How can the media be used to affect change in states that do not yet require mandatory reporting?

Assignment Details

You graduated from the AIU Criminal Justice Bachelor Program only 1 year ago, and you are now the victim rights advocate for your county prosecutor’s office. When you entered the criminal justice program, you never dreamed that you would have a career helping victims of crimes to navigate the criminal justice system. Your duties include everything from comforting a victim of a sexual assault to helping the families of murder victims. You already have had opportunities to help many people, and this type of work makes you feel proud of what you do. You are so proud, and that it is all you speak about to your families and friends. When Grace, the chief attorney, asks you to do something, you try to do your absolute best. The following assignment is no different.
Grace, the chief attorney (CA), asks you to draft a report that she will use in her presentation to the county commission. Her goal is to keep the victim witness assistant positions that currently exist and to increase the number of these positions in the future. She knows that providing victim advocacy is a relatively new concept to the criminal justice system and that the commissioners are not familiar with the concept that the criminal justice system should take a more active role with victims.
Grace needs you to provide information from 8 of the following 12 areas of discussion in 4 pages:
1.Give a definition of victimology.
2.What is the history of victimology, and how has it developed?
3.Explain how it is different from criminology, sociology, or psychology.
4. Who established the first safe houses for battered women? Where and when were these safe houses established?
5.Who established the first rape crisis centers? Where and when were these centers established?
6.How has the civil rights movement contributed to antidiscrimination efforts and the establishment of hate crime legislation and policy?
7.What role have children’s rights groups played in highlighting the problems that child victims face in the criminal justice system?
8.Which organizations might she contact that provide specific advocacy for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and homicide?
9.What services are not provided by government crime compensation programs?
10.Explain the need for all states to require mandatory reporting by religious organizations of child abuse by clergy.
11. How can the media be used to affect change in states that do not yet require mandatory reporting?
12. Research the clergy abuse in a state of your choice, and answer the following:
If mandatory reporting exists, how long has this been a requirement? What organizations are involved in tracking and helping the victims with this type of abuse?
If mandatory reporting does not exist, what alternative processes exist for reporting clergy abuse?
Use the library, Internet, and other resources available to you to conduct your research. Provide APA citations and references.

What warrants are implicit in your argument? Will they be acceptable to the person who reads your paper, or should you provide backing?

B. Writing Assignment: An Argument about a Literary Work The purpose of this assignment is to discover an issue, make a claim, and write about your interpretation of a story. Edgar Allen Poe is well known for exploring the issues of guilt and punishment in his fiction. Poe’s story presents these issues in a particularly complex way. In order to determine exactly what claim Poe is making about these issues, undertake the following steps:

1. When you have finished reading the story, freewrite for five minutes to capture your original thoughts and reactions.

2. As a class, discuss answers to the following questions:

a. What is this story about? What issues are raised by this story?

b. What is the perspective of the narrator in this story? What makes it difficult to identify with this perspective?

c. Write a claim made by this story; then help list a few of these claims on the board. Which of these claims could be supported with evidence from the text? Which would you like to write about? Write your claim. Read with the class some of these claims.

3. Answer the next four questions to plan your paper.

a. What evidence from the text can you use to support your claim (examples, quotations, etc.)? Underline it.

b. What warrants are implicit in your argument? Will they be acceptable to the person who reads your paper, or should you provide backing?

c. Would your paper be more convincing if you included a rebuttal? What would it be?

d. Will your claim be more acceptable if you qualify it? How would you do that?

Test the overall significance of the model by conducting an F test (P-value or significance of F). What does the significance of F (or lack there off) imply?

1.What is the Sample Regression Equation ? (Answer this question based on YOUR Excel Summary Output).

  1. Which of the Independent variables are significant? Why?  Explain.  Use α = 0.05 in ALL questions. Use only the p-value to explain your answers (No need to go to t tables).
  2. Test the overall significance of the model by conducting an F test (P-value or significance of F). What does the significance of F (or lack there off) imply?
  3. Comment on the Goodness of the Fit (Hint, you look, not at r square like in simple regression, rather, you look at the adjusted r-square).
  4. Comment on the Normality assumption for the residuals for this model. In other word, has the normality assumption been satisfied?  Explain your answer (Hint: you need to run Excel’s Histogram feature for Column of the Residuals. I need to see your Histogram in your Excel file and in here).

Assignment 1: Position Paper One – Media and Society

This is the first of two (2) position papers based on the following scenario to be completed in this course.

Imagine that you are running for a state office (e.g., governor, senator, or Congressional representative) and you have to prepare a position paper for a debate on controversial issues in the news. (Select one (1) of the topics addressed in the first four weeks of this class.) Remember that you are addressing a significant segment of your state’s population and you want to be elected to public office, so your topic will have to have a broad appeal, such as the importance of family values, the fair treatment of women in the workplace (equal pay for equal work), the treatment of minorities, and the media and one’s self-image, among other topics from those chapters.

You will want your position paper to demonstrate critical thinking, sound logic, valid claims, personal passion, and credible support that is cited correctly because the paper will be provided to the news media before the debate and will be scrutinized by the media and reported on regarding these criteria.

Write a two-page paper in which you:

  1. Introduce your position using a thesis statement in the first paragraph, including a quote, question, or statistic from your reliable sources and an overview of the main points you will cover. (It’s important to grab the audience’s interest and inform the audience of what the main and support points are.)
  2. Provide two or three (2-3) major points to support your thesis statement. (Put each major point in a separate paragraph.)
  3. Provide one (1) paragraph in which you identify and answer an expected argument against your view.
  4. Organize arguments and support your claims effectively.
  5. Demonstrate personal passion for your position and critical thinking with persuasive language, sound logic, valid claims, and credible support for the claims.
  6. Use two to three (2-3) credible and reliable sources (in addition to the textbook) about current events, which have been published in the last five (5) years and are cited correctly in the position paper. Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Apply critical thinking skills to the analysis of issues involving mass media and society.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in media and society.
  • Write clearly and concisely about media and society using proper writing mechanics.
