You are asked to see Mr. Basset, who is 80 years old and has recently lost his wife. His children do not live nearby, but Mr. Basset sees them on holidays. Mr. Basset has had an unexplained weight loss of 20 pounds in 3 months. He is taking medication for hypertension and arthritis.
Mr. Basset reports that his wife did most of the cooking and he has limited cooking skills. He usually has cereal with milk and coffee for breakfast and soup for a second meal later in the day. He eats crackers throughout the day if he is hungry. In addition, Mr. Basset has ill-fitting dentures and claims that food just does not taste the same. He is also on a limited budget. More than anything, however, Mr. Basset is lonely.

5. Examine figure 2.57 in Brandon & Kaplan which shows a TEM diffraction pattern from a single grain of α-Fe (BCC Fe). Examine the apparent symmetry of the pattern (note spot diam is used to indicate the intensity of the diffracted beams) – what is the zone axis for this pattern? (hint:the diffraction pattern MUST reflect AT LEAST the symmetry of the real crystal along that direction but could appear to be higher symmetry. Index the pattern, remembering the following rules:

  • The zone axis (vector that the e-beam is travelling along) points straight out of the page and is centered in the center of the pattern
  • The in-plane vectors to the diffraction spots are the momentum transfer vectors and reciprocal lattice vectors ∆k=G. Since the zone axis is normal to the page and all the G vectors are in plane, the dot products of G*zone axis vector must be zero.
  • The radius from pattern center to each spot is the magnitude of the G vector times a scale factor. So you can take ratios of these radii and invert them to get the ratios of d-spacings in real space.
  • The d-spacing as function of hkl for a cubic crystal is equation 2.38 in B&K book.

Pick A Rate Law, Any Rate Law

The Scenario:

Professor Z. O. Lite and his fabulously talented group of undergraduate chemical engineers at UND have developed a new catalyst.  In preliminary studies it has dramatically increased the rate at which  p-xylene is formed from the reaction of toluene and methanol.

Several different reaction mechanisms have been postulated that suggest the following possible rate laws:

Your Assignment:

Use experimental rate-pressure data from a differential reactor to find a suitable rate law and determine all relevant rate constants in Arrhenius form (k1=A1e-E1/RT)

You have $10,000 available for lab work.  Kinetic rate data for the Toluene + Methanol reaction can be purchased from XYZ Consulting for $200 / run (one run = one data point, not one set of 8 data points).  Pick your data carefully so that you don’t run out of money!  Fill out a Rate Data Request Form (available on Blackboard) with the experimental conditions you want to run and submit it through Blackboard (Project Groups > XYZ Consulting > File Exchange.  Results will be posted (to your group file exchange on Blackboard) daily Monday-Friday, beginning Feb 23.
