Define and/or describe grand, middle range, and micro-range nursing theory. Which theory are you most likely to use in your practice? Explain your reason.

Understanding Nursing Theory

Due:

In this written assignment, you will examine each of the three types of nursing theory-grand, middle range and micro-range.

Step 1 Write a two-page (minimum) paper, not including the title page or the reference page. For all professional papers, you will need a title page, an introduction paragraph, the body with research, a conclusion and a reference page. All format must be in 7th edition APA.

For the body of your paper, address the following objectives and separate using distinct paragraph headers:

  • Define and/or describe grand, middle range, and micro-range nursing theory. For each type of theory, give one theorist and his or her theory as an example.
  • Which theory are you most likely to use in your practice? Explain your reason.
  • Which theory would you like to incorporate more into your practice in the future? Explain your reason.

Step 2 When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor. Click on Assignment 5.1 to submit the assignment.

In your view, what are the most insightful points that McRaven makes? Why do you view these points as especially insightful? Is there anything you would add to the remarks that McRaven makes in relation to these points?

McRaven’s Advice on Living a Good Life and Making the World Better

This discussion assignment relates to Admiral McRaven’s Commencement Speech delivered at the University of Texas. In his speech, McRaven gives ten pieces of advice based on lessons he learned during Navy SEAL training. His hope is that his advice will help us both lead more fulfilling lives and change the world for the better. If you would like to review the speech and/or transcript, here is a link:

https://news.utexas.edu/2014/05/16/mcraven-urges-graduates-to-find-courage-to-change-the-world/

Instructions:

Begin the assignment by reflecting on the speech. What do you think about McRaven’s advice? Though few of us have had Navy SEAL training, McRaven intends to offer us insights from which we can benefit, whether or not we have served in the military. Did you find any part of the speech to be especially striking? What aspects of the speech made the strongest impression?

Part I: Now, having reflected, write a post in which you comment on the speech. Let’s call this post your “original post.” In your original post, address one or more of the following questions:

In your view, what are the most insightful points that McRaven makes? Why do you view these points as especially insightful?

Is there anything you would add to the remarks that McRaven makes in relation to these points?

Do you regard any parts of McRaven’s speech as puzzling, dubious, or false? If so, which parts do you find problematic, and why?

McRaven makes many comments related to the virtue of resilience. In your view, what are some key characteristics that resilient people tend to possess?

Suppose that you were to make integrity and resilience central goals within your own life (indeed, perhaps they are already central aims for you!). What would be the most significant steps you would take in developing such character traits?

Analyze the data provided in the Dashboard and select an area of performance that needs improvement. Include information on why this area was chosen. Develop a nursing plan that includes suggestions on how to improve performance on the selected indicator.

Dashboard Analysis and Nursing Plan

As Dr. Rempher and Ms. Manna discussed this week, data from the NDNQI is used to improve nursing practices and support the strategic outcomes of an organization. This data is also used to create the Dashboard. The Dashboard, then, is used to create an action plan. Correctly interpreting information presented on the Dashboard provides nurses with a better understanding of the goals of the action plan.

To prepare

For this Assignment, use the Dashboard located in this week’s Resources, to interpret the data and frame a nursing plan based on best practices.

Review the Week 5 Assignment Rubric, provided in the Course Information area.

Discuss the pressure points present in the organization that might suggest an intervention would be difficult, as discovered through a diagnostic study. How would you justify beyond the mere opinion that UVA had selected the correct set of interventions?

ORGANIZATIONAL DIAGNOSIS PROJECT

For students interested in applying organizational diagnostic models, methods, and processes to healthcare organizations, this option allows evaluating a case study from the University of Virginia’s academic healthcare system.

At nine pages minimum, this assignment calls for the following:

1. Using any of the diagnostic models discussed in lectures, class readings, or credible and scholarly external source material as a starting point, build a diagnostic model that could serve as a foundational and generalizable framework relevant to a healthcare organization such as the University of Virginia (UVA). The model should address organizational structural components reflective of how complex healthcare organizations operate, such as design, structure, operations and operational performance, culture, talent, leadership, open-systems concepts, and others as you see necessary.

2. Within the context of your model, discuss effective data collection methods you would recommend being used a priori to the interventions that UVA used given the problems they were trying to solve, including a justification for growth (e.g., new service lines).

3. Given UVA’s change intervention, discuss what you see as the a priori diagnostic indicators that would suggest the need for such an intervention, linking the presenting problem(s), your HYPOTHESES for causes, and the organizational indicators that justified taking action. Connect these to the model you created above.

4. Discuss the pressure points present in the organization that might suggest an intervention would be difficult, as discovered through a diagnostic study (hint: think about intergroup relations, boundaries, etc.). 5. The bottom line to this assignment: How would you justify beyond the mere opinion that UVA had selected the correct set of interventions?

Given the case study of the UVA Health System and what they have achieved within a specific timeline with a model designed that improved and demonstrated excellence in aspects of patient care, staff development, leadership development, and performance management in an academic health center.

a. Assuming you were to evaluate the UVA Health System that was ineffective in all aspects of health management development, what should you have done differently to achieve a similar result?

b. What model would you design to solve the UVA Health System’s initial problems?

c. Support your analysis and conclusion with written narratives, using graphics charts and tables to interpret your data analysis.

Note: all papers submitted will be checked for plagiarism and similarity with external source material. Therefore, all sources must be adequately cited

Evaluate and reflect on your personal image of professionalism. Create and discuss changes that can be made by you and other nurses to improve the perception of nursing by the public and patients.

The Power of a Professional Image

The Gallop Poll rates 11 professions annually, based on the public’s perception of the honesty and ethical standards of the profession.  With the exception of 2001 when firefighters were recognized for their fearless and remarkable efforts during and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is important for nurses to be recognized as a nurse in the agency where they practice.

Nurses demonstrate a sense of pride in their profession when they portray a professional image to the public. Patients state that it is important for them to be able to recognize the nurse when they are receiving health care.  Nurses are leaders, it is important that we recognize the image we portray in our clinical practice and reflect on how well our personal image reflects our education and knowledge.

Assignment Objectives

  • Evaluate and reflect on your personal image of professionalism (Course Objectives 4, 5 and Student Learning Objectives 1, 2, 6, 8)
  • Create and discuss changes that can be made by you and other nurses to improve the perception of nursing by the public and patients (Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4 and Student Learning Objectives 1, 3, 6, 8)

Assess how the creation of a healthy work environment promotes nurse satisfaction and retention. Evaluate how corrective action can be used to improve staff performance. Analyze causes for the current nursing shortage and its impact on nurse staffing.

Sustaining a Healthy Work Environment

It is important that all nurse function as leaders in promoting a healthy work environment.  Although managers must be involved in promoting a healthy work environment, morale, productivity, and job satisfaction of the team is a daily task and is shared by all members of the team, not just the leadership.

Nurses make up the majority of the workforce in acute care settings, such as hospitals.  Nurses have the power to influence the development of a culture of safety and support for all staff working in their organization.

Discussion Board Objectives

  1. Assess how the creation of a healthy work environment promotes nurse satisfaction and retention (Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4 and Student Learning Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
  2. Evaluate how corrective action can be used to improve staff performance (Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, 5 and Student Learning Objectives 1, 2, 5, 6, 8)

Choose one hypothetical audience group only. Include a link to the original, and a brief explanation of who your hypothetical audience is and what the context or situation is.

The Essentials of Technical Communication

Before you begin this assignment, make sure you have read and thought about Chapters 1-3 in The Essentials of Technical Communication (see Required Reading for Weeks 1-4) .

Find a passage of approximately 400-500 words from a technical blog post or other online article aimed at specialists in your field. This should be something that would be difficult for a non-specialist to understand. Revise the posting for a specific group of readers outside your field who might need to know this information (e.g., business managers, city officials, school administrators).

Your revision should be entirely in your own words. (Don’t use any kind of article spinning/rewriting/paraphrasing tool.)

Choose one hypothetical audience group only. In a separate paragraph at the beginning of your response, include a link to the original, and a brief (50-word minimum) explanation of who your hypothetical audience is and what the context or situation is. Include the link and the explanation of your audience in both your rough and final drafts.

Keep in mind “the qualities of good technical writing” discussed on page 8.

Your purpose is to explain the concept to a non-technical audience and to explain why they should care.

You are free to format this in any way you think would be most effective to your purpose and audience.

Your rough draft should be 400-500 words long (not including your 50-word-minimum audience description).

Your final draft should be 500-700 words long (not including your 50-word-minimum audience description).

Compare and contrast the information the census and health status data with your Windshield Survey observations. How does this information help to guide your health promotion activities for individuals and families who live in this community?

Health status of the community

This assignment builds on qualitative information obtain through the windshield survey and key informant reports regarding the community. Quantitative data will be obtained including incidence and prevalence rates along with morality and morbidity rates to determine the health status of the community.

Apply mortality and morbidity rates to determine the most common health conditions in a community.

Identify health disparities in a community with corresponding interventions for the three levels of prevention.

Discuss social determinants that contribute to these health disparities

After completing your windshield assessment, use internet resources to learn about the demographic makeup of your community. For this assignment find the following information..

(Note: You may need to use county data or obtain data by zip code.)

1) Population Characteristics: (Census Data) Total population; Population by age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, occupation, socio economic status.

2)Health status (morbidity & mortality data): pregnancy outcomes; by age, gender, race; noted health disparities

3)What are the leading causes of illness and death in your community?

4) List three health problems in this community that should be of concern to the nurse

Describe at least one primary prevention interventions for each health problem

Describe at least one secondary prevention intervention for each health problem

Describe at least one tertiary prevention intervention for each health problem

5) Compare and contrast the information the census and health status data with your Windshield Survey observations (quantitative data)

How does this information help to guide your health promotion activities for individuals and families who live in this community?

According to the Drug Policy Alliance, a non-profit organization, the Oregon victory demonstrates that decriminalization is politically viable. Do you believe that other states will soon follow Oregon’s lead? Outline the arguments that were made by both the proponents and opponents of Measure 110.

Oregon Voters Approve Ballot Measure That Decriminalizes Hard Drugs

On Election Day, Oregon made history by being the first state in the nation to decriminalize the possession of hard drugs. The ballot measure, Measure 110, decriminalizes the possession of small amounts of drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, oxycodone, methamphetamine, and others. According to OPB (Links to an external site.), the measure, which was approved by 58.46% (Links to an external site.)of Oregonians, reclassifies the possession of small amounts of drugs as a civil violation. This reclassification is similar to a traffic violation and would result in a $100 fine or participation in a health assessment. In addition to the reclassification, the Drug Policy Alliance (Links to an external site.), a non-profit organization, reported that Measure 110 will use excess marijuana tax revenue (estimated to be over $45 million and projected to be up to $129 million by 2027) and savings from the reduction in arrests, incarcerations, and prosecutions to expand the access to drug treatment, peer support, housing, and harm reductions services. Proponents (Links to an external site.) of the measure highlighted the prevalence of drug use and drug-related deaths in the state and argued that the new approach would save lives, save families, reduce convictions and arrests, and lead to a 95% (Links to an external site.) reduction in racial disparities in drug arrests. Opponents, on the other hand, argued that the measure was “reckless” and that its passage would lead to increases in the “acceptability” of the hard drugs. The measure, which does not apply retroactively (Links to an external site.) to past convictions, takes effect (Links to an external site.) 30-days after the election, but the provisions pertaining to decriminalization of the hard drugs will not take effect until February 1, 2020.

While Oregon was the first state in the nation to decriminalize hard drugs, it was not the only state that made headlines for working towards the decriminalization of drug use on election night. Voters in Arizona, Montana, New Jersey, and South Dakota approved the legalization of recreational marijuana and Mississippi voters approved the legalization of marijuana for medical use. While federal law prohibits marijuana use, the Washington Post (Links to an external site.) reported that about one-third of states have now passed measures that “ease the criminal consequences” associated with its use. Oregon also passed (Links to an external site.) Measure 109, which legalized and approved the use of psilocybin, also referred to as magic mushrooms, for mental health treatment at licensed facilities. And, Washington, D.C. voters approved (Links to an external site.) the decriminalization of psychedelic substances, which would not legalize the substances, but make them a “lower enforcement priority” for police officers. However, the initiative needs to be approved by the D.C Council and then sent to Congress for review.
