Addressing Racial Inequality in Homeownership: Dissecting the Crisis and Detangling the Divides in the Black Homeownership Gap

Develop and present a quasi-proposal for your intended research or quantitative example that you have been working with for this course.

While the most important elements in any proposal are the fundamentals of the problem, purpose, and research questions, the bulk of the assignment will be the methodology. Organize your quasi-proposal for this assignment by subheadings. The actual headings and information that need to be included depend on the method used to collect the data. In studies involving the collection of primary data, you want to be sure to include the details of your sampling plan, measurement of variables, the actual data collection procedure, plan of analysis, and justification for your decisions.

Identify some significant perspectives on the global impact of World War II that Halloran’s short video brings to light. Highlight nations other than the U.S. that you never encountered in your WWII studies.

Background to Historical Context of the Second World War (1939-1945).

Fascination with World War II is widespread in the United States. It is a common topic on the History Channel and at the movies. Many families have stories from their elders about wartime service. Ask your elders soon about World War II because those who remember the war firsthand are fewer and fewer. Those who fought the war have been called “The Greatest Generation” of the twentieth century. They made sacrifices which unfortunately cost them their lives, their longterm health, and took their vital years of their youth. Some people say that the Covid pandemic is the biggest national disaster since World War II. So perhaps this week’s topic is one that is somewhat familiar to you.

Prepare to be a little surprised by what you learn about World War II this week. Next week after spring break, Samantha Power will guide us to how the world began to understand the preparations for genocide unfolding in Europe in the 1930s.
This week, we will take a global view of World War II to see how the American experience compares to other wartime combattants. Briefly stated, the war was hell for everyone even though we have some hero-worship and nostalgia for the people of those times. The U.S. death toll was substantial but it was far surpassed in other parts of the world. Very little combat occurred on American soil and most civilians lived safely, except for those at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and in the West Coast internment camps (primarily Japanese Americans). Nothing could be further from the experience of people in Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa.

Neil Halloran’s video “The Fallen of World War II” from 2016 takes a data-driven approach to the global conflict so that we can see it truly as a worldwide war. His digital animation shows a real talent from bringing out the human element embedded in the data. You’ll be surprised at the story that emerges. Last week’s video by Jennings called “London Can Take It” made his short film for the British Ministry of Information, the official news source of the government. It is a micro-history compared to “The Fallen” as it deals with 18 hours in London during the Blitz. Narrated by American journalist Quentin Reynolds, it chronicled when German bombers deliberately targeted vulnerable civilians.

The staggering death toll of World War II owes to the length of the war, and to the new technologies of destruction. Aerial bombing of cities was a military objective used by both the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan) and the Allies (Britain, Soviet Union, USA). High explosives could now be carried in heavier planes and bombers could fly longer distances. They carried conventional bombs, fire bombs that incinerated and melted away their civilian victims, and this war used the first atomic bombs by the U.S. in Japan. While millions served courageously in uniform, it was a war when the lines between soldier and civilian, warfront and homefront, were blurred and erased.

Neil Halloran, The Fallen of World War II, 2016

Identify some significant perspectives on the global impact of World War II that Halloran’s short video brings to light. You might want to highlight nations other than the U.S. that you never encountered in your WWII studies. Or you might want to highlight some U.S. experience that you had never heard about before. Emphasize three topics to show your understanding of Halloran’s point of vew about critical thinking on World War II.

Write an introductory paragraph with at least 150 words that clearly explains the topic, the importance of further research, and ethical implications.

Introduction, Thesis Statement, and Annotated Bibliography

Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review the Introductions & Conclusions (Links to an external site.) and Annotated Bibliography (Links to an external site.) web pages, and Evaluating Sources (Links to an external site.) and Annotated Bibliography (Links to an external site.) tutorials.

Reflect: Reflect back on the Week 1 discussion in which you shared with the class the global societal issue that you would like to further address. Explore critical insights that were shared by your peers and/or your instructor on the topic chosen and begin your search for scholarly sources with those insights in mind.

Write: For this assignment, review the Annotated Bibliography Formatting Guidelines  Download Annotated Bibliography Formatting Guidelinesand address the following prompts:

  • Introductory paragraph to topic (refer to the Final Paper guidelines for your topic selection).
    • Write an introductory paragraph with at least 150 words that clearly explains the topic, the importance of further research, and ethical implications.
  • Thesis statement.
    • Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the solution to the problem that you will argue or prove in the Week 5 Final Paper. (A thesis statement should be a concise, declarative statement. The thesis statement must appear at the end of the introductory paragraph.)
  • Annotated bibliography.
    • Develop an annotated bibliography to indicate the quality of the sources you have read.
    • Summarize in your own words how the source contributes to the solution of the global societal issue for each annotation.
    • Address fully the purpose, content, evidence, and relation to other sources you found on this topic (your annotation should be one to two paragraphs long—150 words or more.
    • Include no less than five scholarly sources in the annotated bibliography that will be used to support the major points of the Final Paper.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking skills by accurately interpreting evidence used to support various positions of the topic.

Discuss, compare, and contrast two sociological paradigms (theories/perspectives) of your choice (i.e. functionalism, conflict, symbolic interactionism) by selecting a social issue and providing an analysis from each perspective.

Major Paradigms Paper (25%):

For your midterm assignment, you will discuss, compare, and contrast two sociological paradigms (theories/perspectives) of your choice (i.e. functionalism, conflict, symbolic interactionism) by selecting a social issue and providing an analysis from each perspective.

The social issue can be from a current event, a social theme or trend you observe, or even an issue from a movie, television show, or book. Since the focus of this paper is on showing your understanding of the theories, you should not waste space summarizing the social issue/movie/scene/etc. Instead, you should briefly (around 2-3 sentences) describe the issue/topic, followed by sociologically analyzing the issue and comparing/contrasting your two paradigms’ perspectives on the issues. This will involve providing examples of/from the issue followed by the analysis/comparison/contrast of the example. Your final result in this paper will show your comprehension of two major sociological paradigms.

Evaluate economic conditions that influence company performance. Consider political, environmental, currency (money), global economics, and government influences on economic conditions.

Johnson and Johnson Company Analysis

Evaluate economic conditions that influence company performance. Consider political, environmental, currency (money), global economics, and government influences on economic conditions. ( See my post about PESTLE)

Compare market conditions with the company’s performance for 2017. Conclude how the market conditions that year influenced the company’s performance, such as interest rates, Federal Reserve Bank monetary policy changes, or other market conditions relevant to the company you selected.

Analyze year-over-year performance from 2016 and 2017. Consider key metrics or ratios such as trailing PE ratio, forward PE ratio, price to book, return on assets, and return on equity in your conclusions. (Do not just summarize a piublicly available report. Doing so will result in a reduced grade)

In a four- to five-page paper, explain why situational leadership theory is useful and relevant in developing an effective leadership culture. Describe the three theories of situational leadership and what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of each theory when leading staff in the organizational environment.

Situational Leadership Theory and Organizational Leadership

As the new top-level executive of a medium-sized corporation, you have noticed that the leadership culture in the organization has been ineffective, which has lowered employee morale. To change the leadership culture you have decided to discuss this issue with all the managers and supervisors in the organization. Prior to meeting with all the managers and supervisors, you have decided that you need to develop a how-to guide on effective leadership.

In a four- to five-page paper (excluding the title and references pages), explain why situational leadership theory is useful and relevant in developing an effective leadership culture. Describe the three theories of situational leadership and what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of each theory when leading staff in the organizational environment.

Write no more than 750 words, detailing: • Very Brief case description: What happened? relevant facts about the case, i.e. chronology of events as relevant to the forensic technology under scrutiny.

Forensic technologies

For this assessment, i select three (N=3) forensic technologies

  • 1.DNA,
  • 2.Fingerprints (and other impressions)
  • 3.Bodily Fluids

And research a relevant case study of a criminal investigation that makes explicit use of them (a total of 3 case studies, one for each of the chosen technology).

Once you have chosen the relevant technologies and cases, you should write no more than 750 words per case (+ or – 10%), 2,250 max overall, detailing:

• Very Brief case description: What happened? relevant facts about the case, i.e. chronology of events as relevant to the forensic technology under scrutiny

• Historical and jurisdictional context: Where and when? i.e. where the case took place and any relevant legislation, cultural practices as related to historical, geographical and social context.

• Limitations and critique: any controversies about the case, particularly focusing on the forensic technology in question as well as the sources of information used. You will need to draw on academic literature in order to understand and expose limitations.

• Sources of information used: Who says? (bare minimum of four sources per case, including minimum of one academic journal article). The sources need to be referenced in a bibliographic fashion. You need to use in-text citations throughout your case analysis. You must reference in Harvard style.

The most important thing about your portfolio is that you follow the guidelines and outline structure. Each of your three case studies needs to include:

  • • a brief description of the case
  • • a discussion of context
  • • a discussion of limitations and critiques
  • • a bibliography/list of references (5 reference each)

Considering the main points raised by various critics in response to the exhibition, what is considered successful and what is considered a failure or a shortcoming of the exhibition? Is there a consensus? Are there differences of opinion?

Assignment #4: Report on an Exhibition / Bibliography

• Select one of the exhibitions from the list provided (see next page)
• Research your exhibition in terms of:
content (which and how many artists, what works are in the show)
stated curatorial goals/argument (what does it try to accomplish?)
how was the show organized (thematic? groupings/sections? chronological?)
reception of the exhibition (what kind of critical response did the exhibition generate?)
venue/s (where is it shown?, does it travel to other venues?, is the reception different from venue to venue?)

• In addition to the catalogue of the exhibition, develop a bibliography on the chosen exhibition with a minimum of 8 entries of substantive writings. (Wikepedia entry does not count, nor does press releases.) You will likely have to review much more than 8 texts to get a full understanding of some of the artists in the show as well as the profile of the curator(s). Your bibliography, however, should be specific to the exhibition.
• Read all items on your bibliography to become familiar with the exhibition and its reception.
• Based on your research write a report (approx. 1200-2000 words) on your research material, which should be organized as follows:

I. Description of the exhibition (include basic facts: when, where, what, who, etc.)

II. Summary of the arguments or goals of the curators

III. Identify three of the strongest and different critical evaluations of the exhibition among your bibliography entries and re-state the author’s views in your words. (You can approach this like an annotated bibliography.)

IV. Considering the main points raised by various critics in response to the exhibition, what is considered successful and what is considered a failure or a shortcoming of the exhibition? Is there a consensus? Are there differences of opinion?
