Briefly describe a change that was not well planned and/or well executed in your workplace. Using Kotter’s 8 step model, describe one-two actions you would take at each of the 8 stages to increase the likelihood of acceptance and success.

In 1996, John Kotter wrote Leading Change, which looked at what people did to transform their organizations. Kotter introduced an 8-step change model for helping managers deal with transformational change. This is summarized in Kotter’s 8-step change model. Whether you’re considering a small change to one or two processes, or a system wide change to an organization, it’s common to feel uneasy and intimidated by the scale of the challenge. You know that the change needs to happen, but you don’t really know how to go about doing delivering it. Where do you start? Whom do you involve? How do you see it through to the end? There are many theories about how to “do” change.

This assignment will provide an opportunity for students to reflect on a change they have experienced in their workplace. Applying Kotter’s 8-step model, they will make suggestions about how the change could have been more successfully managed.

Assignment instructions:
Briefly describe a change that was not well planned and/or well executed in your workplace. Using Kotter’s 8 step model, describe one-two actions you would take at each of the 8 stages to increase the likelihood of acceptance and success.

Choose any piece of literature (book, short story, comic, poem, play), a film, or a television show that you’d like to learn more about. Explore symbolism in the work. How does the use of symbolism amplify the story’s themes, characters, etc.? Compare any two works. How do the themes coincide? How are they different?

Choose any piece of literature (book, short story, comic, poem, play), a film, or a television show that you’d like to learn more about. However, the work MUST be a piece of FICTION.  If you’d like, you can even use some of the short stories we discussed in this class.

  1. Keep in mind, this is a persuasive paper. Meaning, this shouldn’t be a book or film report, rather this is an analysis with a clear thesis. In order to focus your topic, consider exploring some of the ideas below:
  • How does the protagonist function as the classic idea of a quester?
  • Explore symbolism in the work. How does the use of symbolism amplify the story’s themes, characters, etc.?
  • Compare any two works. How do the themes coincide? How are they different?
  • Investigate the work’s historical context.
  • Research the author’s purpose and technique behind the work.
  • Does the work function as an allegory? How so?

If you can think of a better idea that you’d like to explore, please feel free to do so.

3. Develop a rough thesis and paper outline to guide the rest of your research and ideas.

Analyze significant primary texts as forms of cultural and creative expression; to explain the ways in which texts reflect the culture and values of their time and place; to frame a comparative context to critically assess the ideas, forces, and values that shape texts; to develop an interpretation of a literary text, support the interpretation with textual evidence and a secondary source

  • “How to Write a Good Essay”. This chapter explains how to write literary analysis essays on different topics: themes, characters, genres, language, symbolism, imagery, and historical context. It also discusses how to compare and contrast two texts. Finally, it explains how to get started with a thesis and outline, and it shows how to organize your paper with examples. This is from a book on Gabriel García Márquez, so many of the examples are drawn from works by García Márquez; however, the strategies and examples in it should be useful for writing about any author or fictional text.

Analyze significant primary texts as forms of cultural and creative expression; to explain the ways in which texts reflect the culture and values of their time and place; to frame a comparative context to critically assess the ideas, forces, and values that shape texts; to develop an interpretation of a literary text, support the interpretation with textual evidence and a secondary source, and cite the source material; to use MLA documentation and formatting; to practice using scholarly sources of literary criticism; to practice the process of writing; to practice essay organization and editing skills.

Assignment: Create a literary analysis essay built on close readings of 1-2 fictional texts. Consider the elements of fiction and vocabulary terms you have learned this semester, and then choose one specific aspect of the text(s) to analyze, such as plot, point-of-view, characterization, setting, style, theme, tone, symbolism, irony, or use of a specific figurative language device.

After you have selected one aspect of the text(s), reread the text(s), looking for patterns. Think about how and why the author uses the elements of fiction to create meaning. Try to be specific. Something like “Shirley Jackson’s ‘The Lottery’ uses foreshadowing” is a fact, not a thesis. You will have to think about how and why she uses foreshadowing. Then you have an interpretation that will need proof, which is much better.

If you select two fictional texts, you should choose ones that have a significant similarity in the element you wish to discuss. Then you can compare and contrast the texts to find patterns. You may wish to consider a topic that you have already thought about or something mentioned on the course Content.

In the film, the MNU states that “the responsibility for co-existing starts at home. Staying inside your designated residential region will help keep order intact. Territorial integrity helps individuals feel safe, secure, and empowered.” What degree of authority/control/influence, do you feel, should governments have over a population?

1.Compare the themes explored in both District 9 and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” . Use specific examples from both works. Discuss the parallels of the treatment of the “other” in our own society. How do we make people the “other” in our own society?

  1. Wikus, the human, is given a less conventional name than the alien Christopher, a seemingly very common name. Why do you think the director chose this method of naming the main characters? Thinking back to when we dissected the name Arnold Friend in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” consider of Christopher’s name once again. (Hint: Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. Also, look at the name itself: Christopher = Christ + of). What types of allusions might be made to this name? (Hint #2: When looking at possible allusions to his name, what does Christopher do andpromise to do at the end of the film?)
  2. In the film, the MNU states that “the responsibility for co-existing starts at home. Staying inside your designated residential region will help keep order intact. Territorial integrity helps individuals feel safe, secure, and empowered.” What degree of authority/control/influence, do you feel, should governments have over a population?
  3. After viewing the first selection ofDistrict 9and reading Emily Asher-Perrin’s article “The Urge to Flee the Theater: What District 9 Taught the World” consider the concept of being an “other.” Using specific references from what you’ve seen in the film and evidence (in-text citations) from the article, discuss how the protagonist (Wickus) brings this concept to the forefront.
  4. What is the importance of storytelling (in all forms) to the development of cultural and personal values? Does this science fiction story provide any insights and revelations about the world in which we live?

Develop a business concept in its entirety. Describe the new product or service. Discuss the qualities that make this product/service new to the marketplace and the rationale for your decision to pursue the concept

This assignment entails development of a comprehensive strategic marketing plan for a new product or service that is ready to “go to market”. A Project Template is provided that allows you to organize your work in increments and see how the sections come together to produce a comprehensive plan.

This assignment requires application of concepts learned to build a strategic marketing plan for a new product or service that is ready to “go to market”. You will not be allowed to mimic plans or ideas from larger or already “inplace” campaigns. You must develop the business concept in its entirety.
Describe the new product or service. Discuss the qualities that make this product/service new to the marketplace and the rationale for your decision to pursue the concept. Be sure to pick a product or service that is ready to market. If you are developing a new product, assume that the development phase is over and you are ready to launch the product into the marketplace.

Create a Mission Statement. State your short-term MARKETING objectives (one year). Assume that the product/service is ready to launch at the beginning of the year (planning and testing have been completed).
Marketing objectives include goals for sales, profits, market share (as examples). Objectives need to be quantifiable.

Identify your target market. Provide a specific demographic profile and rationale for this decision. Another source that may help you: The US Census Bureau’s American Fact Finder. Consider the size of the market and its purchasing power.
Analyze your competition. Who are they? Who are the biggest players? How large is the market? What are the trends/forecasts in the industry? How does your product/service fit in? Business Source Complete in the Library is a good tool for this section; it may be accessed under Find Articles & eBooks.

Provide a brief overview of the product or service.
State the features of your product/service. Show how it’s innovative and different. It may be unique because of the area in which you plan to market it. Discuss legal and ethical implications that could affect the marketing process. This will require research.

Discuss your Core Strategy and make sure to connect it to your Mission & Objectives. Include a discussion on Product/Service Positioning.

The Marketing Mix is the set of decisions about communications and promotion, price, channels of distribution, and customer relationship management. An integrated marketing communications (IMC) approach delivers a clear and consistent message to your consumers and is connected to your Core Strategy.
Discuss the aspects of the IMC. (The elements of the communication mix include: advertising, direct marketing, sales promotion, publicity/public relations and personal selling.) Define each and discuss the pros and cons of the individual elements.

2.  Provide a detailed description of your IMC approach. Explain your rationale for choosing or rejecting the specific elements (include applications to the earlier research section). What changes do you expect to make as the product/service matures?

3.  Describe the message you wish to communicate based on your core strategy. Explain your rationale for the message. Formulate how you will communicate with your target market? Be specific. How will the internet be used in your IMC approach?

4.  Select and explain the most suitable method for measuring advertising effectiveness. Your decision must include research to back up the selected method. Be sure to explain why this is the most effective method to measure the effectiveness of your marketing campaign.

Discuss what pricing objectives you would consider for your product/service. The Objectives should be based on the various theories presented in marketing literature and take in to account competitor pricing. Including background on value proposition, positioning, and target market is necessary. All of these components provide rationale for the chosen pricing scheme.

Watch the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” produced by Mark Rydell (ITC Films). (Caution: this film contains profanity and a couple of derogatory references to lesbians.)

Write a 6-8 page paper that examines the psychological attributes exhibited by the aging character Norman Thayer, Jr., played by Henry Fonda. Be sure to go beyond just describing what happens in the story. Your focus should be on observing what goes on with this character and describing/explaining it through application of the theories and research in your text, instructor notes, and other materials provided in this lesson. Headings in the instructor notes will remind you of the major specific areas you should cover in your paper, including personality, learning, memory, and motivation. If you wish, you may include other related areas as well.

Conduct research to find out one or more differences that exist between balance sheets that are prepared using U.S. GAAP and those prepared using International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Explain the difference and if there seems to have been a move in recent years toward convergence of the two systems.

In this week’s discussion, we will be looking at some of the differences between U.S. GAAP and IFRS, which is the set of accounting rules followed by just about every industrialized nation outside the U.S. While there are many similarities between the two systems, there are also some significant differences. After learning a little bit about some of the similarities and differences, reflect somewhat on how these differences might impact financial statement analysis, or if you think they actually would.
