Examine the protection of human subjects in research from early research studies, through the development of research codes to current research standards.

Human Research Protection

During this course, you will learn the components required for a research study. Each week you will learn components of the research process through your readings and application of the knowledge gained to published research articles.

During this week, you are expected to examine the protection of human subjects in research from early research studies, through the development of research codes to current research standards. The aim is to familiarize you with the ethical issues associated with research and gain firsthand information of the processes used to protect research participants.

In Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle,” describe the personalities of both Rip and Dame Van Winkle. Do you think a reader in Washington Irving’s lifetime would have had more sympathy for Rip or Dame Van Winkle?

In Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle,” describe the personalities of both Rip and Dame Van Winkle. Do you think a reader in Washington Irving’s lifetime would have had more sympathy for Rip or Dame Van Winkle? Which character do you have more sympathy for? Justify your answers.

About Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown,” Christopher Linforth explains, “you can read Brown’s journey into the forest in three distinct ways: as a dream, as a trick played by the devil, or as an actual occurrence” (14). Which of those three interpretations of the story do you prefer? What evidence supports that interpretation? What difference does it make if Brown’s journey was a dream, a trick, or real?

In rereading Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge,” can you find specific moments of foreshadowing or other hints that his escape is not real? Also, how do you explain the middle parts of this story? What is really happening in Part III?

For D.H. Lawrence’s “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” Janice H. Harris suggests three possible interpretations: social, familial, and psychological (1034-36). Which interpretation, or combination of interpretations, most closely reflects your own understanding of the story? What other themes or interpretations would you suggest?

Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

EB is a 68-year-old black female who comes in for a follow-up of hypertension. She has glaucoma and her vision has been worsening during the past few years. She lives alone and is prescribed four hypertension medications (Hydralazine 50 mg PO Q8H, Metoprolol XL 200 mg PO Q12H, Lisinopril 40 mg PO daily, and HCTZ 25mg PO daily ). She brings in her medication bottles and she has some medication bottles from the previous year full of medications. She is missing one medication she had been prescribed and says she may have forgotten it at home. Her BP in the clinic today is 182/99 with HR of 84.

Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

List and describe the stages of processing a dental X-ray film. Bear in mind that the process is similar irrespective of whether the film is processed manually or automatically.

Carefully read through each question.  Reflect on your learning for this unit and on your own research.

  1. There are several different types of dental radiation. List each type and, in your own words, provide an explanation of each.
  1. How can dental staff be protected from excessive radiation at the workplace? List the key points for protecting yourself, patients, and other staff.  In your response, include the ALARA principle.
  1. There are many different factors affecting the radiation dose and several different ways of measuring it. List and describe three different radiation doses.
  1. List and describe the stages of processing a dental X-ray film. Bear in mind that the process is similar irrespective of whether the film is processed manually or automatically.
  1. Briefly explain the purpose of the following components of an intraoral dental X-ray tube: Cathode, Anode, Leaded glass housing, Collimator and PIO.
  1. Why is reporting processing issues important? Whom do you report to, and what details do you provide when reporting?
  1. In your own words, describe what is meant by film fog. List at least six possible causes of film fog and, for each cause, explain how you would correct the fault.

Explain why many ancient Greek philosophers and writers admired more the Spartan way of life and government than Athenian one

Comparing ancient and modern democracy -> You must decide which was the most democratic system

  1. Think about what you believe to be the most important characteristics of democracy
  2. Work on the strengths and weaknesses of each system.
  3. Focus on different aspects, such as participation, people’s power, education, minorities’ rights, accountability,…
  4. Support your answer with strong and thoughtful arguments, and not just superficial ones

Expanding core: Explain why many ancient Greek philosophers and writers admired more the Spartan way of life and government than Athenian one.

Review a company’s organizational chart and comment on the structure. How is the span of management divided? Is unity of command established so individuals are only answering to one boss?

To organize efficiently and effectively, an organization must have a well-defined formal structure. This allows for flow of information/communication, assigning of tasks and allocation of resources. Review a company’s organizational chart and comment on the structure, you could review a company you have worked for as well. If using this site when choosing a chart, by default only names not the positions appear. Double-click one of the names on the chart and the titles/positions will appear. A good example on this site is the structure of AT&T, some charts on this site are very incomplete, so choose carefully. Also many industries are represented on this site so try to find one in line with your field. Although these charts do not show the most basic level, I believe we can begin to understand the underlying structure. Comments could be drawn from the following statements and questions:
1.How is the span of management divided?
2. Is unity of command established so individuals are only answering to one boss?
3. Is the organizational chart considered flat or tall?
4. How are departments within the organization divided?

Develop a timeline of five key management theory/principle milestones over time. Why was this milestone significant for the period of time it was created?

Based on your readings and research, develop a timeline of five key management theory/principle milestones over time. Address the following questions for each of the milestones you elect to include on your timeline:

Why was this milestone significant for the period of time it was created? What was going on in the world of work that allowed the environment to know the time was right for this particular milestone?
Which theorist “fathered” the principle? What were the signs of the time which led the theorist to develop the management concept?
What are the highlights and limitations of the theory/principle?

Identify a workaround that is commonly used at your place of work, including a description of its impact on workflow processes. Explain how workarounds might affect potential patient safety issues

Scenario: You work for a busy clinic that has recently hired a number of new nurses. Your supervisor wants to get the new hires up to speed as quickly as possible and realized that some important workflows are not documented. Your supervisor has asked you and the other veteran nurses to select a process and create a flowchart that illustrates the process. She has also asked you to identify one commonly used workaround in your selected process.

In response to your supervisor, you have decided to create a presentation that will document both the workflow and the workaround for the process you have chosen, as well as an analysis of how the workaround impacts the workflow flowchart

Your presentation should contain the following sections:

Introduction (1 slides)
Identify a workaround that is commonly used at your place of work, including a description of its impact on workflow processes. Explain how workarounds might affect potential patient safety issues.
Workaround Strategy (1 slide)
Recommend at least one strategy that can be used to resolve the workaround.
Workflow (1 slide)
Explain the workflow process affected by the workaround. Include a description of the process and its purpose.
Preliminary Flowchart (1 slide)
Create a preliminary flowchart to illustrate the workflow process. The goal of this preliminary flowchart is just to get the process mapped out. You will add more detail in the final flowchart.
Final Flowchart (1-2 slides)
If you can, observe the process you are describing at your place of work and look for ways to improve the process. Also, look for ways to incorporate the workaround into the standard process. Consider checking with the EHR vendor for your clinic to see if they have suggestions for how to improve your workflow. Based on your findings, prepare a final flowchart that represents a thorough and complete illustration of the improved workflow process you have chosen—one that can quickly and efficiently get the new hires up to speed.
Discussion of Change in Flowchart (1-2slides)
Evaluate how your flowchart changed from the preliminary flowchart to the final flowchart in your presentation. Explain why these changes were made and how they affect the overall process you are describing. Analyze how these changes will contribute to increased efficiencies and workflow.
Strategies for Improved Workflow Processes (1 slides)
Analyze the challenges and possible impediments to the implementation of the revised workflow. Recommend a strategy to address these potential challenges.

What is the social movement? Why did it emerge? /What social movement framework should we use to study it and why? How did it emerge? What were some of the variables needed for it to emerge?

Analyze a social movement that would be categorized under the broader them of ‘Women’s Liberation’ by addressing the first question of the course:

What is the social movement? (define it)/Why did it emerge? /What social movement framework should we use to study it and why? How did it emerge? (What were some of the variables needed for it to emerge? Think along the lines of emotions, deprivation, networks, resources, political opportunity, structural changes, and/or a shared collective identity.)
In writing your essay please remember that it is up to you to determine the component of the movement in question that you are talking about. For example, for women’s liberation, you could discuss the suffrage movement, the battle for reproductive justice or even the #metoo movement. For each of those social movements mentioned you could even get more specific. One example is writing about Puerto Rican women’s struggle for reproductive justice. How specific you get is up to you but I do suggest that the more specific you are, the easier the essay will be. You can use sources from class or outside sources. Please cite your sources. In exploring your social movement make sure that you are concentrating on the first analytical question of the class. However you should feel free to start exploring the other questions in this first essay as well or you can expand on a component of the social movement that you are looking at that really interest you.

Alternative Option: Write about a “counter movement” to the movements categorized under Women’s Liberation. Examples could be: The Incel Movement, Pro-life movements, or even some Men’s Rights Movements. Check out the information I have in the folder ‘Counter Movements’ in the ‘Supplemental Information’ menu tab to help you write this paper. Be sure to still answer the same analytical question.
