Discuss the representation of the women in William Wellman’s The Public Enemy, whether it is Tom’s mother, the nightclub “pickup” girls, or the upper class Gwen.

The Public Enemy (1931)

  1. In William Wellman’s seminal Warner Bros. gangster film, The Public Enemy, we find a masculine triangle, with the 3 points of this masculine triangle being Mike Powers, Matt Doyle, and Tom Powers. Discuss the role of this triangular set of male relationships and its connection to the theme and message of the film.
  2. Discuss the representation of the women in William Wellman’s The Public Enemy, whether it is Tom’s mother, the nightclub “pickup” girls, or the upper class Gwen. You could structure your essay in terms of comparisons/contrasts (e.g. the nightclub girls/Gwen, ma/Gwen, Gwen/Paddy Ryan’s girlfriend–you are free to choose).

  1. Compare and contrast Tom Powers and Charles Kane as “self-made men.”

What do these two films say about this quintessential American archetype?

  1. Find and watch one of the other two seminal Warner Bros. gangster films of the early 1930s, Little Caesar (1931) directed by Mervin LeRoy or Scarface (1932) directed by Howard Hawks. Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the movie you have chosen (i.e. EITHER LeRoy’s OR Hawks’ film) with Wellman’s The Public Enemy.

  1. Read the articles “The Era of the Gangster Film” from the American Experience website and Paul Whitington’s “How the great depression inspired Hollywood’s golden age”, which is taken from the Irish Independent. Then write an essay in which you use both as joint platform sources for discussing William Wellman’s The Public Enemy.

Citizen Kane (1941)

  1. Discuss Welles’ use of a layered, perspectival narrative structure in Citizen Kane. What is the artistic and thematic purpose and effect of having Kane’s story be told—or rather re-told—from a wide array of divergent, and conflicting, points of view?

  1. Discuss Welles’ groundbreaking use of deep focus in Citizen Kane. How does Welles employ this new feature of film language in service of the film’s theme?

  1. Compare and contrast Keaton’s cinematic innovations and those of Welles. I would narrow down and focus your attention on one or two innovations from each film.

  1. Read the essay “’Citizen Kane’ at 70: The Legacy of the Film and its Director” by David W. Brown, which is taken from The Atlantic. Then write an essay in which you use the essay as a platform source for discussing Welles’ groundbreaking film.

Double Indemnity (1944)

  1. When French film critics coined the term “film noir” to refer to a pervasive “dark mood” in American movies, specifically those made in the mid/late-1940s, they had in mind the use of shadow and lighting in these films as a feature of their style and “look.” But they were also drawing attention to the metaphoric and symbolic connotations of this use of shadow and lighting, and what those connotations seemed to be suggesting about the nature of the “American Dream.” Discuss the use of shadow and lighting in Billy Wilder’s classic film noir Double Indemnity, and how this feature of its mise-en-scene and its shot compositions is integral to the thematic meaning of the film, as it is developed through a series of recurrent symbols, tropes, and visual motifs.

  1. Discuss Billy Wilder’s use of the flashback structure and voice-over in Double Indemnity. What is gained by this plot device? How does it relate to the theme?

  1. Compare and contrast the use of big city locations in Wellman’s The Public Enemy (Chicago) and in Wilder’s Double Indemnity (Los Angeles).

  1. Find and watch Lawrence Kasdan’s classic neo-noir film Body Heat (1981). Write an essay in which you compare and contrast Kasdan’s film with Wilder’s film noir classic. By use of this comparison and contrast seek to point out the stylistic/thematic elements in Kasdan’s film that qualify it to be classified as an example of a “neo-noir” film.

  1. Read this essay by David Brodky “’Film Noir’: The Elusive Genre”, which is taken from The New Yorker:. Then write an essay in which you use the essay as a platform source for discussing Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity. How, for instance, does Wilder’s film exhibit the “elusive” qualities Brodky discusses in his essay?

Identify the article’s premise, significant points in support of the premise, and the significance of those points to the course and/or the field.

Locate an article in the CSU Online Library that focuses on managing conflict in an organization through communication. The article must be clearly related to the course content and have the potential to contribute significant analysis and substantial engagement with the course topic.
For this assignment, you will need to accurately identify the article’s premise, significant points in support of the premise, and the significance of those points to the course and/or the field. You need to present an insightful and thorough analysis of the article with strong arguments and evidence. Your interpretation will need to be both reasonable and compelling. You will need to apply course concepts in your analysis.
As you write the review, be certain to analyze the type of conflict discussed in the article. Use the classifications discussed in the Unit III Lesson (Rahim’s functional outcomes and Rahim’s dysfunctional outcomes) in your analysis. Be certain to suggest communication techniques to manage functional conflict or, alternately, communication techniques to resolve dysfunctional conflict.
Along with the article being reviewed, you will need to reference at least two peer-reviewed sources. Use the standard five-paragraph format (introduction/body/conclusion). APA format should be used. The critical review should be a minimum of two pages in length. Content, organization, and grammar/mechanics will be evaluated.

-Book reports are informative reports that discuss a book from an objective stance. The focus of the book report is to both summarize the book and to provide an evaluation of it. Your book reports should focus primarily on giving an account of the thesis, and/or main idea of the work. It should offer a brief description of the text’s key points and provide a short appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of the work. The purpose of the report is to critically evaluate the text, not just inform the readers about it. Determine what kind of balance to strike between your summary information and your evaluation. Deal with the most important or interesting issues in the book. You will not be able to cover every idea. What ideas did you agree or disagree with? What other things might the author have considered?

-Things to look for as you read
Main Ideas: What is the main idea of the work? What did you learn that you did not know before? What makes it good, different, or interesting for you?
Arguments: What support does the author give for her findings? Does the work fulfill its purpose? Does it support its arguments?
Quotes: What quotes stand out? What parts did you like best?
Your Evaluation: Choose a few points to discuss about the book. What worked well for you? What important ideas does the book introduce, and how effective are they?

Prepare a single, stand-alone paragraph (not exceeding 200 words) on your research topic.

Topic: Climate change modelling
Description: Predicting future climates can be complex, as we can not simply extrapolate these from past climates. To ascertain future climates models need to incorporate all of the nonlinear processes (i.e. range and interconnectedness of climate drivers) under any future scenario. Global Climate Models (GCMs) are mathematical models that rely on the laws of physics. Climate models are generally robust, with uncertainties arising due to unknowable or ranging parameterisations. GCMs predict future climate scenarios and detail the management of natural resources, infrastructure and disaster mitigation under these future scenarios.

Task: Prepare a single, stand-alone paragraph (not exceeding 200 words) on your research topic. Your standalone paragraph should be written in either first or third person and include:
Background: As an introduction to your topic (or why this research question is being asked).
Clearly stated research question or statement.
Draft of proposed scope for your research topic (i.e. what is included or exempt from your research topic, and why).
Overarching importance of this topic in a broader scientific context.
Citing of at least two primary articles published between 2016 and present.
Reference list formatted to the Undergraduate Research in Science Practice and Communication (UR-SPC: A guide for authors).
PLEASE WRITE THE PROPOSAL USING THIS TOPIC!!!

Identify 10 terms that are important for all healthcare professionals to understand.

Identify 10 terms that are important for all healthcare professionals to understand.

Explain these 10 terms in a way a non-medical person could understand.

Write a 500- to 750-word summary that describes the importance of understanding and using appropriate health care medical terminology in your current or future career.

Cite any peer-reviewed, scholarly, or similar references to support your assignment.

Discuss in 100-150 words your current understanding of disability based on the Social Security definition and the other definitions you found online.

Go to the website http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/ and click on “General Information.” There, you will find the legal “Definition of Disability” as well as the discussions of included terminology that follow. After reading about the Social Security definition, please search the web for other definitions of disability and disability studies. The first part of your assignment will be to discuss these various definitions and develop one of your own.

Next, go back to the Social Security website and browse through the “Adult Listings (Part A)” and “Childhood Listings (Part B).” Get a feel for how this important government program defines the various impairments in the listing book–what signs, symptoms, and laboratory findings are required in order for the government to determine a claimant disabled based on a particular impairment.

The famous Social Security Blue Book through which you have been browsing is an important tool in the disability determination process. For the purpose of this class, we will use this book, also known as the Listing of Impairments, to select topics for the upcoming three research papers. Select any topic (disability) from the website to analyze this semester (see here and here) https://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/AdultListings.htm. Make sure to pick a specific disability and refer to it by name.

Read through the information about some of the impairments that interest you. Then go to the library’s website and begin doing some preliminary research. Locate and skim through some articles on various topics related to the impairments you have chosen. When you have found a topic that interests you AND located some research topics on the subject, you are ready for this week’s assignment, which is in two parts:

Define disability Discuss in 100-150 words your current understanding of disability based on the Social Security definition and the other definitions you found online.
Defend your topic choice In at least 250 words, discuss the impairment you have chosen to study in the course (be specific–ONE of the impairments listed above). Why have you chosen this impairment? What are some of the possible research topics–in all three disciplines (natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities)–you have discovered in your preliminary research? What would you like to learn about the impairment, the people who are disabled by this impairment, and the cultural implications of this impairment? What fictional works are you familiar with that treat the impairment?
