Write a report discussing and explaining the causes and remedies of the type of conflict we have seen between Caroline and Nicola.

Case Study

Write a report identifying appropriate psychological theories and explanations addressing the following:
1. a discussion and explanation of the causes and remedies of the type of conflict we have seen between Caroline and Nicola
2. a discussion and explanation of what contributes to successful creative collaborations that could be applied to other athletes at Acro.

The focus is on answering the two points in relation to the information available in the scenario, and your understanding of psychological theory.

Scenario
Acro gymnastics is a team sport whereby gymnasts execute group skills whilst balancing and holding their own and each other’s weight in complex positions. Think of a human pyramid, but much more advanced. Gymnasts choreograph their own routines, and creativity and flair score very high. John Mulhern, Head Coach of Scottish Acro Gymnastics is facing the biggest challenge of his coaching career so far: the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships is in two months, but his biggest hope of a gold medal, superstar team Caroline and Nicola (who are also a couple), are experiencing tension. With such high stakes, John receives permission from British Gymnastics to hire a sports psychologist. Imagine that you are that psychologist and you have received the following email from John. He hopes your advice will not only help Caroline and Nicola, but future partnerships too.

Prepare a memorandum discussing all causes of action against the 911 operator, the EMT and the Emergency Squad.

Legal scenario question, memorandum discussing

Prepare a memorandum discussing all causes of action against the 911 operator, the EMT and the Emergency Squad. No references needed

Alan recently bought his dream vacation home in the mountains, a “fixer-upper” with a deck that jutted out over the river. During the summer and fall he worked on outdoor repairs, including replacing many, but not all, of the rotted railings on the wooden deck. In January, Alan invited his friend Todd, a licensed electrician, to his home for the weekend. They planned for Todd to do some needed indoor wiring and for both of them to get in some skiing.

After working indoors all day, Todd was relaxing on the outdoor deck. When Todd leaned against the railing it felt a little loose and wobbly, but he straddled the railing to get a better view of the icy river. Within thirty seconds, the railing gave way and Todd fell into the water. Alan heard a scream and a crash, raced outside, and saw that the railing had collapsed. As Alan ran down the steps he yelled to his wife to call 911.

Alan jumped into the water but could not rescue Todd. Within ten minutes the Township Volunteer Emergency Squad arrived. The only means of reaching the men was from the river bank. The ambulance did not have any rescue ropes on board, but did have a ladder. One Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Larry, waded into the river with the ladder to try to reach the men, but he tripped and was swept away by the current. Since the ambulance was not equipped with any means of rescue, the second EMT immediately called the 911 operator to ask for the firefighters’ assistance.

The firefighters arrived forty-five minutes later, because the 911 operator had given them the incorrect address. Upon arrival, the firefighters used their 200-foot long ropes and rescued all three men.

All three men suffered permanent physical injury as a result of being in the water for more than thirty minutes. They file suit. They learn during discovery that there is no specific, state-mandated requirement for equipping an ambulance with 200-foot long rescue ropes and that the Emergency Squad receives some funding from the Township.

What roles do activists and journalists play in assuring that corporations are ethical – or at least not evil? How does an educated population fit into activism? College reproduces many aspects of broader society when it’s working – what are those? Why does the government view some activists as terrorists – and others as acceptable?

Movie Summary

Assignment

After watching the film Broken Rainbow – review them – (two pages double-spaced,MLA format for each review) that shows you’re understanding the ethical problems shown in the films.

Do not provide your own synopsis of each film, and do not use outside synopses (plagiarism), such as IMDB.

What happened to the saltwater fish that was found in Lake Michigan? Explain what happened to the survivor fish that swam from the Gulf of Mexico to the freshwater lake.

Osmosis

All cells contain a plasma membrane or cell membrane that forms the boundary of the cell. Among its many functions, it will act as the gatekeeper to regulate what materials can move into and out of the cell.

Water moves easily across this border. Water movement is essential for the cell to maintain homeostasis. The direction of water movement across the cell membrane is determined by the concentration of solute on either side. Water always moves to the side where a higher solute concentration exists. (Another way to think about this is that water will move from a higher water concentration to a lower one to make the concentrations equal on both sides of the membrane.) The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from a lower solute concentration to a higher solute concentration is called osmosis.

In this activity, you will be given a practical example of osmosis in action. You will need to explain what is happening in your mini case study by answering the questions following the story. Use technical biological vocabulary (such as hypotonic, hypertonic, isotonic, and solute concentration) to clearly answer the questions. Do the practice questions before looking at the case study.

Practice Questions:

  1. You have an artificial cell containing 35% glucose placed in a 15% glucose solution.  (Note: the cell is the circle; the rectangle is the solution.)
  2. Which way will the water move?
  3. Will the cell shrink, swell, or stay the same size?
  4. What type of solution is the cell in?
  5. You have an artificial cell containing 12% NaCl placed in a solution that is 15% glucose and 10% NaCl.
  6. Which way will the water move?
  7. Will the cell shrink, swell, or stay the same size?
  8. What type of solution is the cell in?

Case #6 – A Fishy Tale

You read a news release indicating that a species of saltwater fish was found in Lake Michigan. How it got there was a mystery. Unfortunately, the fish has died. In another instance, a saltwater fish was found living in a lake a bit upstream from the Gulf of Mexico. It was assumed that the fish swam from the ocean to a freshwater lake. This fish survived and is doing well in the lake. You wonder why one fish survived and the other did not. (Be sure to include specific biological terms such as hypotonic, isotonic, or hypertonic in your explanation. Also talk about the water relationship between the cells of the fish and the water outside.)

Questions:

  1. What happened to the saltwater fish that was found in Lake Michigan?
  2. Explain what happened to the survivor fish that swam from the Gulf of Mexico to the freshwater lake. (Hint: the journey from the ocean to the lake will take the fish through some brackish water—water that has more salinity than freshwater but less than salt water.)
  3. What would happen to a freshwater fish that suddenly found itself in the Atlantic Ocean? Explain.

What is one of the worst decisions you have had to deal with in the work environment? What was the short term impact? What was the long-term impact?

Business Question

“If the people who make the decisions are the people who will also bear the consequences of those decisions, perhaps better decisions will result.”
John Abrams, The Company We Keep: Reinventing Small Business for People, Community and Place

We have all suffered the effects of poor decision-making by a boss. Often the bad decision was made in haste or without regard to the impact it would have on those who had to live with the decision.

  • What is one of the worst decisions you have had to deal with in the work environment? What was the short term impact? What was the long-term impact?

You are expected to participate during the current week’s discussion. Contact your instructor in cases of emergency or uncontrollable circumstances.

Derive the final expression from the theory section using torque instead of force. What is the net force on the wires in the balance that run parallel to the solenoid?

Physics lab write up

Questions:
1. Derive the final expression from the theory section using torque instead of force.

2. What is the net force on the wires in the balance that run parallel to the solenoid?

3. Devise another way to run this experiment without using a mass on the other end of the balance, but still using a current balance.

4. Why must we wait until the balance is parallel with the table to calculate the magnetic field? If it was balanced (i.e. not moving) but at an angle, could we still find the magnetic field?

How does the reading discuss how the artist’s identity and politics are shaped by their gender, race, sexuality, etc? Identify an interesting or powerful quote/idea from the reading and discuss why you choose this quote, and why you see it as significant.

WEEKLY READING REACTIONS FORMAT GUIDELINES

You will write reading responses during certain weeks that respond to the reading material. Your entries should average 2-3 pages each. Reading reactions entries should be more than just a descriptive summary of the material. Rather, the reading responses will also be a place to reflect on your own thoughts and questions about the specific material at hand. The reading reactions are a means by which you can gauge and give credit for doing the reading/keeping up with course material, so be sure to discuss specific points and issues. Lengths provided are a minimum suggestion.

To receive full credit for your reading reactions, you will need to address each of the following:

  • Each reading must be mentioned in your response:

Example: In Feldstein’s “More Than Just a Jazz Performer”: Nina Simone’s Border Crossing”, the author discusses the ways in which …

  1. Summarize the main points of each assigned reading in about 2-3 paragraphs. (For example, if there are two readings per week, you should have at least 2-3 summarizing paragraphs for each assigned reading). In your summary, make sure to articulate what the author is arguing, and discuss the major findings.

  1. How does the reading discuss how the artist’s identity and politics are shaped by their gender, race, sexuality, etc? Be specific and provide examples. (1-2 paragraphs)

  1. Be able to discuss how the reading material contributes to understanding Black Creative Arts, and in particular how these issues may have shaped the experience of Black women in general. (2-3 sentences)

  1. In your opinion, list the five most important things you learned from the readings for this week. (Bullet points)

  1. Identify an interesting or powerful quote/idea from the reading and discuss why you choose this quote, and why you see it as significant. (Quote and explain the significance in 1-2 sentences)
