View this video of Shirin Neshat’s work on YouTube:

Shirin Neshat created a series of works titled Women of Allah that incorporate text on photographs of Islamic women. Neshat was born and raised in Iran, and she moved to the United States to study art as well as to escape the unrest that was happening in Iran due to the Islamic Revolution. According to Neshat, the focus of her work is “the subject of women in relation to Iranian society and the revolution…” using both black and white photography as well as film. Consider social and political issues that affect you in your culture and region to make that the subject of your work.

  2. Then tell us what type of criticism you believe people would use to view that work you created and why.

There are a number of different types of contemporary art criticism:

  1. Ideological criticism relates the political ideas of art.
  2. Structuralist-based criticism deals with the overall structure of art (formal elements) or the multiple layers of meanings that deconstruct art.
  3. Psychoanalytic criticism deals with the experiences of the individual, in their past, their subconscious mind, or in their social histories.
  4. Feminist criticism deals with gender issues such as oppression of women.

Write a brief, 2-page statement on the role of social work in society, and your expectations and hopes for the future of social work. SOCW 200: Expectations and Hope for the Future of Social Work (10%)

This assignment is designed to help you think about how you envision the role of social work in society. Review the Grand Challenges for Social Work Initiative from the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare which describes more than a dozen Challenges that address significant societal issues. Choose one of these Challenges that you identify with and use it as the foundation for your statement on the profession of social work and its future.

Write a brief, 2-page statement (or longer, not including references pages or the cover page) on the role of social work in society, and your expectations and hopes for the future of social work. Describe where you believe the profession of social work will be going in the next five to 10 years, as it pertains to the Grand Challenge you chose, based on relevant information sources in this area. Share how your personal values align (or not) with this Grand Challenge and how they align (or not) with where you believe social work is heading. Support your discussion of this with a rationale and examples, and include how this aligns with professional social work ethics, upon reviewing and citing the NASW Code of Ethics (included with the Segal et al., 2019 text as well as within the NASW website).

It is very important that this statement is grounded in social work ethics and values, as outlined in the Code of Ethics (provided in our textbook in addition to within the link above).

As with each of our assignments, APA formatting is needed (including a cover page, proper formatting, in-text citations within the first and final times you are including information obtained from outside sources within each paragraph, and properly formatted references). Please review the APA resources and previous feedback in Blackboard for further details on this and as always, feel free to reach out with questions about these resources upon reviewing them, as I am happy to help you.

Meanwhile, as shared in our course announcements, I created this template to help you as well (which should look incredibly similar to what you would otherwise create in response to these assignment instructions using APA formatting):

Justify why this was an appropriate decision and what could happen if an employee consistently makes errors. Write about your comfort level and experiences in writing in a formal style.

Unit 1 Discussion

This unit’s reading includes a list of reasons why writing matters as well as information about formal writing. After reading this, take some time to contemplate the importance of these concepts in securing a job.

Your initial post must include the following:

  • In your first paragraph, consider that you are an employer seeking to hire someone. There are only two applicants whose IT skills and credentials seem equal, but one provided a large project document (in a portfolio) with many grammar errors and an informal style that seems inappropriate. You have decided to hire the person whose application materials were all well written. Justify why this was an appropriate decision and what could happen if an employee consistently makes errors.
  • In your second paragraph, write about your comfort level and experiences in writing in a formal style.
  • Do not use source material for this discussion; use your critical thinking skills.

In responses to others, it would be appropriate to share experiences with writing resumes, cover letters, and/or portfolio documents, either from the applicant or the employer’s viewpoint, or explain other instances in your career so far that required formal writing.

Discussion parameters:

  • Write your initial post in your own words; do not quote or copy from sources.
  • Do not copy the questions into your post.
  • Write an original descriptive subject line for your initial post (do not include the unit number or your name).
  • Write with formal, professional language, as explained in the reading.
  • Work to meet all posting guidelines and expectations.
