If you were to conduct the project you have described, how would you go about doing it?  What kind of data would you need? Who would your subjects be?  Would you use a quantitative or a qualitative method?

Proposal- research

More Options:

Option 1:  Overview of Research

An alternative option is to write a paper that focuses on a substantive topic of your choice that is relevant to the seminar.  Appropriate topics might be factors explaining current trends in the development of specific theoretical approaches, the gender patterns, the factors affecting the quality of life or the effect of early life disadvantage on later life outcomes in terms of health, income security, mortality, life expectancy etc.  This paper option is particularly appropriate for students in their first year of college who are interested in developing greater expertise on a particular subject based on their majors.

Option 2:  Research Proposal

Using one of your expertise/major as a starting point, write a research proposal. Research papers should be based on one of the topics covered in the assigned readings or on a closely related subject in marriage and the family.

  • Part I: Literature Review: The class readings should be the take-off point for a thorough literature review on your chosen topic.  The literature review should comprise approximately two-thirds of the paper.
  • Part II: Identifying a Researchable Question: After you have reviewed the literature, identify a researchable question.  For example, you might ask, “which theory best fits patterns of racial and gender inequality in people’s life, the theory of cumulative disadvantage or labeling theory?” In describing what other studies have contributed to your question, you will be providing the groundwork for your own project.  The main purpose of your project should be to identify a “gap” in the literature where you might be able to make an original contribution.  The gap may take the form of 1) a theoretical debate about issues that have not been resolved, 2) an issue where you choose to challenge an author’s interpretation, 3) a subject on which there is a lack of empirical evidence.  In this case, your “hook” would be the need for more research on a given topic related to marriage and the family.  An example might be the lack of comparative research on long-term care or the neglect of Asians in studies of cumulative disadvantage varies by gender and race/ethnicity.
  • Part III: Describing a Research Method:  The final section of your paper should be devoted to developing a proposal for a research project.  If you were to conduct the project you have described, how would you go about doing it?  What kind of data would you need? Who would your subjects be?  Would you use a quantitative or a qualitative method?  You do not need to go into great detail here but you should think about whether this project actually is feasible.

Option 3:  Empirical Analysis

The third option is to write a paper using original data.  The ultimate goal would be to eventually present the paper at a professional meeting and/or to submit to a journal.  This option is most appropriate for advanced graduate students who want to work on a project for eventual publication and students who wish to work on a project in which they are already involved (e.g., their MA thesis or dissertation).  The model for this paper is a journal article.  Students should not attempt to write empirical papers if they do not have the methodological expertise to do so.

Data Suggestions:

  1. United States Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov/) Poverty and Current Population Survey (CPS). The survey provides information on poverty in the U.S. This report will provide students with more data on the current problems of any population by gender and racial/ethnic groups.
  2. The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) website (https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR/) is the other suggested place to get data for your research. Please register their website and Sam Houston State University is one of their members.

Develop a Teacher Training Presentation, reading and researching everything you can find on your topic to present to a teacher audience.

Teacher Training Presentation Instructions

Reflect on all that you have learned about culturally reponsive teaching through your readings, discussions, and research throughout this course. You will develop a Teacher Training Presentation, reading and researching everything you can find on your topic to present to a teacher audience. You may select a new topic or a topic that you have already used in one of your previous papers or presentations within this course to further develop your understanding of a specific topic. Example topics could be: strategies for empowering students to share thoughts, delivering different forms of content through learning stations, integrating diverse work and study practices, fostering a sense of inclusion in the classroom, and understanding student learning needs and styles.

This presentation should be tailored for a new teacher orientation at the beginning of a school year, returning teacher beginning of the year professional development workshop, or possibly a presentation that you might deliver as part of a faculty meeting. You should think about the teacher audience (grade level, purpose of training, etc.) so you can customize your presentation to meet the needs of your audience.

The form or media you use (Voice over PowerPoint, YouTube, Screencaster, Office Mix, etc.) is entirely up to you as long as the information is presented in a professional manner. This should be a minimal of 30 minutes for your presentation.

Your training presentation and materials must include:

  • A clearly outlined topic and audience.
  • A rationale for choosing your topic (cannot just be personal; must have a teaching or training focus).
  • Clearly proposed strategies, best practices, research or training guidelines, including realistic goals and suggestions for the teacher audience.
  • A creative presentation mode: a PowerPoint with voice recording or even a YouTube video with supporting materials, a website or blog you have created, a very detailed handbook, or training materials that includes an audio component.
  • If giving a PowerPoint presentation, include an outline, agenda of time allotted (30 minutes), and speaker notes/transcript.
  • Handouts/training aids/website links to help paticipants with understanding.
  • Current APA formatting (citations and referencing).
  • A complete reference list including a minimal of 5 resources from your research (should support the citations in your work).

Based on the feedback, locate 3 or 4 additional references to build upon or strengthen a component of the literature review.

EDD 614 Mod 4- SLP

For your Session Long Project (SLP), you will focus on the development of your literature review. Each SLP will require you to locate additional resources to strengthen your literature review.

For this assignment, complete the following task:

1. Incorporate any feedback you received on the draft literature review submitted for SLP 3.

2. Complete the following:

a. Based on the feedback, locate 3 or 4 additional references to build upon or strengthen a component of the literature review. You may use sources from your annotated bibliography or other credible sources.

b. Based on the feedback, revise the organization of your literature review. Continue to refer to the Oliver (2012) reading, which offers strategies to structure and refine your literature review.

• Incorporate all the feedback from your instructor. This includes recommended changes, modifications, or additional information necessary to improve your document.

• Use the track changes function in Word to assist your instructor in understanding where you addressed the feedback and where you modified the document.

Introduction
Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak” as in cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of a lower socio-economic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

Initial Post Instructions
Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created it and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.
Take your personal ethical philosophy statement and use it to work through John Doe’s case. What is moral and immoral per your theory?
How would the veil of ignorance or a different theory of justice address John Doe’s case?

What were the circumstances surrounding your conversation with the unbelieving person when you presented the gospel? What was the reaction (questions/comments/statements) of the unbeliever?

Witnessing Report Assignment Instructions

Overview

This being a course in personal evangelism, it is only natural that we seek to practice what we study. Ultimately, the only way to learn how to witness is to do it! Therefore, you are required to share your faith with in at least 3 separate encounters with at least 3 different unsaved people during this semester. This is your last encounter. Whenever possible, intentionally seek to reach into your “Jerusalem” where you live, work, and play – make evangelism a daily lifestyle.

Witnessing encounters must be completed within the timeline of this course. No prophetic or posthumous reports will be accepted. For full credit, the witnessing opportunity must be brought to the point of seeking a response. This means that you need to demonstrate intentionality in reference to presenting Christ and offering an opportunity for a response. The listener’s response is not the issue; rather it is our intentional obedience to the Holy Spirit in calling people to follow Christ. Remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit and demonstrate a loving approach.

Instructions

  1. The Witnessing Report should be a true, face-to-face encounter with an unbeliever (a person who is not born again) during the current semester.
  2. Virtual encounters via Face Time, Zoom, or Skype are allowed for the report only with special permission from the professor.
  3. You are not permitted to document a “mock” or “role-played” encounter.
  4. You must share the gospel with an unbeliever. It is not acceptable to simply invite them to church, have a religious discussion, hand them a tract, share your testimony, pray for them, or even serve them, without actually sharing the gospel. Sharing the gospel is the key.
  5. One goal of this encounter is to help you adapt to people of different cultural and philosophical backgrounds in your conversation. Keep this in mind as you are sharing with others and if you were able to make cultural adjustments, make sure that you reflect that in your paper.
  6. If you share your faith with someone and during the conversation you find out that they are already saved, you must find another individual who is not saved to witness to and document for the Witnessing Report.

How to Write the Witnessing Report:

There are three sections to this Witnessing Report:

Part ONE – What were the circumstances surrounding your conversation with the unbelieving person when you presented the gospel?

  • For example, where were you/what were you doing/what was going on when you began your conversation with the unbeliever?
  • How did you begin the gospel conversation?
  • To the best of your knowledge, what is the cultural background of the person you shared with? ex: religious background, cultural perspective, church experience.
  • Were you able to adapt your conversation or presentation of the gospel to the person’s cultural background? If so, how?

Part TWO – What was the reaction (questions/comments/statements) of the unbeliever?

  • For example, was he/she hostile, penitent, curious, confused, etc.? Explain, offer examples, paraphrased quotes, etc…

Part THREE – What did you do/say to the person in light of the person’s reaction to your presentation of the Gospel?

  • For example, if his/her reaction was to accept Christ, what did you say to them – did you pray with them, etc.?
  • If his/her reaction was not to accept Christ at this time, what did you say to them – did you ask if you could pray for them?
  • Did you ask them if it was ok if you could pray for them this week that they will sincerely think about what was said in this conversation?
  • Did you rehearse some important points made during the conversation so that it would “stick” with them after you parted ways? Explain.

Each of the 3 witnessing encounters must be summarized in a 1 – 2-page report using 12-point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced and adhering to the current Turabian format.

IMPORTANT: The Witnessing Report is not graded on the quality of the encounter, your performance, or the individual’s reaction. It is simply graded on whether or not you meet the requirements of the assignment listed above – you must actually share the gospel. The point of this assignment is to create life skills and accountability related to sharing Christ as a natural part of daily life. As Christians, we are all expected to be willing and obedient participants in the Great Commission. As you know from this class, that definitely includes sharing the gospel!
