Separately, explain how conflict theory, structural functionalism, and symbolic interactionism would view/interpret your film/TV show. Thoroughly explain using sociological concepts/terms. Which paradigm do you think is most represented in your film/TV show? Explain.

Sociological theories

Overview
This project will involve applying the three sociological theories (conflict theory, structural functionalism, and symbolic interactionism) to a film or TV show of your choice.

Directions
For this project, you must write a 2-3 page double-spaced analysis of a video. You need to:
• Pick a film or TV Show

• Provide a short summary of your film/TV show (What is the video about? Clarity is important!)

• Separately, explain how conflict theory, structural functionalism, and symbolic interactionism would view/interpret your film/TV show. Thoroughly explain using sociological concepts/terms.

• Which paradigm do you think is most represented in your film/TV show? Explain.

If the government is spending similar per capita, why are Americans spending more private money and yet still achieving poorer results? Is the United States actually spending “too much”, or is it possible that the high outcomes Switzerland achieves really do come with a higher price tag?

United States Healthcare Spending and Outcomes

The United States is spending more money and achieving fewer quality health outcomes than many of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) peer higher-income nations.  The United States has a lower life expectancy, highest rate of suicide, highest burden of chronic disease, double the average rate of obesity, and among the highest rates of hospitalization for preventable illness (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2020). Government spending rates of OECD nations are similar, but U.S. individual out of pocket expenses are greater than most, and U.S. private spending is more than five times the rate of Canada, the second highest private spender. This then begs the question: if the government is spending similar per capita, why are Americans spending more private money and yet still achieving poorer results?

The first consideration is a comparison of cost for goods and/or services. In their economic analysis report, Papanicolas et al. (2018) considered drivers of U.S. healthcare spending compared with other developed nations. Despite broad generalizations among policy makers to the contrary, this report found that the United States is not spending too much on healthcare and too little on social services comparative to peer nations. There was no notable difference in services targeting improvement of social determinants of health across nations in this data analysis review. The United States did demonstrate high levels of administrative spending costs, as well as higher rates of some common surgical procedures (coronary revascularization and joint replacement), and more expensive pharmaceuticals, fees for physician/hospital services, and diagnostic tests.  (Papanicolas et al., 2018). Targeted action to decrease cost of these goods and services could help to rein spending.

The recent enactment of the No Surprises Act, which protects patients from onerous out-of-network billing practices, was a bipartisan effort by legislators to curb health costs (Hall, 2021). While this bill will certainly be a welcome protection for patients, it has the potential to simply shift out-of-pocket costs from the consumer to insurance payers while doing little for the overall balance of spending. Costs will continue to be high until the United States decides if it wants to spearhead a true national health plan, or if it will continue to provide the either/or option of government sponsored plans versus private insurance.

In light of similar rates of government spending, we must also consider the efficiency with which the government money is spent. Government money is defined here as public funding generated via taxation. The United Kingdom (UK), which spends only half as much on healthcare as the United States, funds 79% of of its National Health Service (NHS) through taxation. By comparison, Switzerland funds only 30.5% of healthcare expenditure with tax funds; the bulk is largely via compulsory private insurance (Cooper, 2019). Switzerland spends a combined (government and private funds) 12% of its adjusted GDP, compared to the United States 16.0% and UK 9.8%, and achieves among the highest overall outcomes (Tikkanen and Abrams, 2020). One takeaway one might consider is that private dollars achieve better outcomes than government, and that cost is relative to outcomes. Is the United States actually spending “too much”, or is it possible that the high outcomes Switzerland achieves really do come with a higher price tag?

Develop your own philosophical position on what constitutes appropriate parameters of individual liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and support it with logical arguments and specific examples/scenarios.

American Politics Winter 2022

Section One (write on ONE topic only)
1. Thomas Jefferson warned of an “aristocracy of our monied corporations which bid defiance to the laws of our country.” Considering interest groups and corporate power, discuss whether Jefferson’s concern about excessive corporate power is still relevant. You should also link Jefferson’s statement to the current issue of increasing income/wealth inequality and its impact on our political system. Use specific examples to support your position.

Note: You should review Chapter 7 on REVEL and Reich’s film Inequality for All if you choose this topic.

2. Where to Invade Next contains episodes that show domestic policies in various countries (eight episodes in eight different countries). After watching the film, choose three foreign countries featured in the film and discuss their
programs/policies in detail. Also decide whether you think their programs/policies would be good for the United States if implemented here and the reasons for your opinions. Devote one page of your essay to each country you choose for a total of three pages.

3. Thomas Jefferson famously wrote that we all have an inherent right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Yet, there are different perspectives on both liberty and the pursuit of happiness—specifically, what (if any) limitations should apply. Where do your individual rights end and others’ rights begin? One’s view of what is an acceptable framework for liberty and the pursuit of happiness (and what is not) is likely to be based in part on his/her moral/ethical
positions and political conditioning. Develop your own philosophical position on what constitutes appropriate parameters of individual liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and support it with logical arguments and specific
examples/scenarios.

Alert! This is the most difficult topic on the exam. It is a philosophical topic, not one on history, nor on the current state of the country, nor on any current political/social issue. Therefore, if you choose to write on this topic, be sure that you stay within its narrow philosophical parameters and avoid discussing specific political issues. Focus your essay on the last sentence in the Prompt: “Develop your own philosophical position on what constitutes appropriate parameters of individual liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and support it with logical arguments and specific examples/scenarios.”

Section Two (write on ONE topic only)

1. State and review briefly the three main principles of libertarianism discussed in the Sandel videos. Then, apply these principles to the controversy surrounding Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher who has refused to pay use fees to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for grazing his cattle for over 20 years on federally-owned land because he does not recognize the authority of the federal government in this issue. Should Bundy be forced to pay like 18,000 other
ranchers do for using federally-owned lands to graze their cattle? After detailing what the libertarian position would be on this issue and why, argue for or against it. Be sure to support your position with logical reasoning.

Alert! This is not a simple topic although it may seem like one. All aspects of the case need to be considered in detail.

Note: Do not use sources for this topic.

Base your essay only on libertarian principles presented in the Sandel videos as well as the facts of the case as stated here, not on any other information that you might find in an outside source.

2. There is a court case that potentially involves two elements of the First Amendment: freedom of religion and free political speech. It could also involve civil rights issues included in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Equal Protection clause in the 14th Amendment. The case involves a Christian printer who refused to print gay pride T-shirts because the message of the shirts conflicted with his religious beliefs. The printer declined the printing job for T-shirts promoting a gay pride festival, but offered to contact other local printers to do the work for the same price as he would have charged. The printer has a history of rejecting other orders for shirts promoting sexually explicit material/actions and violence because the messages violate his religious beliefs. Do an analysis of this case by considering possible arguments on both sides, and then reach a conclusion as to whether the United States Supreme Court should rule for or against the printer (and why) and how you think the Court would rule if the case comes before them (and why).

Alert! Do not use sources for this topic: Base your essay only on the facts of the case as stated here, not on any additional facts or assumptions about the case that you might find in an outside source. Do not assume either side’s motives as that would be an assumption, not a fact. Stick to the facts of the case as presented here.

3. There is a court case that potentially involves the Establishment clause, the Free Religious Practice clause, and the Free Speech clause of the 1st Amendment. It involves a coach who was fired for praying on the field. Refer to
https://www.yahoo.com/news/supreme-court-hear-case-high-212718240.html as you decide whether the coach would/should win at the U.S. Supreme Court. You may also refer to other online articles specifically about this case if you wish. Your task is to consider possible arguments on both sides of the case, and then reach a conclusion as to whether the United States Supreme Court should rule for or against the coach (and why) and how you think the Court would rule if the case comes before them (and why).

Alert! Do not use sources other than online articles specifically about this case for this topic. Do not assume either side’s motives as that would be an assumption, not a fact. Stick to the facts of the case.

Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation, to be given to general classroom teachers in a professional development setting, on inclusion and classroom management strategies that can be incorporated into classrooms.

Professional Development: Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom

Special education teachers often provide training and support to general education teachers to promote successful inclusive practices in their classrooms. Understanding expectations, facilitating social skills, and designing and evaluating the effectiveness of positive learning environments helps all students, especially those with disabilities, learn and be productive in school.

Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation, to be given to general classroom teachers in a professional development setting, on inclusion and classroom management strategies that can be incorporated into classrooms. Include a title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes.

The presentation should help the general education teachers build their skills in the following areas:

Identifying realistic expectations for the personal and social behaviors of students with mild to moderate disabilities in a general education inclusive classroom.

Assisting individuals with mild to moderate disabilities to develop their interpersonal skills for educational and other social environments.

Designing learning environments that motivate and encourage active participation in individual and group activities for individuals with and without disabilities.

Organizing, developing, and sustaining learning environments that support positive multicultural experiences.
Using collaborative learning groups and project-based activities to help individuals with and without disabilities practice self-determination and self-advocacy skills.

Are there any skills you developed as a result of the experience? If so, how would you apply them in future experiences or situations? Are there areas of knowledge or particular skills you now need to develop? Is there anything you would do differently in the future?

Applying the Gibbs Reflective Model
It is not sufficient simply to have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this experience it may quickly be forgotten, or its learning potential lost. It is from the feelings and thoughts emerging from this reflection that generalisations or concepts can be generated and it is generalisations that allow new situations to be tackled effectively. (Gibbs 1988) Using this 6 step model should help to identify your strengths, areas for development and actions you can take to enhance your professional skills. Steps 1 – 3 relate to what happened during the experience and steps 4 – 6 focus on how you could improve on the experience and outcome in the future.

Step 1 Description
This should be a brief description of the experience or event to set the scene and give context.

Step 2 Feelings
Consider what you were thinking and how you felt before the experience.
How did you feel during the experience?
How did you feel after the experience?
This is another short descriptive step, rather than being analytical.

Description

Feeling

Evaluation
Analysis
Conclusion

Action Plan

Step 3 Evaluation
Evaluation looks objectively at both positive and negative aspects of the experience.
Describe key elements that went particularly well.
Was there anything that did not go well or did not work?
If appropriate, you can include what others did or did not do well.

Step 4 Analysis
Analysis attempts to explain why the experience was positive or negative and should form the largest section of your reflection. Take into account points made in the previous steps and identify any factors which helped you e.g. previous experiences, carrying out research or consulting with others. Consider your role in the experience and how you contributed to the success of this experience? If things did not go to plan, why do you think this was e.g. lack of preparation or external factors beyond your control? It can be useful to consider other people who were involved in the experience. Did they have similar views or reactions to you? If not, why do you think that was the case?

Step 5 Conclusion
Focus on what you have learned.
Are there any skills you developed as a result of the experience? If so, how would you apply them in future experiences or situations? Are there areas of knowledge or particular skills you now need to develop? Is there anything you would do differently in the future? Try to give specific examples.

Step 6 Action Plan
What specific actions can you now take to build on your knowledge or skills? You could include any training that would benefit you (formal or otherwise), as well as identifying sources of information or support (people or resources).

What is information and data cleansing? Describe common data items that require cleansing. Identify why information cleansing is critical to Ben & Jerry, California Pizza Kitchen, and Noodles & Company business intelligence tool’s success.

Data Cleansing

Answer the three questions below:

1. What is information and data cleansing?

2. Describe common data items that require cleansing.

3. Identify why information cleansing is critical to Ben & Jerry, California Pizza Kitchen, and Noodles & Company business intelligence tool’s success.

Instructions: Read and use the attached Mining the Data Warehouse document on the three companies, research the Internet and use three internet references to address all questions. Use the attached rubric as a guide.

According to the author of “The Problem of Free Speech in an Age of Disinformation,” what solutions to these problems have social media companies implemented and how effective have these efforts been? What obstacles stand in the way of America’s disinformation problems (when compared to European democracies)? What possible government regulations could be? implemented?

Freedom of Speech and Expression

Before beginning this assignment, make certain that you have read Chapter 4 in your text (“Civil Liberties and Public Policy”) and the New York Times Magazine article by Emily Bazelon (October 13, 2020) titled, “The Problem of Free Speech in the Age of Disinformation” (link provided below). Then write a brief report that contains three separate sections that address all the points in each set of questions. Notice the expected word count for each section (exceeding the word count will not negatively affect your grade, but please try to stay within the range).

1. Using the chapter on “Civil Liberties and Public Policy” from your text, summarize the types of free speech and expression that are protected by the First Amendment and indicate what types are not protected (give examples of each). Also, indicate how the Supreme Court has ruled on issues of “Compelled speech” and “commercial speech.” (Approximately 150-200 words)

2. The author of “The Problem of Free Speech in an Age of Disinformation” indicates that distortions of truth and waves of speech from extremists are a threat to democracy in the United States. She notes that some scholars believe that Americans’ way of thinking about free speech may not be the best way. From your reading of this article, how has the United States historically dealt with free speech issues, particularly of speech that is controversial or extreme? How has this approach shown? to be problematic (in the eyes of some) given the changes in the media landscape? Be sure to
describe some examples of specific problems that have arisen. (Approximately 150-200 words)

Choose a subject from the book and write a standard essay arguing a point thesis with as many sources as needed to prove the thesis.

Crime and Punishment

Choose a subject from the book and write a standard essay arguing a point thesis with as many sources as needed to prove the thesis. The sources can be directly from the novel as long as they help prove the well-established thesis, but they also can include outside sources too, but no number has been assigned. However, it should include a complete bibliography and be written in MLA-8.

Write a brief description of each and what she does in the story. Can you get any general ideas about the roles of women in ancient Sumeria from this? Explain, using specific examples from the story.

Female characters in Gilgamesh

Make a list of all of the female characters in Gilgamesh. Write a brief description of each and what she does in the story. Can you get any general ideas about the roles of women in ancient Sumeria from this? Explain, using specific examples from the story.
