Is That Ethical?

In the Learning Activity “Identifying Ethical Issues,” choose one of the rules listed in Figure 1.1. Then, provide an example of a time at work when you followed the selected rule. What was the outcome? Was it successful? Why or why not? Now, provide an example of a time at work when you did not follow one of the rules listed in the chart. What was the outcome? Using suggestions from the reading, what would you do differently next time, if anything? Finally, based on what you learned from the reading, what steps might you take in the future to improve your integrity at work?

You have discovered an artifact (it may be any painting, sculpture, literary text, musical composition, or building discussed in the textbook from one of the cultures we have studied). In your essay you surmise what kind of culture created this artifact. What does it tell You about its creators?

Humanities Question

Your essay should be

  • 3 and half page SINGLE SPACED in length
  • MLA format, including citations and a works cited page with a minimum of eight sources . Grammatically and stylistically appropriate for college level writing

Option 1 – a standard, college level research paper.

Some possible topics for Option 1:

  • A focus on a specific culture, i.e. nineteenth century impressionism in art, literature and music
  • A focus on a specific indicator of culture, i.e. architecture and how it reveals the culture of the mid twentieth century

. A comparison of two cultures to reveal how each is an adaptation to and a reflection of its attitudes, environment, etc. For example, the Renaissance vs the 18th Century:

How the Cultural Artifacts of the Two Periods Reveal the Attitudes of their Populations.

Option 2 – a less standard possibility – a first person, possibly a narrative account:

You have discovered an artifact (it may be any painting, sculpture, literary text, musical composition, or building discussed in the textbook from one of the cultures we have studied). In your essay you surmise what kind of culture created this artifact. What does it tell You about its creators? Consider values, religion, history, level of technical expertise, political structure… Be imaginative. You do not need to refer to the actual culture that did create the artifact. Your surmises could, in fact, be completely wrong. If they are based in the artifact, then your interpretation is valid.

For example, you find a Word War 2 propaganda poster from Japan. You have no knowledge of Japan or World War 2. What can you learn from studying that artifact? What kind of culture would create it and why would they create it? What does it tell you about its creators” attitude toward themselves and the world?

Make sure that the majority of the essay is a discussion of the artifact, not the story of how you got there.

Creative Writing Question

Objective

Verbal delivery is only a part of how a message is delivered and received. We communicate through more than just words. We also use hand gestures, facial expressions, posture, and body language which is referred to as nonverbal communication. Non-verbal communication complements the verbal

messages we are delivering to our audience by adding to its meaning.

Instructions

We have been learning about non-verbal communication this week, and now it’s time to observe it in the real world!

Think about a time when you were in a conversation or on a video call with someone and they were talking about one thing, but perhaps their facial expressions or body language were delivering a different message.

Perhaps you have even noticed this about your own patterns of communication. Consider what their facial expressions were saying, what type of emotion did you see? Were there feelings or attitudes (positive, loving, excited) that you noticed? For this assignment, you will use your knowledge of non-verbal communication to conduct an observation of an interaction between two or more people.

Follow the steps below for details about the required components of your assignment.

Step 1

In Step 1, you will take some time to observe an interaction between two or more people whom you are unfamiliar with for a 5 to 15 minute period. Reflect on the non-verbal communication and document any or all of the nonverbal behaviors discussed in class that you see. This is including but not limited to gestures, posture, body orientation, facial expressions, eye contact patterns, haptics, proxemics, appearance, etc.

You may visit a public place where you are likely to observe people interacting or you can watch a new TV show episode or unfamiliar movie with the volume muted and captions off.

Connect with your instructor if you have an idea that is not listed here.

You should be very specific in identifying not only the nonverbal behaviors but also the function they serve in the interaction.

In a typed document, provide an overview of the context of your scenario. Explain the following:

  • What was the setting of your observation?
  • What type of relationship do you believe these individuals have?
  • Was this a positive or negative interaction? Why
  • What are some things that stood out to you?

Now that you have provided an overview of the context, let’s move to step 2.

Step 2

For the second step in this assignment, let’s consider the context of the interaction(s) you observed.

In the same typed document from Step 1, also answer all of the following questions:

  • What specific forms of non-verbal communication were observed and provide some specific examples?
  • What would you suggest to the participants that you observed to change in the future in terms of their nonverbal communications or behavior? If you have no suggestions, explain why you feel no changes are needed.
  • What lessons can you apply in your own non-verbal communication in the future?
  • Which of the non-verbal behaviors displayed did you connect with the most? Why?
  • Now that you have completed Step 2, let’s consider visuals to further enhance your thoughts.

Step 3

Now, include 3 to 4 supporting images that display the non-verbal communication that you have observed and enhance your thoughts of those observations. Some of these images can include non-verbal behaviors such as gestures that were impactful to you, facial expressions that show emotion, or posture that conveyed confidence. You do not have to take the images; they can be found through different images resources on the Internet.

Axelrod’s Formula for Setting Consulting Fees

How to charge to earn $100,000:

  • $100,000 / 200 days = $500 per day base rate
  • $500 per day base rate + $500 per day overload = $1000 per

day

  • $1000 + 25% add-on for profit = $1250 per day • Daily consulting rate = $1250 per day

Bleich’s “Three Times” Rule

To calculate the ballpark amount you will need to bill to meet operating expenses, triple your desired income to determine how much you need to bill annually. For example, to earn $50,000 a year, you need to bill $150,000 per year.
