LEGISLATION GRID AND TESTIMONY/ADVOCACY STATEMENT

As a nurse, how often have you thought to yourself, If I had anything to do about it, things would work a little differently? Increasingly, nurses are beginning to realize that they do, in fact, have a role and a voice.

Many nurses encounter daily experiences that motivate them to take on an advocacy role in hopes of impacting policies, laws, or regulations that impact healthcare issues of interest. Of course, doing so means entering the less familiar world of policy and politics. While many nurses do not initially feel prepared to operate in this space effectively, the reward is the opportunity to shape and influence future health policy.

To Prepare:

  • Select a bill that has been proposed (not one that has been enacted) using the congressional websites provided in the Learning Resources.
  • The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Legislation Grid; 1-page Legislation Testimony/Advocacy Statement)
  • Be sure to add a title page, an introduction, purpose statement, and a conclusion. This is an APA paper.

Part 1: Legislation Grid

Based on the health-related bill (proposed, not enacted) you selected, complete the Legislation Grid Template. Be sure to address the following:

Determine the legislative intent of the bill you have reviewed.
Identify the proponents/opponents of the bill.
Identify the target populations addressed by the bill.
Where in the process is the bill currently? Is it in hearings or committees?

Part 2: Legislation Testimony/Advocacy Statement

Based on the health-related bill you selected, develop a 1-page Legislation Testimony/Advocacy Statement that addresses the following:

Advocate a position for the bill you selected and write testimony in support of your position.
Explain how the social determinants of income, age, education, or gender affect this legislation.
Describe how you would address the opponent to your position. Be specific and provide examples.
At least 2 outside resources and 2-3 course specific resources are used.

What are you defining as your mother tongue(s)? Why? How does this impact who you are and how you express yourself? What are some examples of how your language interacts with the world around you?

Mother Tongues

Language: “the principal method of human communication, consisting of words used in a structured and conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing, or gesture; a system of communication used by a particular country or community” (Google).

Mother tongue: “the language which a person has grown up speaking from early childhood” (Google).

Background for assignment: With these two definitions in mind, we all utilize various forms of language throughout our lifetime; though, have you ever considered how this helps shape your identity?

The Assignment: What is your mother tongue, and why or how does it help shape your identity? To write this essay, please make sure to address the following ideas:

• What are you defining as your mother tongue(s)? Why?

• How does this impact who you are and how you express yourself?

• What are some examples of how your language interacts with the world around you?

• What value does a mother tongue bring to society?

• Are there any obstacles preventing your mother tongue from freedom of expression?

• What are some ideas about language and/or mother tongues from others that you tend to agree with? Disagree with? Why?

Craft a letter to the South Carolina state representative or to a National representative to express your thoughts related to the community issue(s) relating to a specific health care concern.

There are many ways to craft a letter to an elected representative, but you are provided you with two websites (below) that share nice information related to writing letters to public officials. You will see the APA site includes email and letter templates. Please use the letter templates. Also, please do not copy the language contained in the templates verbatim. Rather, use the letter templates as your guide to correctly format and structure your specific letter content. As always, please be sure to use appropriate grammar and mechanics within your letter. use in-text citations is not required, but you do need to list any sources used within the body of the letter in APA format either in the footnote of the letter or on a separate References page.
