What is ultimate reality? What is the nature of the universe? What is a human being?

This first week’s assignment, the Worldview Analysis and Personal Inventory, will help you explore some foundational concepts that are going to be very important throughout this class. Realize that this is not a science or clinical course. Rather, it incorporates philosophy and theology. In order to understand the role of ethical and spiritual decision making in healthcare, it is important that you, the healthcare professional, first understand your own philosophical and theological beliefs.  You will be introduced to the concept of a worldview and you will begin to intentionally assess and refine your own thinking so that you can eventually define most of your own worldview.  In particular, you will need to understand scientism, modernism and postmodernism as they relate to this course.  You will also need to be aware of how these “isms” can lead to reductionism about human beings and the marginalization of spirituality and religion.   Holistic nursing (caring for the whole person) involves the integration of science and religion/spirituality.  Thus, it is helpful for healthcare professionals to understand the role spirituality plays in their own worldview.

Throughout this course, we will be referring to questions that will help illuminate a person’s worldview.  They are:

  • What is ultimate reality?
  • What is the nature of the universe?
  • What is a human being?
  • What is knowledge?
  • What is your basis of ethics?
  • What is the purpose of your existence?

The assignment is to be submitted as one paper, with three sections (the worldview questions make great subheadings).  Don’t forget to include an introduction and conclusion.

Also, since your paper for this week is about you, please feel free to write in the first person where appropriate.  Please note, that when discussing the worldview questions, I would like for you to discuss your beliefs.

Here are a couple of additional hints for all of your papers in this course:  When writing your papers, use section headings and subheadings that follow the outline of the assignment requirements.  Each paper should have an introduction that includes both your thesis as well as a brief overview of the paper’s contents in light of the assignment requirements and your thesis.  Finally, make sure that unless the assignment calls for a different number, any paper at this level should have at least 3 academic references.  The Bible is of course a great resource, but is not considered an academic source.

Discuss an alternative scenario to represent the data in the scatter plots.

Module 6-1 Discussion:

Choose one of the following two prompts to respond to. In your two follow up posts, respond at least once to each prompt option.

You are invited by a local investment services firm, Edge Equity Investments, to interview for the position of investment manager in their local office. The position requires you to identify and promote investment opportunities offering superior returns to clients. Returns are a combination of dividends and increases in share value over time. This position will expand your skills in financial analysis and move your career forward in an exciting direction, and the firm is offering you an attractive benefits package in addition to a comfortable salary.

Prior to the interview, you must produce a report determining whether to recommend investment in Southwest Airlines listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Given the research you prepared as you invested funds received from a recent inheritance, you have decided to research this same firm.

Instructions:

Your task is to produce an Investment Analysis Report (with a maximum of 2,200 words, tables/graphs not included) appraising the return on equity of the firm you selected for review over the past two years using the latest 10-Q and the corresponding 10-Q from the previous year (so if you are using the 3rd quarter 10-Q, the comparison should be the 3rd quarter 10-Q from the previous year). You are required to employ financial statement analysis to break down the return on equity into its key parts using the basic Du Pont formula (See the reference section 3.6 of Chapter Three: Analyzing Financial Statements and point values below). Please consider that the panelists are all busy professionals not interested in reviewing a long report; therefore, you will need to keep to the word limit. The panel has also asked that you focus on analyzing the issues rather than on purely describing information. Analysis requires you to focus on explaining and predicting implications of trends rather than merely describing trends. Plan to include the following two sections in your analysis:

Section A: Investment Analysis

Company Overview & Firm-Specific Risks (max 200 words) [10 points]
Profit Margin (max 500 words) [20 points]
Total Asset Turnover (max 500 words) [20 points]
Equity Multiplier (max 500 words) [20 points]
Based on the above criteria, your investment recommendation to clients of Edge Equity Investments (max 200 words) [20 points]

Section B: Limitations

The task requires you to determine whether or not to recommend investment in this firm based on the preceding four categories of information. In the concluding section, you are to elaborate on the limitations of the above analysis, including what further sources of information you would like to use to make a more informed decision (200 words max). [10 points]

Perform the following analysis by analyzing a possible linear relation between two variables.

Option 1:

Using the data set provided from the NOAA for Manchester, NH, select any month between January 1930 and December 1958. Use the variables “MMXT” and “MMNT” for your analysis. Begin with your chosen month and analyze the next 61 data values (i.e. 5 years and 1 month) to determine if a relationship exists between the maximum temperature (MMXT) and the minimum temperature (MMNT).

Using Excel, StatCrunch, etc. create a scatter plot for your sample. Determine the
linear regression equation and correlation coefficient. Embed this scatter plot in your
initial post.

For your responses to your classmates (two responses required): Discuss the relationships between the scatter plot, the correlation coefficient, and the linear regression equation for the sample. Comment on the similarities and differences between your correlation and linear regression equation and that of your classmates. Why are there differences since you are drawing from the same population? Did you expect the differences will be large? Why or why not?

Option 2:

Write a mathematical scenario to describe each of the scatter plots.

Answer prompts made by fellow students with the following information:

Discuss an alternative scenario to represent the data in the scatter plots. In this scenario, assume there is correlation but where it would be inappropriate to conclude causation.

Use the discussion topic as a place to ask questions, speculate about answers, and share insights.

calculate specific ratios for the latest two fiscal years, and respond to a limited number of analysis questions.

Locate the Intuit Inc. website, retrieve the latest company’s annual report from that site, calculate specific ratios for the latest two fiscal years, and respond to a limited number of analysis questions. Please note that this entails far more than finding precalculated ratios from a website such as Yahoo! Finance or Google Finance. If you desire, you can use such a site for a reasonableness check on the results of your calculations, but any such comparisons should not be part of your resulting paper. Also, you might not match exactly to their figures anyway because those may include quarterly updates. • The paper should be three to four double-spaced pages (not counting the cover page and bibliography). • The font size should be 12-point and the type can be Times New Roman, Verdana, or Arial. • Your paper should be properly cited using APA referencing style. This means that citations should be in a bibliography and in the body of the paper wherever you refer to or directly quote any information or terms from other sources. For the section showing the ratio calculations, provide appropriate details regarding the formula used, the source of the data, and the resulting calculations. Although you are certainly welcome and encouraged to use Excel to complete these tasks, copying and pasting from Excel into the Word document is discouraged unless it can be done in a manner that is cosmetically appropriate. The requirements for the ratio analysis section are as follows. 1. Compute the following for each of the two most recent years. • Profit margin • Return on shareholders’ equity • Current ratio • Interest coverage ratio 2. Document your work by properly citing items such as the following. • The website for the company • The web page link for the annual report • The page number of the annual report • Appropriate details of the calculations The questions that should be addressed in the second section of the paper are as follows. 1. If you were an accountant for a potential vendor for this company, explain which of these ratios would be of the most interest to you. Would there also be a second ratio of interest to you? 2. If you were an accountant for a potential investor in this company, explain which of these ratios would be of the most interest to you. In your opinion, what other ratio or ratios beyond the ones listed above should also be considered in an investment context? 3. What is your overall opinion of this company based on the limited analysis completed via the four ratios? Feel free to mention any questions that you feel should still be considered in view of the ratios or the changes from one year to the next. Please also consider these suggestions for your success on this assignment. • If you choose a company from the list and have any trouble finding its website, the annual reports, or specific information, consider selecting a different company from the list instead. • If the company has subsidiaries, be sure to use the consolidated financial statements. • Be sure to use the financial statements rather than summaries elsewhere in the annual report

The Case of Maria Elena: What is the ethical thing for you to do?

The Case of Maria Elena

This case was developed by Tom Shanks, S.J., director of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. Maria Elena is a composite drawn from several real people, and her story represents some of the ethical dilemmas behind the immigration issue.

Maria Elena has cleaned your house each week for more than a year. You agree with your friend who recommended her that she does an excellent job and is well worth the £30 cash you pay her for four hours’ work. You’ve also come to like her, and you think she likes you, especially as her English has become better and you’ve been able to have some pleasant conversations.

Over the past three weeks, however, you’ve noticed Maria Elena becoming more and more distracted. One day, you ask her if something is wrong, and she tells you she really needs to make additional money. She hastens to say she is not asking you for a raise, becomes upset, and begins to cry. When she calms down a little, she tells you her story:

She came to the United Kingdom six years ago from Columbia with her child, Miguel, who is now 7 years old. They entered the country on a visitor’s visa that has expired, and Maria Elena now uses a National Insurance number she made up.

Her common-law husband, Luis, came to the United Kingdom first. He entered the country illegally, after paying smugglers £1500 to hide him under piles of grass cuttings for a six-hour truck ride across the border. When he had made enough money from low-paying day jobs, he sent for Maria Elena. Using a false passport, Luis now works as a busboy for a restaurant, which withholds part of his salary for taxes. When Maria Elena comes to work at your house, she takes the bus and Luis baby-sits.

In Columbia, Maria Elena and Luis lived in a small village where it was impossible to earn more than £3 a day. Both had O-Levels educations, common in their village. Life was difficult, but they did not decide to leave until they realized the future would be bleak for their child and for the other children they wanted to have. Luis had a cousin in London who visited and told Luis and Maria Elena how well his life was going. After his visit, Luis and Maria Elena decided to come to the United Kingdom.

Luis quickly discovered, as did Maria Elena, that life in London was not the way they had heard. The cousin did not tell them they would be able to afford to live only in a run-down three-room apartment with two other couples and their children. He did not tell them they would always live in fear of Immigration Authorities raids.

After they entered the United Kingdom, Maria Elena and Luis had a second child, Jose, who is 5 years old. The birth was difficult because she didn’t use the NHS system or welfare for fear of being discovered as undocumented. But, she tells you, she is willing to put up with anything so that her children can have a better life. “All the money we make is for Miguel and Jose,” she tells you. “We work hard for their education and their future.”

Now, however, her mother in Columbia is dying, and Maria Elena must return home, leaving Luis and the children. She does not want to leave them because she might not be able to get back into the United Kingsom, but she is pretty sure she can find a way to return if she has enough money. That is her problem: She doesn’t have enough money to make certain she can get back.

After she tells you her story, she becomes too distraught to continue talking. You now know she is an undocumented immigrant, working in your home.

What is the ethical thing for you to do?

What does it mean to have a self-concept that is so fused with representations of others?

All assignments MUST be typed and double-spaced, in APA style and must be written at graduate level English. The content, conciseness and clarity of your answers will be considered in the evaluation of your work. You must use and integrate the material presented in the course text and cite your work according to APA format. Use of outside resources can be used to enhance the text information, but cannot replace the text.

Do not copy the questions in your responses.

book Cervone, D., & Pervin, L. A. (2019). Personality: Theory and research. John Wiley & Sons.

Question One: Consider the Research by Zhu, Ziang, Fan, and

Han in the text on Cross-Cultural Differences in Brain Activation When Considering the Self.

What does it mean to have a self-concept that is so fused with representations of others?

What does it mean to have a self-concept that is NOT fused with representations of others?

What might the behavioral implications be?

Question Two: Some psychologists have suggested that while individuals tend to use

traits to describe themselves and others, this merely tells us something about the

cognitive functioning of individuals and about their interpersonal perceptions—

it does not tell us that traits represent the best tools for the scientific analysis of personality.

How important is the fact that the layperson finds the trait a useful construct? If we accept

the importance of the layperson’s use of this construct for theory development,

does this also commit us to accepting the specific trait names and categorizations used by

the layperson (e.g., honest, aggressive, sympathetic)?

Question Three: Big five terms are great for describing differences between people. But

are they also good for explaining people’s behavior? Is it reasonable to say that “Liz smiled

and greeted people happily because she is an extravert”? Or is that similar to saying “It is

sunny and warm in San Diego this week because San Diego has nice weather”?

In other words, is this sort of “explanation” one that just takes you around in circles?

Question Four: The text discusses research on brain systems involved in higher-level

psychological functions, such as self-concept. How much do we learn about such

psychological functions by studying the brain? In other words, since we know that some

systems in the brain have to be involved in any psychological function, does an analysis

of underlying neuroanatomy answer the most pressing questions about personality? Or does

it leave unanswered critical questions about the ways in which these psychological capacities develop and function in the social world? In short: Can there be a neuroscience of personality?

Question Five:  Skinner suggests that since environmental control is ever-present,

we should learn to make maximum use of these environmental influences.  He also suggests

that concern with internal variables, such as emotion and motivation, as explanations of

behavior has led psychologists astray. Do you think this approach would lead to a more

scientific psychology?  Or might it instead create a psychology that fails to develop a science

of important aspects of human experience?

Question Six: In considering Kelly’s constructive alternativism, does it seem odd to read

about a theorist who holds little stock in idea that there is an objective reality or absolute

truth to discover?  Can we conduct a science of persons if there is no objective reality or

truth to discover?  How might Kelly’s constructive alternativism foster an even more fruitful

scientific investigation of persons than other theories?

Question Seven: B. F. Skinner questioned people’s capacity for free will and self-control.

In what ways does social cognitive theory, and its associated programs of research,

provide a counter-argument to Skinner’s position? How does a focus on expectancies

differentiate social-cognitive theory from behaviorism?  How does this shift enable

social-cognitive theorists to explain why two people react differently to the same

environment?

Question Eight: People seem to differ in their “moods.” Some people are commonly

“upbeat” and “lively.” Others seem lower in energy. Some people seem commonly to

be depressed. How does social cognitive theory explain these individual differences?

Or does it? Might this be a limitation to the social-cognitive approach? What are your

thoughts about problem-focused and emotion-focused coping?
