What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired.

Assignment: The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker

The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar?

Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.

In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with an infographic (graphic that visually represents information, data, or knowledge. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly.) to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.

To Prepare:

  • Review the concepts of informatics as presented in the Resources.
  • Reflect on the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.
  • Consider how knowledge may be informed by data that is collected/accessed.

The Assignment:

  • Explain the concept of a knowledge worker.
  • Define and explain nursing informatics and highlight the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.
  • Develop a simple infographic to help explain these concepts.
  • Your PowerPoint should Include the hypothetical scenario you originally shared in the Discussion Forum. Include your examination of the data that you could use, how the data might be accessed/collected, and what knowledge might be derived from that data. Be sure to incorporate feedback received from your colleagues’ responses.

By Day 7 of Week 2

Identify component of intelligence you consider most critical and why.

1. Take the position of one of the theorists within the text chapter indicate the concept of intelligence; Identify component of intelligence you consider most critical and why.

How does your family express its problems or limitations (by anger, attacking the outside world, withdrawing from the outside world, etc.)?

Successful therapists are alert and pay close attention to the unfolding narratives of the families with whom they work. To gain experience in listening to narrative developments and in understanding your own family stories and how you respond to and assess stories of the families you see in practice, please respond honestly to the following items as you consider the narrative of your own family (Excerpted and modified from Goldenberg, Stanton, & Goldenberg, 2020).
1. How does your family express its problems or limitations (by anger, attacking the outside world, withdrawing from the outside world, etc.)?
2. What roles do you find the family has assigned to individual members (such as “brother is the smart one,” sister is the athlete,” or father is the depressed one,” etc.) Please discuss your own role.
3. Have any losses (of a home, job, family members through death, etc.) affected the way your family functions? Please describe.
4. Have gender or sexual identity issues been important in your family narrative (gay parents or siblings, transgender family member, etc.) Please discuss/describe.
5. How important is achievement (monetary, social class, education, athletic status, etc.) as a value to your family. How do you know this?
6. Does your family strongly identify with an ethnic, racial, or religious heritage?
7. Describe an important family ritual and explain how it influences the family’s appreciation and understanding of itself.
8. Has your family retained its socioeconomic position over generations? What is your evidence?
Paper should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font in Times Roman. Page limit is 5-6 pages, FIRM! APA formatting requires heading for each response, references, etc. Please refer to an APA manual online on at the library for correct/professional formatting.

Discuss how the technical properties of the WPPSI–III differ from those of the WISC–IV.

1. Discuss how the technical properties of the WPPSI–III differ from those of the WISC–IV.
2. Discuss the following two-part question: When should young children be given an intelligence test? What would results be used for?

Discuss the process by which you decided upon the variables to include in your dataset.

Consider the dataset that you created last week. Review the variables/data through the lens of the readings provided in chapters 6 & 7 – particularly the concept of the “want versus should selves.”
Discuss the process by which you decided upon the variables to include in your dataset. Do the variables  represent data points that you “want” to analyze or know more about? Or……does your dataset actually have information that the firm “should” be reviewing? In other words, were the variables that you selected influenced by your own internal bias/conflict between what you “want” to see/analyze, versus what you “should” be measuring? Did you select variables that were “conventional?” Organizations often analyze “conventional” data metrics because these represent the industry norm, as opposed to what they actually “should” be measuring in alignment with their specific mission. Ironically, “conventional” data is often the most “convenient” – thus the same root.

How might you convince stakeholders that a new analytics system/process was needed?

After reviewing chapter 7 of the text, prepare a 350-word (minimum) essay describing how the “escalation of commitment” has influenced the data collection, measurement, and analysis process at your own organization. Has this helped or hindered the decision-making efforts and strategic planning at your firm? If you were responsible for analyzing the performance data at your organization and recognized that the metrics being used were irrelevant and/or antiquated, how might you convince stakeholders that a new analytics system/process was needed? If the organization has already invested resources to evaluate “conventional” metrics (i.e. escalation of commitment), what would be your strategy for helping the firm move from a “conventional” (convenient) analytics process toward something more innovative (unconventional and/or inconvenient)?

How would you determine how to prioritize your tasks?

You are a newly hired operations manager for Hospital XYZ. You are required to:
Review the current hiring practices for nurses working in the emergency room department.
Investigate recent patient complaints concerning bad bedside manner from nurses in labor and delivery.
Review financial requests for Environmental Services to purchase new buffers to wax floors.
Review Information Technology’s concerns regarding a possible information breach.
Review request for implementation of new software in the radiology department.
Develop a mind map to create a visual document to determine your approach to these tasks. How would you determine how to prioritize your tasks? Who are the stakeholders in each of these scenarios? Is there a need for project management? If so why?
