Banking System

This assignment asks you to implement a Bank with Accounts, while practicing and demonstrating both basic OOP design and TDD, while using the plugins we set up in week 1 lab. We are expecting you to follow the naming conventions taught in class.

Your assignment is to (using TDD of course) develop a Bank that allows for account management.
Specifically, you can create accounts, deposit money into accounts, and withdraw money from accounts.

There are three different account types:

Checking

Savings

Certificate of Deposit (CD)

All 3 account types are created with:

A unique 8digit ID.
Examples: 12345678, 00000001, 89456185

An APR value from 0 to 10. APRs can have decimal values.

Examples: 0, 0.3, 3, 5.7, 7.9, 9.8, 10.

Checking and Savings accounts are created with a balance of 0 every time. CD accounts are created with a specified balance. That is, if we say to create one with a balance of $1000, its balance will be $1000 when it’s created. CD accounts can’t be created without a specified balance. Similarly, Checking and Savings accounts can’t be created with a specified balance they will always start at $0.

Balances should support decimal values. Creating a CD account with $2005.54 is valid.

Depositing money into an account adds money to the balance in that account. Don’t deposit negative values. Depositing decimal values is supported.

Withdrawing money from an account removes money from the balance in that account. Don’t withdraw negative values. Withdrawing decimal values is supported. Special rule: if you try to withdraw more money than is in the account, the account’s balance goes to 0. For example, if an account has $100 and you withdraw $200 from it, the balance should be $0.

Noting the problems you presented above, what solutions do you have to help protect society? Offer an alternative solution that addresses the issues you noted in the rough draft and avoids the problems you noted above.

Case study

Description

Part I – (this draws on welfare analysis regulation (Ch 4) to improve the argument made in the Rough Draft as well as describe an unintended consequence)

Consider rent control policies in the rental housing market and the negative aspects of this government intervention. In addition to improving your paper based on the feedback you received, add to your previous discussion of the US rental housing market using what you have learned about DWL and welfare analysis; specifically discuss efficiency concerns as a result of the intervention. You may have already discussed DWL in the rough draft, but you should elaborate on that discussion and really focus on what causes the DWL and in what ways is the loss generated, exactly who is impacted and how; give specific examples. Make sure you use multiple different economic terms from key concepts in chapter 4 throughout this part of the paper.

Part II – (this requires you to offer a creative alternate solution to the consequence you described above)

Now put yourself in the role of a social advocate. Noting the problems you presented above, what solutions do you have to help protect society? Offer an alternative solution that addresses the issues you noted in the rough draft and avoids the problems you noted above. Be creative, you are not limited to possible government interventions but should also consider potential interventions from other groups in society.

What amount of ordinary business income is allocated to Jane? What is the amount and character of separately stated items allocated to Jane? What is Jane’s basis in her XYZ Corporation stock at the end of the year?

Tax questions

This year, Reggie’s distributive share from Almonte Partnership includes $8,000 of interest income, $4,000 of dividend income, and $60,000 of ordinary business income.

A. Assume that Reggie materially participates in the partnership. How much of his distributive share from Almonte Partnership is potentially subject to the net investment income tax?
B. Assume that Reggie does not materially participate in the partnership. How much of his distributive share from Almonte Partnership is potentially subject to the net investment income tax?

David would like to organize HOS (a business entity) as either an S corporation or as a corporation (taxed as a C corporation) generating a 12 percent annual before-tax return on a $444,000 investment. David’s marginal tax rate is 24 percent and the corporate tax rate is 21 percent. David’s marginal tax rate on individual capital gains and dividends is 15 percent. HOS will pay out its after-tax earnings every year to either its members or its shareholders. If HOS is taxed as an S corporation, David’s business income allocation would be subject to a 3.8 percent net investment income tax (he is a passive investor in the business), and the business income allocation would qualify for the deduction for qualified business income. (Round your intermediate calculations and final answer to whole number dollar amount.)

  1. How much would David keep after taxes if HOS is organized as either an S corporation or a C corporation?
  2. What are the overall tax rates (combined owner and entity level) if HOS is organized as either an S corporation or a C corporation?

J&J, LLC, was in its third year of operations when J&J decided to expand the number of members from two, A and B, with equal profits and capital interests, to three members, A, B, and C. The third member, C, will contribute her financial expertise to the LLC in exchange for a one-third capital interest in J&J. Given the balance sheet below reflecting the financial position of J&J on the date member C is admitted, what are the tax consequences to members A, B, and C, and to J&J, when C receives her capital interest? If, instead, member C receives a one-third profits interest, what would be the tax consequences to members A, B, and C, and to J&J?

c. What is Jane’s basis in her XYZ Corporation stock at the end of the year?

Analyze resulting series using sample autocorrelations, sample partial autocorrelations etc. to understand the correlation structure of the model.

Fitting several possible time series models to a given dataset

The goal of this project is to fit several possible time series models to a given dataset , select one that is preferable using model diagnostics procedures and then perform a forecasting task.

ˆ Remember that the analysis of the dataset starts with a time plot and, possibly, some scatterplots. Based on them, you may want to consider a deterministic trend model with a time series error process or a straightforward time series model with a possibly constant mean.

ˆ Your next stage should consist of looking at whether the (possibly detrended) data process seems stationary or not. If not, consider applying appropriate transformations to the data to make it stationary.

ˆ Next, you will need to analyze resulting series using sample autocorrelations, sample partial autocorrelations etc. to understand the correlation structure of the model. At this stage, you should be able to pick up a few possible ARIMA (p,d,q) model candidates.

ˆ For all resulting candidate models, perform appropriate diagnostics procedures. Remember that you always have to start with the residual analysis. If necessary, you may also consider overfitting as a second diagnostic tool.

ˆ The final step of your analysis will be forecasting. Please remember to include a plot of the original series with the addition of forecasted values and prediction limits. Include other plots from the model selection and diagnostic stage on an as-needed basis: enough to illustrate your thought flow but not an overwhelming flood of unnecessary plots.

You will be using the dataset called robot that is also included with the TSA package. It consists of 324 observations. The measurements are expressed as deviations from a target position. The robot is put through this planned set of exercises in the hope that its behavior is repeatable and, therefore, predictable. Forecast five values ahead and obtain 95% forecast limist.

Do Sophia and Hal have valid grounds for asking Jack to sign a non compete agreement’?

Sophia and Hal

Questions

1. Do Sophia and Hal have valid grounds for asking Jack to sign a non compete agreement’?

2. Assume Jack signs the non compete agreement. Two years later, he opens a restaurant five miles away. If Hal then sues for breach of the non compete, what arguments might Jack raise?

3. Are Hal and Sophia’s demands reasonable’? Do you think the recipes constitute trade secrets?

4. What compromise might be met that would be legal, ethical, and fair’? Can you think of a business solution that would help Jack, Hal, and Sophia resolve their differences?

Discuss to what extent Browne’s “new model” created the conditions for these accidents and was this model appropriate to the industry in which BP competed? What structure is used in your organization and is this model appropriate to the industry in which you work?

MGT510: Strategy Planning: Organizational Structure

Read Case 6: BP: Organizational Structure and Management Systems (R.M. Grant, Contemporary Strategy Analysis, 11th ed. Wiley, 2022).

Remember that a case study is a puzzle to be solved, so before reading and discussing the specific case questions below, develop your proposed solution by following these five steps:

Read the case study to identify the key issues and underlying issues. These issues are the principles and concepts of the course module which apply to the situation described in the case study.

Record the facts from the case study which are relevant to the principles and concepts of the module. The case may have extraneous information not relevant to the current course module. Your ability to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant information is an important aspect of case analysis, as it will inform the focus of your answers.

  • Describe in some detail the actions that would address or correct the situation.

Complete this initial analysis and then read the discussion questions. Typically, you will already have the answers to the questions but with a broader consideration. At this point, you can add the details and/or analytical tools required to solve the case.

The disastrous explosions at BP’s Texas City refinery and its Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico have drawn attention to the organizational structure and management system created at BP by former CEO John Browne.

  • Discuss to what extent Browne’s “new model” created the conditions for these accidents and was this model appropriate to the industry in which BP competed?
  • What structure is used in your organization and is this model appropriate to the industry in which you work?
  • Discuss the concepts, principles, and theories from your textbook. Cite your textbooks (Link for textbook). and cite any other sources if appropriate.

Your initial post should address all components of the question with a 500 word limit.

Write a section in which you use the theory or principle to either understand or solve the problem (~1 page). Describe a previous attempt to address the problem, and discuss whether it was effective or ineffective. Include at least one reference.

Social Psychology (PSYC 332)

This third application paper follows the same format as the first two, but choose a different problem, and a different social psychological theory. Your assignment is to write a short (~3 pages, or 900 words) APAstyle paper in which you discuss a pressing social problem, summarize a social psychological theory, and describe how this theory could be (or has been) applied to help understand or solve this problem. These papers are worth 50 points each.

Start your paper by describing a pressing social problem (~1 page) and provide at least one reference. In summarizing the nature of the problem, make sure to link the cause of the problem to human behavior. Be as specific as possible. For example, rather than talking about “environmental problems”, it’s better to focus on just one problem such as the availability of fresh water, and even better, the availability of fresh drinking water in California. Make sure to link the problem to human behavior, for example the large amount of fresh water that is used for outdoor irrigation, such as watering grass.

As a starting point, here’s a short list of possible problems, but feel free to choose others that are not included in the list below:
Environmental problems, such as climate change, species extinction, depletion of natural materials, water pollution, overpopulation, …
Poverty and economic disparities, prejudice, discrimination, obesity, homelessness
Educational disparities, unemployment, racial and gender inequality
Violence and aggression, bullying
Conflicts in relationships, divorce, child abuse, sex trafficking, dating violence
Substance use and abuse, vaping, smoking, binge drinking, impaired driving

Second, discuss a social psychology theory or principle (~1 page). You’re free to draw on any theory or principle discussed in class, or in your course readings. Make sure to describe the details of the theory, and include at least one reference. Examples of social psychological theories from this section of the course include: conformity, normative beliefs, obedience, social identity theory, persuasion, elaboration likelihood model, sleeper effect, attitude inoculation, reactance, compliance, selfdetermination theory, mindset, entitativity, social facilitation, social loafing, deindividuation, ostracism, wise interventions, ostracism, group think.

Finally, write a section in which you use the theory or principle to either understand or solve the problem (~1 page). It’s also appropriate here to describe a previous attempt to address the problem, and discuss whether it was effective or ineffective. Include at least one reference.

To summarize: Your paper should be ~3 pages in length, with at least 3 references. The paper should be written in APA style. Each paper will be worth 50 points, and will be graded based on five criteria: organization and clarity, APAstyle, social issue, social psychological theory, and application. The grading rubric that I’ll use to score these papers is available in Cougar Courses
