Your supervisor has asked you to configure a new system using existing configurations. He said to use either an ARM template or a blueprint. What would you suggest and why? When do you think it is appropriate to use an ARM template and when is it not?

What is science? More specifically, what makes something science? How is science distinguished from non-science or pseudoscience?

Nature of science

What is science? More specifically, what makes something science? How is science distinguished from non-science or pseudoscience?

These questions have been the source of debate for many centuries, even millennia. Two thousand years ago, natural philosophers disputed the very nature of matter. Was matter continuous, infinite, and divisible as claimed by Plato, Aristotle, and their contemporaries? Or was matter discontinuous, finite, and indivisible, so that a certain smallest, most fundamental unit could be attained, as claimed by Leucippus, Democritus, and few others. Over 2000 years ago, Leucippus coined a term for this fundamental and smallest unit of matter – atomos, yet these ideas were largely ignored for millennia.

As listed in our text, the main steps of the process are: Observation, Hypothesis, Experiments, and coming to a Conclusion whether your hypothesis has been verified or disprovem.

The idea of the scientific method requires that claims are:

Falsifiable (refutable – able to be disproved) and Repeatable.
These are often the criteria used to help distinguish science from pseudoscience. The falsifiable nature of science dictates that the claim must be able to be disproved. We also note that science is a process of discovery, and part of that process of discovery requires the recognition of patterns (repeatability).

Note that in science, evidence may strongly suggest that a claim is true, but it does not explicitly prove it.

An example of a falsifiable claim is that the moon is made out of cheese. As silly as the claim is, we could gather a sample of the moon and – if it is not cheese – we have disproved the claim. Thus, the claim is scientific because it may be disproved through collection of evidence (data). Furthermore, the moon could be sampled repeatedly and we would still arrive at the same conclusion – the moon is not made out of cheese. A non-scientific claim cannot be disproved regardless of the evidence collected. For example, if I claim that a cubic meter of cheese exists on the moon, I have made a non-falsifiable claim because the claim cannot be readily refuted. It would be nearly impossible to sample every cubic meter of the moon, and thus the claim is not scientific.

Throughout this course you will be applying the scientific method in your laboratory work, and just as important as the above concepts, will be practicing lab safety techniques. Our Lab 1: Laboratory Safety goes over the very important lab safety procedures that you will want to adhere to throughout this course. In Lab 1 you will learn about many safety rules including: wearing the appropriate clothing, preventing contamination of your samples, wearing safety gear and handling chemicals appropriately, etc…

Instructions
Make sure to come up with a unique short Subject heading that describes your post and then you can return and reply to your post with your summary. Within your summary please construct a well-thought out response that addresses each of the following questions.

What makes one statement or claim science? Along these lines, how do you distinguish a scientific claim from a non-scientific claim, or pseudoscience?
Construct a claim that you consider scientific and indicate how the claim meets the criteria for science – that it is falsifiable and repeatable. Challenge your peers to either agree or disagree with the scientific nature of your claim.

After reading through Lab 1, pick a safety rule that was covered and write a few sentences explaining how you will apply that rule in your lab work.
Be sure to state any references you used along with proper citations.

Identify a health care issue that is currently being discussed at the state or national level. Summarize your representative’s position on your selected health care issue. Explain why you agree or disagree with your representative’s position.

Letter to a Legislator

Step 1: Identify One of Your Representatives
For representatives at the national level, you can find the name and address of the legislators that represent you at the following:

  • U.S. House of Representatives.
  • U.S. Senate.

To identify the names and contact information of state and local representatives, visit Common Cause and put in your address.

Step 2: Research Where Your Representative Stands
After choosing your topic and representative, research where your representative stands on your chosen health care issue as well as where the medical profession (professional organizations, practicing medical professionals, patients, and other advocates) stands on the issue.

Use GovTrack.us to look for your chosen representative and do some digging on their position on the topic.

To research where the medical profession stands, you may want to look at the following websites in addition to searching the Strayer Library for publications from specific medical professional groups on the topic.

  • HHS.gov.
  • Healthy People 2020 – Topic Areas at a Glance.
  • World Health Organization.

Step 3: Write the Letter
Once you have identified both your topic from Healthy People 2020 and the representative you will write your letter. Keep in mind this is a business letter and will require specific formatting. You will need to be sure you have the name, date, and address of the representative at the top of the page and include your name and address at the close.

Take a look a look at some of these sample letters for reference:
Write a Letter to Your Legislator.
Sample Letter to Legislator.
Template Letter to a Legislator [PDF]
Sample Letter to Legislators Issue: Nurse Workforce Development Programs (Title VIII).
In the contents of your letter, please include the following:

Identify a health care issue that is currently being discussed at the state or national level.
Summarize your representative’s position on your selected health care issue.
Explain why you agree or disagree with your representative’s position.

Is it true that the “bottom line” of a business is profit and profit alone? In business, are there other, less tangible goals that are intrinsic to—and just as important as—making money?

Morality and ethics

Use the following 2 starting points to develop your essay on morality and ethics:
The article by Jay Feldman: Sunday Dialogue: How Corporations Behave
Alfred North Whitehead’s controversial statement, “What is morality in any given time and place? It is what the majority then and there happen to like and immorality is what they dislike” (as cited in BrainyQuote, 2021).
Think about those two perspectives, and then select 1 of the focal questions in Part 1 of the assignment. Your response to the selected focal question will guide you to formulate a thesis statement.
Discuss the article and Whitehead’s statement in the introduction, body, and conclusion of the essay.
Locate and utilize at least 2 credible sources to support the arguments presented in your paper. Make sure you cite them appropriately within your paper, and list them in APA format on your Reference page.
Ensure that your paper is 4–5 pages in length, not counting the Title page and Reference page. In accordance with APA formatting requirements, your paper should include a Title and Reference page, should be double-spaced, and should include a running head and page numbers.

Part 1: Formulating the Philosophical Thesis Statement
Select only 1 of the following focal questions to answer to help formulate your thesis statement:

Businesses can have ethical standards, but businesses are not moral agents. Do you agree or disagree?
Is it true that the “bottom line” of a business is profit and profit alone?
In business, are there other, less tangible goals that are intrinsic to—and just as important as—making money?
In a business environment, why should people be moral as individuals?
Why should a corporation or organization be moral?
Could you apply the first formulation of Kant’s categorical imperative to a business environment?

Part 2: Developing the Essay
Identify your thesis statement (argument claim) within the introduction of your paper.
Conduct research using library resources. Please use the article presented above (Sunday Dialogue: How Corporations Behave) as well as 2 additional sources.
Outline your essay, considering deontological ethics, teleological ethics, moral objectivism, and ethical relativism in your argument.
Provide at least 3 valid reasons to support your argument. Remember to think critically here—there likely are reasons that may not be evident at first.

Also, be sure to include the following in your essay:
Use of explanations of philosophical concepts—such as utilitarianism, categorical imperatives, process philosophy, moral relativism, moral absolutism, ethical relativism, moral objectivism, deontological ethics, or teleological ethics—to structure your essay and provide evidence to support your claims.
Remember, you can use these concepts to argue for or against a particular statement (e.g., from a deontological perspective, something might be “right,” whereas that same thing may be “wrong” from a utilitarian perspective).

Your argument and reasons (claims) should be defended by philosophical concepts supported by evidence, which is based on your research.

Part 3: Conclusion

Consider morality and ethics from the perspective of Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy and Immanuel Kant’s universal categorical imperative. After conducting your research and writing your essay, could you conclude that businesses can have ethical standards, despite the fact that businesses are not moral agents? Explain why or why not. Sum up your argument based on the evidence presented in the paper

Compare and contrast the theories: How do they differ? How are they similar? Explain how the use of each theory can enhance digital communications when developing online relationships.

Implementation Plan

Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal: Implementation Plan

In 1,250-1,500 words, discuss the implementation plan for your evidence-based practice project proposal. When required, create the appropriate form, table, image, or graph to fully illustrate that aspect of the intervention plan and include them in an appendix of your paper. You will use the implementation plan, including the associated documents in your appendices, in the Topic 8 assignment, during which you will synthesize the various aspects of your project into a final paper detailing your evidence-based practice project proposal.

Include the following:

Describe the setting and access to potential subjects. If there is a need for a consent or approval form, then one must be created. Include a draft of the form as an appendix at the end of your paper.

Create a timeline. Make sure the timeline is general enough that it can be implemented at any date. Based on the timeline you created, describe the amount of time needed to complete this project. Include a draft of the timeline as an appendix at the end of your paper.

Develop a budget and resource list. Consider the clinical tools or process changes that would need to take place. Based on the budget and resource list you developed: (a) describe the resources (human, fiscal, and other) or changes needed in the implementation of the solution; (b) outline the costs for personnel, consumable supplies, equipment (if not provided by the institute), computer-related costs (librarian consultation, database access, etc.), and other costs (travel, presentation development). Include a draft of the budget and resource list as an appendix at the end of your paper.

Explain whether you would select a qualitative or quantitative design to collect data and evaluate the effectiveness of your evidence-based practice project proposal. Provide rationale to support your selection.

Describe the methods and instruments (questionnaire, scale, or test) to be used for monitoring the implementation of the proposed solution. Include the method or instrument as an appendix at the end of your paper.

Explain the process for delivering the intervention and indicate if any training will be needed.

Discuss the stakeholders that are needed to implement the plan.

Consider all of the aspects of your implementation plan and discuss potential barriers or challenges to the plan. Propose strategies for overcoming these.

Write a set of instructions in which you explain to a specific audience how to perform a procedure. Think of a process that involves multiple steps and multiple groups of steps and that will require warnings.

The Essentials of Technical Communication

Instructions
Before you begin this assignment, make sure you have read and thought about Chapters 4, 5, and 10 in The Essentials of Technical Communication
Write a set of instructions in which you explain to a specific audience how to perform a procedure. Think of a process that involves multiple steps and multiple groups of steps and that will require warnings. Look for more challenging topics than changing flat tires or washing dishes.

Use these guidelines:
Your purpose is to make these instructions as clear, readable, and usable as possible.
In a separate paragraph at the front of your instructions, define the audience in terms of its knowledge, background, and need for the instructions. Label this separate paragraph “Audience.”
Organize your instructions into at least three sections with clear, informative headings.
Provide an introduction to the instructions in which you identify or define the procedure that you are going to present and list the main tasks or phases you are going to discuss. (This should not be combined with your “Audience” statement.)

Use at least one numbered vertical list to indicate a step-by-step sequence.
Include at least one warning or caution statement. The warning needs to be a clearly defined statement with its own heading.
Give your instruction set a clear and descriptive title.
Demonstrate some elements of thoughtful document design (heading format, font choices, capitalization, spacing, overall design, etc.) to make your instructions visually appealing.
Carefully define any potentially unfamiliar terms you use in your instructions.
Carefully describe any objects that are essential to your instructions.
Do not use any images in these instructions (we will get to graphics in future assignments).

Identify the 3 forms of digital communication that you most frequently employ to maintain your closest relationships, and the 3 forms of digital communication that you frequently use to maintain your weak ties and acquaintance relationships. Explain your reasoning for why each is effective within your noted relational context.

Anonymity

Anonymity is one of the key characteristics of cyber communication. Is anonymity an advantage or disadvantage when it comes to forming and maintaining online relationships? Justify your stance.
Different forms of cyber communication might help facilitate different types of relational maintenance.

Identify the 3 forms of digital communication that you most frequently employ to maintain your closest relationships, and the 3 forms of digital communication that you frequently use to maintain your weak ties and acquaintance relationships. Explain your reasoning for why each is effective within your noted relational context.

This week, you read diverse materials regarding online relationship formation and maintenance. Identify: 1) the most important take-away point that you gleaned from the readings, and 2) the “muddiest point” from the readings, meaning the point or concept that that is still the most unclear or difficult to comprehend after completing the readings. In your response posts, attempt to help clarify each other’s “muddy points.”

Describe what quantitative research is in your own words. Then discuss how and what type of Quantitative Data you would collect related to your POI.

Quantitative Analysis Research Paper

Step 1: Write an introduction to the topic and end the paragraph with a thesis statement. The introduction should include 2-3 attention grabbing statements and end with 1 concise thesis statement that describes the overall purpose of your paper.

Step 2: Describing Quantitative Research
Describe what quantitative research is in your own words. Then discuss how and what type of Quantitative Data you would collect related to your POI. For example, if I was interested in changing a policy on pain scales in the pediatric setting, I might collect data on how many pain scales are used in the facility, what pain scores are and at what point a pain score (data) warrants medication administration to a patient and their expected level of relief. It is not necessary to include the design of a study in this section.

Step 3: Appraisal Tools, Studies and Matrix

Locate your 2 quantitative studies so you can appraise each separately with the tool below. Students must include: one (1) meta-analysis or systematic review AND one (1) single study, e.g. randomized control trials, quasi-experimental studies, correlation or observational studies, case control or retrospective studies, cohort studies. Mixed studies may be used for the single study, but you can NOT use it for the next assignment. Once you have found 2 different quantitative study designs as specified, complete the appraisal tool for each study using the following link.

Step 4: Article Discussion

Use the information from your appraisal tool to discuss in detail the following information for each study:

Purpose , research design and methodology (steps, procedures and strategies for gathering and analyzing data) used in each study

Data Collection describing the procedures devleoped to guide the collection of data in each study

Concepts of validity, reliability and other related terms that are applicable to each study. A full discussion of the terms and support directly from each study is expected. Use the text book required readings to assist with this section.

Step 5: Results and clinical implications
Level of evidence and quality of evidence ratings (according to tool). Discuss what the level and quality ratings mean in relation to strength of the evidence and decision to sue (or not use) this information to guide practice. You need to fully support this section from evidence in the study and other resources. Understanding the levels of evidence tells you about the type of study performed, design, methods, etc. and if those findings should be applied to your own practice area. Grade of Recommendation is important because it helps you make a judgement about the quality of evidence; together they impact the decision about implementation into practice.

The following tool can be used to help you determine strength and quality, but this information is also listed directly on the tool John Hopkins Evidence Rating Scale

Step 5: Applicability to Practice and Future Research
Discuss how the two studies may influence your practice by supporting how the findings can influence at least three (3) fo the Institute of Medicine Aims: safety, efficiency, effectiveness, patient-centered, timely, and equity. You must first discuss what the aim means first. Then, show how the aim can be met through the recommendations from the article that apply to your practice setting.

Step 6: Conclusion
