As part of your action plan, how would you assess a potential job candidate’s teamwork skills? Discuss the benefits of using reference checks when hiring individuals for your team.

Required Activity:
In this 34-minute interview, Kevin Ryan discusses what he considers to be the key building blocks of starting a new venture: ideas, people, and money. Consider using the following discussion questions:

Assume you are a new manager at Nomad Health, Kevin Ryan’s latest start-up which is focused on developing a website where doctors and nurses can search for temporary work and hospitals and clinics can find temporary staffing. Further, assume that you have been tasked with developing a great team within the next five months. Describe your action plan for how you would achieve that goal.

As part of your action plan, how would you assess a potential job candidate’s teamwork skills? Discuss the benefits of using reference checks when hiring individuals for your team.

Assume that one of the job candidates that you hired is just not working out. Discuss how you would handle the situation, and justify your proposed action plan.

What role did chance, assumptions, and curiosity play in Warren and Marshall’s research on Helicobacter pylori?Describe how the story of Warren and Marshall’s discovery illustrates the process of science.

Do you think it ethical and appropriate for Marshall to have used himself as a test subject and swallowed a sample of Helicobacter pylori? What precautions did he take? Would you do it? Why or why not?

2. How did the colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS) experiment provide evidence supporting Warren and Marshall’s hypothesis? 3. Answer the following questions based on the data presented in Fig.

3: a. In Table II, of those patients with ulcers, how many were positive for H. pylori? Of those patients with normal endoscopic results, how many were positive for the bacteria? b. Based on this data, Warren and Marshall hypothesized that there was a causal relationship between ulcers and bacterial infection. But there were 4 patients with ulcers that were negative for the bacteria. Why is this not signif cant? c. If there is a causal relationship between the presence of H. pylori and ulcers, how might you explain that 50% of the patients with a normal endoscopic examination were infected with the bacteria? d. In your own words, explain the results presented in Table III. What do you conclude from this data?

4. Robert Koch was a German physician who identifed the bacteria causing anthrax and tuberculosis. His methods established four criteria that must be met for a specifc pathogen to be considered the cause of a disease. T ese four criteria are listed below. For each one, discuss whether Warren and Marshall fulflled them and, if so, how. I. Te pathogen should be found in the bodies of animals having the disease. II. Te suspected pathogen should be obtained from the diseased animal and grown outside the body.
“Helicobacter pylori and the Bacterial Teory of Ulcers” by Debra Ann Meuler Page 6
III. Te inoculation of that pathogen, grown in pure cultures, should produce the disease in an experimental animal. IV. Te same pathogen should be isolated from the experimental animal after the disease develops.

5. What role did chance, assumptions, and curiosity play in Warren and Marshall’s research on Helicobacter pylori?

6. Describe how the story of Warren and Marshall’s discovery illustrates the process of science.

7. How does this case illustrate the tentative nature of science? 8. How does this case illustrate the role of technology in scientif c progress?

9. Why is this discovery significant? Do you think it is worthy of a Nobel Prize?

10. What does the Helicobacter story tell us? What lessons can be learned from this story?

11. Albert Gyorgyi, 1937 Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine, once said in his Nobel award speech: “Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.” Describe how this statement applies to Warren and Marshall’s pioneering work on peptic ulcer disease.

Select a current diversity issue in the workplace, and research the issue from a variety of perspectives. Write a 6-7 page analysis of a concept or issue related to workplace diversity.

Current Diversity Issue Research Paper (Team assignment) – Due week 6
Description
Groups of 2-3 students will form and select a current diversity issue in the workplace, and research the issue from a variety of perspectives. Examples of topics include age, sexual or religious discrimination, gender diversity/discrimination, LGBTQ issues, diversity issues in Europe, diversity issues in Asia, cross-cultural communication, diverse leadership styles, and child labor. The specific concepts to be selected must be approved by the faculty member, so students will submit their topic selection before the end of Session 2 to obtain consent to proceed.
The paper should be structured as follows:
1. Students will write a 6-7 page analysis of a concept or issue related to workplace diversity. The page count does not include the cover or the reference page. Please do not exceed 7 pages.
2. Begin the analysis with a short introductory paragraph expressing what the concept is and why it is significant to you and your colleagues. Be sure to define and describe it carefully.
3. Research the literature (use at least four (4) scholarly sources) to enhance your analysis of the selected concept. *Use the course text to support your ideas if appropriate. Provide examples, illustrations, and case studies that will enhance the understanding and appreciation of the concept and analyze the various ways it can be addressed in the workplace.
4. Identify recommendations for further research, education, and management as appropriate.
5. Have an interesting and meaningful conclusion. In the conclusion, bring to a close your analysis of the concept, and go beyond a summary of key points made.
6. **Discuss also the broader implications of the main points addressed in the paper, and any suggestions for workplace diversity training that might apply.

Research 6-8 poems written by one author to construct a thorough analysis of the poet’s voice. Create an 8-poem original collection and perform a voice and tone study on themselves and their collection

For this path, students will select a poet who was covered by the course and perform a voice and tone study on that author. Their essay must meet the above requirements as well as the following path-specific requirements.
1. Research a Poet’s Body of Work: Students who have selected the scholarly path must research 6-8 poems written by one author to construct a thorough analysis of the poet’s voice. One of the poems must be one that we have or will study this semester. The poet may be one from the supplemental readings or from the book. If you choose an author whose work tends to be longer than other poets (Think Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself”), then you may be allowed to focus on a smaller number of poems, but you will need to have written instructor approval.

2. An Annotated Bibliography: For this path, the student will also be required to submit a 4-source annotated bibliography showcasing some of the research being done for this project. This will not count toward page count of the final essay.

3. A Peer Review with their assigned Partner: Complete a peer review for the final project with a partner assigned by the instructor. (These peer review sessions must be completed a week before the paper is due, and the students will not be given class time to complete this portion of the assignment.)

4. Third Person Point of View: A majority of your essay should be written in third person, but you are permitted to use first person sparingly. Creative Path: For this path, students will create an 8-poem original collection and perform a voice and tone study on themselves and their collection. Their essay must meet the above requirements as well as the following path-specific requirements.
1. An 8-Poem Original Collection: Students who have selected the creative path must complete an 8-poem collection to analyze for this project. The student’s collection must include at least 2-3 form-specific poems, but the collection may have more than the allotted number of form-specific poems. Your collection will be graded and should display style and elements associated with poetry. Students will be provided with a rubric on how their collections will be graded. The poems must show the student was working and revising his or her work over the course of a 16 week-long 2000 level Poetry Course. The poems must be formatted properly, and each new poem should start on a new page. Students may also include a title for their overall collection but are not required to. The collection will not count toward page count. 2. Choose an Author who influenced your Poetic Voice: You must choose one author from this course who influenced your poetic voice (if you REALLY cannot find a single author who influenced your voice, you may choose someone not from this course, but must have instructor approval—as a heads up, Rupi Kauer and Dr. Suess will not be granted instructor approval.) You should include how this poet influenced your voice, but a large percentage of the paper should not focus on the author 3. A Peer Review with their assigned Partner: Complete a peer review for the final project with a partner assigned by the instructor. Students must submit both the rough draft and essay to the
instructor. (These peer review sessions must be completed a week before the paper is due, and the students will not be given class time to complete this portion of the assignment.) 4. First Person Point of View: You may use first person, but you must make sure that your paper does not become repetitive

Provide an illustration showing the different approaches to business ethics. You should then provide examples of ethical issues that could affect the operations. Also provide examples of “absolute” and “relative”ethics.

You are working for “Computing Supplies Ltd” and you are an idealist: you only buy Fair Trade, you work in a charity shop over the week-end, you often participate in charity runs, and every year you attend community beach cleaning events.

Although you’ve already tried to approach the subject of Corporate Social Responsibilities, nobody has taken it seriously. However, the company recently received bad publicity after a documentary showing the obsolete computers being stripped down for gold by 10 year-olds in Africa. To complicate things further, the computers are actually being burnt to collect the gold which creates dangerous fumes both for the environment and for the children.

In addition to this new issue, “Computing Supplies Ltd” pays the majority of its employee the minimum wage in order to maximize profit. Several employees have now joined a union and trying to negotiate a living wage to no avail, which has also caused some bad publicity.

Due to the bad publicity, 4 large clients have already terminated their contract and as a consequence, the revenue is down 15% compared to the previous year.

To make the matters worse, although this has not emerged in the news, “Computing Supplies Ltd” is planning on relocating some of its manufacturing to India in order to cut down costs, however it seems that it would not really benefit the locals as the subcontracting cost implies cuts, in particular relating to local wages and local use ofwater.

You believe that this time senior management will listen, but you know that you should prepare the ground before the meeting in order to make a successful proposal.

  • Provide an illustration showing the different approaches to business ethics. You should then provide examples of ethical issues that could affect the operations. Also provide examples of “absolute” and “relative”ethics.
  • Create a mind map of the stakeholders, and comment on the implications for each stakeholder when operating ethically, including potential conflicts between the stakeholders
  • Explain the regulatory framework for CSR

Provide a case study of an organization that has implemented Corporate Social Responsibility. You should:

  1. Briefly describe the changes that the organization , and why.
  2. Review the impact of CSR on their supply chain
  3. Analyse the impact of changes in CSR on business performance such as profitability, revenue, brand, etc.

Based on the scenario, write a report to suggest an implementation of CSR. You should:

  1. Research a current ethical issue in an organisation.
  2. Describe how business objectives are affected by ethical considerations.
  3. Report on how the business could improve the ethics of their operations.
  4. Recommend changes to CSR policy to benefit different stakeholders.

Show the reflection for a straight wave entering a curved barrier.  Draw your own example on loose leaf.  Make sure the barrier is not a semicircle only a shallow curve.

Refraction – Draw your own example on loose leaf using the question below.

Periodic waves in deep water have a wavelength of 1.9 cm. The waves then hit a boundary at an angle of 35° and the waves then have a wavelength of 1.5 cm in the shallow water. With what angle does the water propagate into the shallow water? Use the circle below to draw the waves in the ripple tank.

Diffraction – Draw your own example on loose leaf.

Draw a real world example of diffraction.  Explain your answer.

Interference – Use Given, required, equation, answer, sentence

In a ripple tank, a point on the second nodal line from the center is 52cm from one source and 45 cm from the other source. The sources are separated by 10.2 cm and vibrate in phase at 11.1 Hz.  Calculate:

    1. The wavelength of the waves.
    2. The speed of the waves.

Integrative learning is a general term for many different types of integration. Provide an example of integrative learning related to equations. What makes the learning integrative?

Reflect on the leadership style of either yourself or your supervisor. What leadership style do you have, or what leadership style does your supervisor have? What are the benefits and drawbacks of this style for your team?

Companies like Target and Walmart often works with outside consultants—people who are not employees of the company but who are hired on a contract basis to help with a specific project. As a Leadership Consultant, you’ve been hired by a large discount retail company to help the company improve its leadership structure and approach to management.

Take a look at the Organization Chart provided by the company.

  • Based on your knowledge of hierarchies, would you say that this team has tall structure or flat structure?

Underline your selection:

  • Tall Structure
  • Flat Structure

The company would like to improve the culture of its team and the quality of its work. Its leadership has provided you with a Process Chart detailing how it currently applies Human Resources best practices.

You have been asked to help improve the leadership style of the team leader in order to meet the team’s performance goals. The team leader has given you a description of what is most comfortable in terms of leading others.

  • Identify this leader’s style of leadership. Underline your selection:
  • Pacesetting
  • Visionary
  • Affiliative
  • Coaching
  • Coercive
  • Democratic

Explain your reasoning and list two benefits and two drawbacks to the style of leadership you identified as it

Apply the thinking in Steps 1-3 as if you were a Leadership Consultant hired by the company where you work or for a previous employer.

  • Review the organization chart for your company. Based on your knowledge of hierarchies, would you say that your company’s team has a tall structure or flat structure? How does this affect the way your team works? Explain your answer.
  • Consider the work conducted by the Human Resources team at your company. What steps of the Human Resources Cycle do they implement well? What steps of the Human Resources Cycle might be missing from your company or are not implemented as well as they could be? What is the effect of this on you and your team? Explain your answer.
  • Lastly, reflect on the leadership style of either yourself or your supervisor. What leadership style do you have, or what leadership style does your supervisor have? What are the benefits and drawbacks of this style for your team? What might you or your supervisor do to improve leadership? Explain your answer.
