You are a new DNP working in an outpatient multi-specialty corporate owned setting, the same center your scholarly project was completed in: Medical Center of the West (MCW).  Providers are employed by the healthcare system.  During your coursework and scholarly project completion, you observed some concerning scenarios among colleagues in the workplace that collectively require strong leadership intervention.

36 yr old male APRN in neurology:  newly dx with pre-DM, has gained 20# over past 3 yrs since taking job at MCW.  Attributes this to long days, eating on the run, and no longer time for exercise.  States he hardly ever gets to see his wife and children due to demands of work, including several hours every night charting in the EMR.  He states he feels shorter tempered with administration lately as new initiatives are rolled out.  He states, “we are merely employees…they don’t seem to care about our expertise anymore, just tell us what to do”.

48 yr old endocrinologist: Previously owned and operated own practice with physician spouse, spouse fell ill necessitating closure of practice.  In addition to the MD degree, holds a master’s in social work giving her a highly relational, high touch/high care approach to patient care.  Hired as medical director of new Endo department.  During the 15 month tenure became increasingly frustrated at unanswered requests for support staff, inability to get standard of care devices such as professional continuous glucose monitors, and modern computers for insulin pump downloads. Staying until 7pm most nights, sometimes until 9pm.  No longer able to play organized sports after work, and states hardly ever saw her 12 yr old son.  After several frank and open discussions with administration without a mutually agreeable plan to address the issues, endo leaves the practice.

60 yr old Family Practice Physician/PCP: In practice x 25 years.  Quality of care, personal outlook on the medical system and self-care began slipping the past 2 years.  At the same time, elderly father’s health was slowly failing.  While previously the PCP would handle complex patients, he started referring common primary care health problems to specialists in effort to manage schedule and make it through the day.  Despite this, would have to take work home every night.  Decided to retire, notified administration, and was not allowed to work out notice due to “attitude.”

32 yr old Physician Assistant/PCP:  Worked 3 years for MCW straight out of school.  Satisfied and challenged the first 2 years.  Year 3 told had to see 4 more patients per day:  2 new, 2 established, resulting in longer days, less evening time with family.  The new patients were mostly medically complex and part of the state’s ACA Medicaid expansion, or patients seeking pain management.  Increasing regulations around pain medication prescribing due to the nationwide opiod crisis were forcing many providers in the state to stop pain management services.  The PA was verbally assaulted several times in year 3, and twice physically punched by patients who were denied opiods.  The 2nd physical assault in addition to the longer hours were cited as reasons to change employers to a private dermatology practice.

50 yr old Physical Therapist: “I left the healthcare field.  I was expected to see the same number of patients with increasing paperwork and documentation time. I was spending double the time documenting as I was giving care”.

As you write your 12-15-page paper focusing on leadership and change theory, please consider the scenarios as a group.  You do not need to analyze each one individually, but rather look for common cues or themes.  Utilize the IHI.org Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge (System, Theories, Variations and Human Behavior) as the framework in consideration of needed change for improvement.

  • What is likely going on here (and how do you know)?
  • What are the clinicians experiencing?
  • What (2) leadership theories would help guide you in addressing this problem?  Specifically apply them.
  • From a healthcare system perspective what are potential contributing factors?  While you may not know everything about the system, research some known healthcare system issues.  As discussed in the IHI video, consider variations and human behaviors (including but in no way limited to VABEs).
  • Choose a change theory and formulate a change plan to address and improve the problem.

Suppose a community team identifies lack of access to exercise modalities as a public health issue. If the team were to determine that pedestrian walkways need to be constructed, discuss at least two factors that would facilitate the development of the walkways and two that would hinder the development.

Suppose a community team identifies lack of access to exercise modalities as a public health issue. If the team were to determine that pedestrian walkways need to be constructed, discuss at least two factors that would facilitate the development of the walkways and two that would hinder the development. For the hindrances, discuss ways that the team might work to overcome those hindrances.

Pros for pedestrian walkways

One factor that could be utilized for the development of pedestrian walkways is to emphasize the safety benefits for a its citizens.  According to U.S. Department of Transportation, “Annually, around 4,500 pedestrians are killed in traffic crashes with motor vehicles in the United States.  Pedestrians killed while “walking along the roadway” account for almost 8 percent of these deaths.” (US DOT, 2013)

The second factor is the benefits of mobility.  The expanded walkways can help to get more and more people options of being able to get around on foot.  People are more opt to walk or ride a bicycle if they had a safer way to do so.  These people also reduce the numbers of cars that are on the road because the decided to take an alternative. The DOT writes “Sidewalks provide many benefits including safety, mobility, and healthier communities.” (US DOT, 2013)

Cons for pedestrian walkways

One of a major cause for a lack of pedestrian walkways is a lack of financial backing to pay for them. According to City Lab “But as the city has grown and the community has called for a more walkable public realm, relying on property owners to cough up the thousands of dollars to build publicly accessible sidewalks has become less than ideal.” (City Lab, 2012) There are areas in the United States that aren’t able to afford walkways because it hasn’t been budgeted.  The other dilemma is that depending on where you live and if it is remote then the less chances that a walkway will be built unless someone privately funds it.

The second cause for pedestrian walkways is due to not enough population in the town to justify constructing them.  Walkways would be built as a means for people to get around safely and in order to do so you need people.  Hence, the predicament that many small towns argue when dealing with situations such as this.

Describe how a country can measure its income inequality. Evaluate the effect of income inequality on the U.S. economy, such as unemployment, economic growth, and other economic factors.

Describe how a country can measure its income inequality.

Evaluate the effect of income inequality on the U.S. economy, such as unemployment, economic growth, and other economic factors.
Estimate the gap between those who hold bachelor’s and higher (master or doctoral) degrees and those who do not.

Explain reasons why the inequality gap between educated and less-educated workers has been widening.

Evaluate whether increasing opportunities for higher education can reduce income inequality.

Analyze what else causes U.S. income inequality to widen.

Write a letter analyzing the social media output of a company that you would like to work for someday. This assignment focuses on learning the skill of analysis, which is where you take information and draw conclusions from it based on observations you make.

You will be asked to write a letter analyzing the social media output of a company that you would like to work for someday. The purpose in writing the letter is to demonstrate your understanding of how professionals use social media in the real world and then draw some conclusions from the actual social media content using the rhetorical skill of analysis.

This assignment focuses on learning the skill of analysis, which is where you take information and draw conclusions from it based on observations you make.  In other words, you will not simply be summarizing the social media postings of your chosen company; you will use those postings as a basis from which to draw a series of conclusions.

The letter must include (1) a short introduction in which you introduce yourself and why you are writing, (2) a section in which you analyze THREE social media platforms currently being used by the company, (3) a section in which you make recommendations about how they might use social media differently or what other social media platforms they might wish to try. It must be written to an actual person at the company.

Aim for 750-1250 words.

If you choose Burger King (aim higher!) for your company, you might look at their Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook feeds, all of which are filled with minimal text and lots of images of hamburgers and fries; you might also notice that they usually posted early in the morning or before lunchtime. Your analysis would reveal that they are primarily using all their social media platforms to appeal to young males who might crave these items in the middle of the day. In your recommendations section, you might suggest differentiating their social media platforms more clearly, or using at least one platform to appeal to women (or health-conscious men), or using a platform they currently don’t use.

Your sources for this essay will primarily be primary; in other words, you will use the actual social media postings from your company as evidence to support your analysis and your recommendations. You might also compare their social media output with the output of rival companies. Use screenshots of those postings throughout your letter to support your claims and visually break up the text. Make it look good.

Reflect on which arguments about the topic you chose from Canadian Points of View you accept, those outlined in the Point, Counterpoint, or a completely different argument. For you, what is the single most compelling argument regarding corona virus 2019 (COVID-19), and why?

Within the Canadian Points of View Reference Centre (which you can access via the Douglas College Library—you will need to consent to having a personal account with EBSCO information Services), explore topics from the list that interest you and about which you would like to develop a more informed perspective. Select one of the topics from the list, and prepare to write a persuasive essay in which you will argue your own point of view, supported by your own experience and/or observation, as well as research.

Your essay, which you will plan, research, and write this week and next, must include at least one of each of the following six types of research sources:

Points of View essay
Magazine
Newspaper
Reference book (may be a second Points of View essay)
Radio or TV news transcript
Academic journal.
You can easily access relevant sources of all of these types under Related Information on the left of the Overview of your topic. You can also use the search bar at the top of the home page (click on New Search) of the Canadian Points of View Reference Centre to find sources. Write an academic book review for the following book: Mayeri, Serena. Reasoning from Race: Feminism, Law, and the Civil Rights Revolution. Harvard, 2011.Your first paragraph should concisely explain the book’s scope/time period, the author’s main purpose and arguments thesis.

Write an academic book review for the following book: Mayeri, Serena. Reasoning from Race: Feminism, Law, and the Civil Rights Revolution. Harvard, 2011.

The general purpose of book reviews is to give your readers a good idea of what the book is about, what the main arguments and contributions are, and how the author goes about supporting her or his argument.

Reviews should be a minimum of 600 words in length, and follow these guidelines:

The “title” of your review should be the book’s publication info, including the author, title, place of publisher, name of publisher, date of publication, and edition you read (revised, ebook, etc.)
Your first paragraph is the most important. In it, you should concisely explain the book’s scope/time period, the author’s main purpose and arguments thesis. (This paragraph should be about 200 words and 14-16 lines)
The body of your review should offer some limited summary and should focus on the highlights of the book—chapters or sections where the author excels at originality or in supporting their argument, or ones that you found the most insightful or enjoyable to read. (Accomplish this in two or three paragraphs, at least 300 words)
Your final paragraph is not a throw-away “this is a good and interesting book” sort of thing. It should be helpful and substantive. If you feel comfortable doing so you should make some comparisons to other books you have read on a similar topic. You can reiterate particularly well done parts, and also acknowledge shortcomings. You can also discuss the sources the author used, particularly if they are especially relevant to the book’s argument or are from archives in other countries, etc. Assessment of the book. (About 100 words)
Limited quoting is acceptable. If you are quoting from the book, list include a parenthetical citation with the page number (5). Your name and institution affiliation (Tarleton State University) should appear at the bottom of your review.
Please note, book reviews are not book summaries. You are addressing the author’s argument, sources, and methodology, and you do not need to provide a chapter-by-chapter summary.

Suppose people’s willingness to pay follows normal distribution with mean μ and variance σ2 , derive likelihood function to estimate mean μ and variance σ2 based on the responses(yes or no) of n respondents.

Suppose a researcher wanted to estimate people’s willingness to pay for public construction project. He asked to i-th respondent that “Are you willing to pay Ai amount of tax for public construction project?”, and the respondent would only say yes or no. Suppose people’s willingness to pay follows normal distribution with mean μ and variance σ2 , derive likelihood function to estimate mean μ and variance σ2 based on the responses(yes or no) of n respondents. (Hint: A respondent will accept an offer if his/her willingness to pay is larger than the given amount of tax A)
