What trends do you see converging now, and how do these shape customer demand today and into the future?

All opportunities start with an idea. We find the ideas that most often lead to successful businesses have two key characteristics. First, they are something that the entrepreneur is truly passionate about. Second, the idea is a strong opportunity as measured on the opportunity checklist. To be sure of having a strong opportunity, entrepreneurs need a deep understanding of their customers. Better opportunities will have lots of customers currently (market size) with the potential for even more customers in the future (market is growing). Furthermore, these customers will buy the product frequently and pay a premium price for it (strong margins). Thus, entrepreneurs need to be students of the marketplace.

Address the following questions:

What trends do you see converging now, and how do these shape customer demand today and into the future?
Of these trends, which would you invest in or be part of as an entrepreneur and why?

Locked Out of the Process
1. First, please familiarize yourself with the components of Strategic Management.
2. Review the following scenario:
Alex Parker is the quality director at CompuTech, Inc. He is in a middle-management position. CompuTech’s senior executives have announced that they intend to hire a strategic planning consultant to develop a plan for the company. Planning will begin in about 2 months and will take place in the conference center of a local resort and will involve only executive-level managers and the consultant.
Parker has several ideas he would like to propose. In addition, he wants to ensure that quality is treated as a strategic issue during the planning process. Unfortunately, Parker and his fellow middle managers have not been invited to participate. They are locked out of the process. Unfortunately, Parker and his fellow middle managers have not been invited to participate. They are locked out of the process.
Parker believes that the following should be maintained, as he understands that excluding these components/entities can dramatically affect the overall well-being of the organization and should be treated as a strategic issue during the planning process:
• Quality, inclusive of the individual worker, manager, and organization.
• Quality, inclusive of maintaining an ethical environment as it applies in a total quality environment.
• Quality, inclusive of trust, values, and integrity.
For this case, please discuss:
• Provide a synopsis of Strategic Management.
• What do you think of CompuTech’s approach to strategic planning?
o Would you change the process in any way?
o If so, outline how and what steps you would take to modify the process, present it, and implement the new process?
o Describe the strategic planning process including the SWOT analysis and how to develop the vision, mission, guiding principles, broad strategic objectives, and specific tactics (action plan).
• If the process remains as it is, how can Parker get his ideas included–please discuss in detail each of his components on quality?
• Prepare a SWOT analysis:
o Over including middle management.
o Over not including middle management.
• Discuss your projected outcomes for both scenarios-please include:
• Distinguish between partnering and strategic alliances and provide examples of innovative alliances/partnerships and describe the concepts of internal partnering, partnering with suppliers, partnering with customers, partnering with potential competitors.

Prepare a 4–5-page white paper in which you explain how three selected functional areas are essential for an organization’s success and recommend the type of organizational structure best suited for the functional areas.

The functional areas within a business or organization contribute to the smooth and effective running of the business. Although the number and names of the functional areas vary from organization to organization, there are five that are key in almost every organization: human resources, accounting and finance, sales and marketing, production and operations, and information technology (IT) systems.

Ideally, organizations should be structured in ways that allow for the efficient and effective achievement of organizational goals. Having a clear organizational structure in place is a prerequisite for sustained success, yet many companies have organizational structures that do not contribute positively to their overall performance.

Within the overall structure of an organization are different areas that work together to help achieve the goals of leadership and personnel. These areas are often referred to as departments or functional areas. Human resources, sales and marketing, information technology, production and operations, and finance and accounting are some examples of functional areas. Organizations need functional areas, but not all organizations separate them the same way. Functional areas vary within organizations, depending on their focuses. Each area contributes in different ways to make sure the organizations reach their objectives and achieve effectiveness and efficiency.

In the past, large organizations tended to view their structures as more or less fixed hierarchies, part of the infrastructure required to build an entity that would last. In today’s business environment, most successful leaders view organizational structures as fluid, with frequent restructuring viewed as a primary means to keep the company competitive and responsive to the marketplace.

Preparation

Suppose leadership in the organization where you currently work (or have worked) is considering changes to organizational structure—in particular, to the functional areas it currently has. Before making any changes, the leaders have asked several managers, including you, to develop a white paper that outlines the managers’ recommendations for three functional areas that they believe to be essential to the success of the company. Based on the recommendations of each manager, as well as the strength of each manager’s arguments and supporting references, leadership will make final decisions.

Different areas within organizations work together to achieve organizational goals. These areas are often referred to as functional areas and typically include:

Human resources.
Sales and marketing.
Information technology.
Production and operations.
Finance and accounting.

Use the Capella library and the Internet to research functional areas of organizations and the purpose of these functional areas with regard to organizational goals. Use 3–7 reputable resources to support your writing in this assessment.
