Describe the impact you believe each story had on the culture and the people who produced it and explain which of the three stories you enjoyed the most.

Once you have view the Joseph Campbell video and Course Video #1, you will need to read the three stories that have been provided for you: the Enuma Elish (Mesopotamian Creation Story); Odin and Ymir (Norse Creation Story); The Origin of Japan and Her People (Japanese Creation Story); and The Buffalo Wife (Blackfoot Myth). After you have read and analyzed each story, write a 2.5-3 page paper in which you thoroughly explain how the four functions of mythology are illustrated in three of the stories – you MUST use The Buffalo Wife and the Enuma Elish, but you can choose between the other two. After you explain how EACH function operates in EACH story, describe the impact you believe each story had on the culture and the people who produced it and explain which of the three stories you enjoyed the most. Remember to follow the CWI structure in your writing. Video #1 will be sent by email Joseph Campbell – Myth as a Mirror for the Ego: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgOUxICCHoA Joseph Campbell on The Rapture of Being Alive https://vimeo.com/62378811

Choose a place, institution, event, occurrence, tv show and “make it strange”

Inspired by Horace Miners “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema” you are to engage in your own process of “making the familiar strange”. Choose a place, institution, event, occurrence, tv show and “make it strange”

the method is to approach something we all know and understand as if we were cultural outsiders and no preconceived understandings or context for what we were witnessing. Use colorful, descriptive language to paint a picture in the audiences mind. Your subject or method can be political or provide social commentary as Miner did with the health care system, psychiatry, and the objectification of women.

This should be a well thought out paper. Make careful choice of words (remember S/W Hypothesis)

Papers should be approx. two full pages (1000-1200 words) in length (no headings).

Can we accept opposing views/values/beliefs as equally important, real, and valid without changing our own views/values/beliefs?

The purpose of discussion prompts is to create an opportunity to express your own thoughts and share your experiences. Please answer the following prompt from your own perspective and support your response with at least one clear example from your personal experience. Your response should be in short-answer/paragraph form.

After submitting your prompt, you should read the prompts of at least two classmates and respond to their prompts in a meaningful way. This can be accomplished by building on similarities, offering alternative experiences, providing support, and asking questions.

Submit your own discussion prompt by creating a new thread, and submit responses to your classmates by replying to their threads.

1) Can we accept opposing views/values/beliefs as equally important, real, and valid without changing our own views/values/beliefs?

Identify the measurement/control mechanisms you would utilize to determine if the change management process is working effectively.

The final critical thinking assignment for this course requires a comprehensive Change Management Process, including its origination and implementation. To complete this project, address the following:

●Choose a Middle Eastern organization in which you are currently working, or with which you are familiar. Provide a brief description of the organization, including its history, number of employees, products/services, mission/vision, strategies, etc.

●Discuss the problem or issue confronting the organization. Why is there a need to change (e.g., falling profits, low morale, challenges recruiting talented employees, etc.)?

●Assess the principle reasons for the organization’s problem or issue. What is the root cause and what are other causes of the problem/issue?

●Identify the intended change you propose for the organization. Detail the reasons for the change, including any research you conducted that led you to this recommendation (for instance, similar organizations in a similar situation followed this strategy, or studies indicated this was the preferred solution for other organizations in a similar situation).

●Identify a plan to implement the change. Be clear about the steps or processes that you propose to implement this change, including any resources which may be needed throughout the process.

●Identify the measurement/control mechanisms you would utilize to determine if the change management process is working effectively. Also, include any contingency plansyou would propose if/when the plan is not implemented as intended.

●Finally, offer a brief statement about what you learned from completing this project and how your research in this course has affected your perspective/perception of change

Which type of unsupportive messages do you think has the potential to separate people the most?

Answer the following questions after reading the assigned chapter. Answers should be supported by references from the assigned reading, include supporting examples, and should be in short-answer/paragraph form. Your answers should be detailed enough that anyone could evaluate your work. To submit your work, click on the linked title, create a thread, type your answers, and submit them in the forum.
1.Think of two words that have strong connotations for you. How does your connotation differ from the denotation? How might your connotation differ from another person’s?
2.Which type of unsupportive messages do you think has the potential to separate people the most? Why? Which one do you have the most difficulty avoiding (directing toward others)? Why?
3.Identify something you learned about bias related to one of the five cultural identities that you didn’t know before. What can you do now to be more aware of how verbal communication can reinforce cultural biases?
4.When someone sends you a mixed message in which the verbal and nonverbal messages contradict each other, which one do you place more meaning on? Why?
5.Many people do not think of time as an important part of our nonverbal communication. Provide an example of how chronemics sends nonverbal messages in academic settings, professional settings, and personal settings.
6.List some nonverbal skills that you think you need to work on and explain what you could do to make improvements.

Define your two chosen perspectives and briefly discuss the differences of each approach.

After reviewing the case below, choose two perspectives (neuroscience, humanistic, cognitive, psychodynamic or behavioral) to create a short dialogue between two psychologists discussing Sara’s behavior. Feel free to be creative in your dialogue! Define your two chosen perspectives and briefly discuss the differences of each approach. What was one missing in your dialogue from the case that the other helped to explain?
For example, what would a psychodynamic psychologist say about Sara’s behavior versus a cognitive psychologist? Your dialogue might look something like this:
Psychodynamic Psychologist: Sara seems to be exhibiting these behaviors as a result of unconscious thoughts and conflicts she may not be aware of.
Cognitive Psychologist: That could be true! But I think a possible cause of Sara’s anxiety could stem from the way she thinks about the world around her. Her thinking is distorted and we should work to change that.
Psychodynamic Psychologist: Hmm… Sara’s parents did get a divorce when she was in high school, she could have possibly repressed those feelings that are now coming to the surface from her own recent divorce.
Cognitive Psychologist: Yes, but we are still not getting at the root of the way she thinks and processes information. She excessively worries about everything, not just her parent’s divorce and her own.
Case
Sara is 35 year-old woman currently struggling with increasing pressure at work and a recent divorce among many other things in her life. At the urging of her friends and family, she sought counseling and was diagnosed with Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Sara has a tendency to worry excessively about her children, money, friends, cat, and just about everything else where other people might not find a reason to worry. At work, she has trouble concentrating and is finding it difficult to perform at her best. Her boss is putting more pressure on her to perform better and meet sales goals for the quarter. In general, Sara feels like she is often on edge, tense, exhausted and is very irritable, which has impacted her everyday life. The amount of stress and anxiety Sara is experiencing in her life is also contributing to her depression. She feels as though she is in a vicious cycle she can’t escape.
When Sara was in middle school, her parents argued a lot and she often heard them talking about divorce. In high school, Sara’s parents finally followed through and divorced, which made Sara feel very alone and not in control of her own life. She said that she still feels that she is not in control, worries often, and can’t control how she feels, despite her attempts.
Be sure to make connections between your ideas and conclusions and the research, concepts, terms, and theory we are discussing this week.

Write a report on a SEC’s enforcement case against a CEO and CFO for violations of SOX requirements.

The SEC’s enforcement division investigates public companies for violations of securities laws and regulations.  The Sarbanes Oxley Act mandates that the SEC prescribe the rules for public companies to follow regarding their reports of internal controls over financial reporting. Now that you are familiar with those rules from reading SOX sections 404 and 302 and the SEC Management’s Guidance, your task is to research and write a report on a SEC’s enforcement case against a CEO and CFO for violations of SOX requirements. Your case is the SEC investigation of CEO Marc Sherman and CFO Edward L. Cummings of QSGI Inc.

Requirements:

  • Prepare a 2 page report summarizing the violations and describing the outcome and consequences of the case. The report should be single spaced and 12 font. You should use in text citations and include the references in the footnotes. To start your research find:
  • the SEC’s press release concerning the SOX violations
  • the SEC’s order against Sherman and Cummings

You may also use articles written in sources such as the Wall Street Journal or other reputable business press.

What innovations have created the new and emerging media that you use today?

In a 750-1,000 word paper (typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, using MLA or APA in-text citations (Note: the word limit does not include your separate bibliography for the paper), think about the following assignment. What innovations have created the new and emerging media that you use today? Pick one possible innovation and make a compelling case for it. Base your writing and reasoning on the structure and example set by your assigned James W. Carey chapter on “Technology and Ideology.” I will attach this reading and you must read it and use it to write this paper.

Prepare a flowchart depicting the sales to cash collection and reporting processes for Crazy Jay’s Restaurant Chain.

To meet the requirements in Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, management must have documentation that describes the design of controls over relevant financial statement assertions.  In many cases, management is creating flowcharts of its financial reporting systems to provide that design documentation.

Requirements

  1. You have been asked to prepare a flowchart depicting the sales to cash collection and reporting processes for Crazy Jay’s Restaurant Chain. If your last name begins with M-S, you will prepare PART A. If your last name begins with T-Z, you will prepare PART B. Note: You will want to read both parts to gain a full understanding of the process.
  2. To produce a professional looking flowchart, you will prepare your flowchart using Microsoft Visio flowcharting software. This software is used by most of the accounting firms and you’ll want some first-hand experience with using it.  This software is loaded on all the MAC lab machines and Nelson Hall labs in the basement.  You can also use it at home via the NCSU VCL (virtual computing lab). You cannot use PowerPoint or Word to do this.  Please use Visio.
  3. As you prepare your flowchart, you want to make sure that the reader is able to follow your flowchart step-by-step (see “Overview of Business Processes and Visio” video posted on Moodle). You don’t want any “dead ends” that fail to describe where the reader must go to next.   Remember to depict each process clearly and in sufficient detail without overloading any symbols with text that exceeds the symbol size. Also include annotated risks and controls throughout the process where appropriate (see “KMPG Flowcharting Implementation Guide” posted on Moodle).
  4. The video from class contain the detailed instructions on how to use Visio. Once you are in Visio, you will find pull-down menu options to select the flowcharting stencils (the symbols that you can drag and drop). When you are finished, save your VISIO file and then ALSO export your file to create a PDF version. Submit your files to Moodle. Note you should have 2 files (.vsdx and .pdf)
