Disscusion 2

1. Which of the seven faulty listening behaviors do you tend to fall into more often (you could have more than one, and that’s ok!)?

2. Explain why you fall into them and explain what happens to the understanding of the language and communication used (meaning: do you understand the message being sent to you? Have you created conflict in that relationship? Has this ever impacted you at work? If you are not working, especially dual enrolled students, what about a time when you were volunteering, or a time at school in an organization such as ROTC, band, cheer, SGA or a sport, or even class.).

3. Then explain how you can become a better listener.

What sociological question did the researcher ask? Possible sub-questions: Why were they interested in that question? What motivated them to ask this question?

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

For this assignment, you will develop a two-page Rhetorical Analysis of a published article that explores its rhetorical situation. Remember that the rhetorical situation of an article has to do with its purpose, intended audience, and context. In your analysis, you’ll discuss these and other elements. The first step is to find an article that interests you. It is important to choose an article that makes a substantial argument for you to analyze. My suggestion is to visit the websites of journals that specialize in longer persuasive essays such as Slate (Links to an external site.), The American Scholar (Links to an external site.), The Atlantic (Links to an external site.), or The New Yorker (Links to an external site.).

Carefully read the article and assess the author’s overall argument and main points. See the requirements and steps below.

Structure

The Rhetorical Analysis should have three parts: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

Introduction: In the introduction, introduce the article you will be analyzing. Give the name of the article and the author. Also, state where the article was published. Write a three-point thesis statement that clearly states the three points of your analysis (at the end of your Introduction). Your three points should spell out the purpose, intended audience, and context of the article.

Sample Thesis: Jerry Useem’s article, “Power Causes Brain Damage,” argues that unchecked power can damage one’s brain (purpose), harm workers (audience), and create a toxic culture at major American corporations (context). Please see the Sample Thesis Statements at the bottom of this page.

Important: You need at least 3 quotes to support your points in this essay (one in each body paragraph). Quotes should never exceed two (2) typed lines. In addition, make sure that each paragraph is at least 6-7 typed lines.

Body: Divide the main body of the analysis into three paragraphs. Each paragraph should be devoted to the different rhetorical dynamics used in the article. In addition, cite examples from the article as evidence for your analysis in each body paragraph.

Explore the author’s overall purpose or argument in the article. Include at least one quote from the article that is no more than 2 typed lines. (Paragraph 1)
Examine the situational/historical context of the argument. Include at least one quote from the article that is no more than 2 typed lines. (Paragraph 2)
Analyze the intended audience and the author’s tone and methods of persuasion. Include at least one quote from the article that is no more than 2 typed lines. (Paragraph 3)

Conclusion: Write a one-paragraph conclusion that contains a “thesis restatement” and summarizes the central points of your analysis and why they are significant.

Communication through writing

Overview
The ability to communicate a message through writing is essential in any career. Effective writing shapes and informs the opinions of its readers. The writing process can be intimidating; however, the more you work with it, the more comfortable the process becomes.

Prompt
For this project, you will build upon the outline of the essay you have developed while incorporating your instructor’s feedback. Use the prompt questions below to help you develop your draft. You will pull out quotes and paraphrases from your selected reading and write summaries that you will use to support your analysis.

When you are done responding to the prompts below, you will have the first draft of your critical analysis essay. In the following module, you will complete a revision activity to further improve this draft.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

I. Introduction

The introduction of your essay is where readers will learn what your essay is about. Do not give all your information away here. Instead, give readers a sample of what is to come and what you will be supporting with evidence in the body of the essay. Do not forget to review your outline to make sure you briefly cover all of the key points you identified. If your claim and key points have changed since then, it is okay! For your new ideas, seek feedback from your instructor or writing resources available through SNHU.

Provide an overview of the work you have analyzed, briefly describing the main points and your reaction to the author’s claim.
Compose a thesis that you will support with evidence throughout the essay. This statement will give direction to your essay and should be well thought out.

II. Body

The body is your opportunity to support your evaluation of the author’s argument. Ensure that your thoughts and evidence are clear and easy to read and understand.

Be sure to write organized paragraphs that clearly state their main idea and move logically from one to the other.
Your body paragraphs should support your thesis by combining thoughts and ideas with evidence or key points from the selected reading. There is no such thing as a right or wrong evaluation; the key is how well your analysis is supported and the quality of the evidence used.

III. Conclusion

Think of the conclusion paragraph as a review of your analysis. Use this section to restate your evaluation and remind readers of your supporting evidence. Think of this paragraph as your last chance to prove your point.

Briefly summarize the main points that helped form your analysis. This section should consist of a brief review of your main ideas.
Draw conclusions based on your evidence.
Use evidence that you have found to wrap up the essay in a meaningful way that relates to your audience.

Identify two types of staffing models that could apply to your chosen scenario and determine which model would be best suited for efficiency, productivity, and possible future growth.

Staffing Plan for a growing business

You are a former certified education administrator who departed your former position to become the owner of a small, in-home day care consisting of you and a part-time assistant where you care for children from ages 3–10. Over the course of time, your demographic population has increased due to significant business growth that has resulted in many families relocating to your area. With more businesses projected to move to the area and the building of new housing developments, it is projected that this growth could be long term.
You have decided that this is a good opportunity to expand your day care business as you have received many inquiries for childcare. In order to comply with your home state regulations, you will require a larger facility and will need to hire additional staff in order to sustain the larger demand for day care. This staff will consist of five Certified Day Care Professionals, one Registered Nurse Professional, five After-School Assistants, and one Office Support Paraprofessional. You have secured approval for a bank loan and qualify for future loans for future expansion if your current endeavor is successful. Meanwhile, the state in which you operate has requested that you provide a staffing plan before it will issue licensure for your expanded capacity.

Note: You may create and/or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of these assignments.

Requirements
Select one of the scenarios and write a 4–5 page paper in which you:
Identify two types of staffing models that could apply to your chosen scenario and determine which model would be best suited for efficiency, productivity, and possible future growth. Examine the significant effect of each identified staffing model on processes that may be occurring within the organization (e.g., outsourcing, contingent workers, consulting firms, etc.).

Predict the major potential legal issues that you may encounter when establishing equal employment opportunities and diversity within the workplace while still aiming to acquire employees with the needed certifications and credentials.

Next, explain the method of achieving transparency within your staffing model. Justify your response.
Specify three tasks that you need to perform to identify, analyze, and develop job requirements and task statements that you will include in formalized job descriptions. Next, predict the frequency with which you would need to review and adjust these job descriptions as your company progresses. Provide a rationale for your response.

Describe three methods to deal with high employee turnover and the availability of employees with required knowledge, skills, or abilities. Next, describe the primary manner in which the described succession-planning methods would be beneficial to your company. Justify your response.

Discuss the ways in which this progression is changing the landscape of our society as we are increasingly reliant on our devices and what we are offered through our online immersion.

English 102 Prompts

Essay II
Essay I will be approximately 3 pages in length, double spaced and proper MLA formatting with internal citations. Students must demonstrate the ability to quote, paraphrase, summarize, and cite sources correctly. Source material will be the course readings (Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone”, Sherry Turkle’s “The Tethered Self” and Michel Foucault’s piece “Panopticism”) and 4 academic sources of the student’s selection that will analyze the issues within the course readings. Students will choose one of the prompts to attend to in their essay development.

Prompt 1
In Sherry Turkle’s piece “Always-On/Always-On-You: The Tethered Self” she posits that we are immersed in a new form of sociality, a changing communal space that comes from our increasing reliance on our devices. With this comes a new understanding of intimacy and need for validation. In “Generation Like” we see young adults seeking the external validation their constant presence online creates, with little understanding of the implications on their internal sense of self. In this prompt, discuss the ways in which this progression is changing the landscape of our society as we are increasingly reliant on our devices and what we are offered through our online immersion.

Hints: Think about selfies and why they are taken and posted. Think of how one’s online presence is viewed as an extension of their self, and how that has consequences when presented in a public space. Think about how social media sites function in the society and the influence they have. Think about how “numbers” are the new currency for social media “influencers”.
