers can use to “get into the mindset” of being a developer in your site.

Is classical music growing and changing as rapidly as popular music? Which of these four pieces is the most innovative?

Discussion using 250 words for each post.

Question 1:

Read: Classical music is alive and well and being created right now. Sometimes classical music is perceived as stuffy or too intellectual to people unfamiliar with the genre; sometimes it does take a little bit of research to understand the music.

The operatic example by George Gershwin is the first major commercial opera written about the lives of black people (completed in 1935); he had a hard time getting it produced because of the subject matter, and because he refused to allow white singers in black face to portray the characters. If you’re interested in learning more about opera, Houston Grand Opera will be performing Turandot and Romeo and Juliet this spring, and it’s one of the best opera companies in the nation.

The ballet example from Appalachian Spring is a great example of how art forms support each other. Ballet is music and dance combined to tell stories. Copland is considered to have a truly “American” style of writing music; it doesn’t sound anything like the music being written in Europe at the time (1944). Houston Ballet is a great ballet company; I would recommend seeing one of their productions.

The choral example by the Houston Chamber Choir (I’m in the video!) is by living composer Frank Ticheli. This is the poem that he set to music:

Sing, Be, Live, See.
This dark stormy hour,
The wind, it stirs.
The scorched earth
Cries out in vain:
O war and power,
You blind and blur,
The torn heart
Cries out in pain.
But music and singing
Have been my refuge,
And music and singing
Shall be my light.
A lightof song
Shining Strong: Allelulia!
Through darkness, pain, and strife, I’ll
Sing, Be, Live, See…
Peace.

The instrumental example is by HCC professor (and my office-mate) Dr. Joel Love. He writes for many different instruments, but has become well-known for his excellent writing for Saxophone.

Finances

1.Answer and show working out with the following maths questions:

Assume the following information

  Quoted price
Spot rate of Euro 0.80 USD
90 day forward rate of Euro 0.79 USD
90 day European interest rate 4%
90 day U.S interest rate 2.5

Given the information above, discuss if covered interest arbitrage worthwhile for an US investor who has US dollars to invest (assume the investor invests $1,000,000) Explain with calculations.

2. Read the following information to answer the questions d and e

  • Newton Co is a UK based multinational company that has the following expected transactions
  • One month Receipt of $240,000
  • One month Receipt of $140,000
  • Three month Receipt of  $300,000
  • Newton Co’s finance manager has collected the information below
  • Spot rate ($ per £): 1.7820 + 0.0002
  • One month forward rate ($ per £): 1.7829 + 0.0003
  • Three months forward ($ per £): 1.7846 + 0.0004
  • Money market rates for Newton Co:
  Borrowing Deposit
One year sterling interest rate 4.9% 4.6%
One year dollar interest rate 5.4% 5.1%

Assume that it is 1 April now

  1. d) Calculate the expected sterling receipts in one month and in three months using the forward market.

  • Delta bank in Amsterdam quotes USD/EUR as 0.8325 and GBP/USD as 1.3343
  • Alfa Bank in UK FX quotation for GBP/EUR is 1.1267
  • 1 year money market interest rates for EUR are 2% and for GBP 4% (per annum)

Calculate the cost in GBP to Gamma Co of conducting the spot rate FX transaction with Delta Bank or Alfa Bank and which would they use?

If Relative Purchasing Power Parity held what would you expect the GBP/EUR exchange rate to be in 6 months’ time? ( base calculations on a spot GBP/EUR rate of 1.1267

4. Answer and show calculations for the following questions below :

A British company is considering investing in Malaysia due to cheaper labour rates and proximity to raw materials used in production

Capital investment in the project would be Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) 11,000,000. The project would last for 4 years producing annual net operating cash flows of MYR 4 million per year

At the end of the project the assets would be sold at an estimated value of MYR 2 million

In calculating the return the firm will use a GBP weighted average cost of capital (WACC) of 8%

The GBP/MYR exchange rate is 5.5000 and is expected to remain stable through the end of Year 1 but is expected to weaken to 5.75 by the end of year 2, 6.00 in year 3 and 6.25 in year 4

Calculate the expected GBP NVP of the USA project showing all workings out?

The company assesses the probability of NPV calculated in the above answer to be 40% and calculates an alternative scenario forecasting an NPV return of £800,000 with a 60% probability. What is the combined weighted expected return?

How has current legislative and/or economic policy impacted the work you are able to do with the individuals you serve? How important is licensure and/or certification to the work you do?

Informational Interview

There is tremendous value in learning from and networking with community rehabilitation practitioners on “the front lines.” New helping professionals often have many questions, concerns, and anxieties that can be uniquely addressed by individuals in the field. Based on a students’ own professional aspirations (field of choice, i.e. substance abuse, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, peer support, etc.); students will select one professional to meet with and interview in person or virtually . While a list of potential agencies will be available to you, you will identify professionals practicing in your area of interest and will: (a) meet with the professional at their place of practice to learn more about the work they perform; (b) develop at least three (3) substantive questions to be asked of the professional that is directly related to the type of work they perform, and have the interviewee respond to additional questions; and lastly (c), you will write a paper that details the information you gathered and then critiques it (compares and contrasts) based on the information you learned in class and your general understanding of that professional position.

Your 5-page paper should be divided into 4 sections:

Overview of the professional setting and what types of services professionals in this setting provide.
Overview of the information you gathered from the individual you interviewed. This should be presented in a narrative fashion, not Q & A. You should also give a brief introduction to your interviewee, their credentials and professional role.
Critique (compare and contrast of the information gathered versus what you have learned in class and via readings)
Conclude your paper discussing whether or not this interaction has influenced your own professional goals and what you learned that you were previously unaware of by interacting with this professional.

Questions for your professional:

How has current legislative and/or economic policy impacted the work you are able to do with the individuals you serve?
How important is licensure and/or certification to the work you do?
Since you began this position, what has changed in the way individuals are served?
How has ethical practice played a role in your own professional development?
How relevant has cultural competency been to the type of services you are able to provide?
What are your views on research and its relationship to practice?
